I am sure this topic has been brought up countless times before, and some people have had success in some shape or form with building a “melee” engineer – but hear me out!

I love what the TANKCAT build brings to the table. It successfully puts you in melee range without you getting burned down in a matter of seconds. What I DON’T like, is that the only way to actually “melee” is the toolkit. The potential for the engineer to be a really well balanced class would be to simply add a melee weapon to their arsenal.

It of course couldn’t be a sword/greatsword or anything like that – but I could certainly see either a dagger, mace, or hammer. There is absolutely no reason that an ENGINEER, that BUILDS and FIXES things wouldn’t be able to use a hammer, or a mace. And really, who can’t use a dagger? It seems to fit the ‘tinkerer’ archetype that ANet is trying to produce with the engineer to begin with.

None of these choices would make the engineer overpowered, and it might even draw more people away from cookie cutter grenade spam builds, which are NOT very fun (in my personal opinion.)

Adding these weapons would allow engineer to stay within melee range at all times if that is how the player wanted to build their character, which makes sense as we are the only non-heavy armored class that has access to a shield. To me it seems like a no-brainer to give us the choice to stay in melee range.

The dagger would be focused around quick, light strikes to inflict some bleeds, coupled with the shield offhand to help keep us up. The mace would be light control and just overall melee, again coupled with the shield. The hammer would be our only true all out offensive melee build, built with power/control in mind just like warriors and guardians utilize them.

I do realize that we have countless weapon kits and abilities to help accentuate our current very limited melee capabilities, but realistically adding one or more of these additional melee options doesn’t seem very far fetched to me.

Feel free to weigh in, as I’d like to see everybody’s stance on this.

@ArenaNet – are there future plans to add additional weapons to each class for more options on how to play?

Disagree. Toolkit Thwack is the equivalent of mace attack and is perfectly viable in melee range when you take the in Inventions.

A hammer would be interesting but wouldn’t offer up anything we can’t already do with any other kit, it would just maybe be aesthetically pleasing to some of you. I wouldn’t mind seeing it, but it’s nowhere near the top of my wish list with anything in this game, more towards the bottom if at all.

I am sure this topic has been brought up countless times before,

If you know this, then why are you do bumping this thread?

Bumping this – again please feel free to weigh in as to whether or not you agree engineers should have more melee capabilities.

Knowing there are a million threads on this, why did you start a new one? Add to one of the old ones.

Yes, as I have posted on other forums, my main wish for engineers at this point is to be able to use the hammer. I feel like it would add a lot to the class for me, and many other people. I don’t think it would subtract from the game at all for engineers or any other class. I love tool kit, but I would also love a melee weapon that gives a little less utility, and a little more “Umph”.

Please Jon?
