Miss! Miss! Miss!
It is very annoying… The target is simply within melee range and the flamethrower is missing consistently which is very annoying when this weapon is VERY cool… but the overall DPS just :/
can you possibly provide some videos of your missing issues, and describe in more detail when it happens?
i use the FT exclusively and i do not have issues missing. i would like to see what it is that people are talking about.

It takes work to get reliable hit rates out of the FT, but it can be done.
This has been covered a several times here lately. Suggest you do a forum search for one of the recent threads about this.
Not sure what you’re talking about. I use FT all the time and notice it only misses when the target is right on top of me (next to me or behind me) and a simple side strafe fixes that. However, I also noticed that the FT also hits more in front of me than what is shown as it’s cone of fire, and sometimes just standing next to a target while shooting forward away from it will still hit it.
nakoda, I and others like the OP reported this just after launch last year, they have yet to fix it, they claimed falsely that they fixed it in the patch notes for feb 2013. It’s still occurring. They have shown me that they really just don’t give a rats butt about engineers in this game so many of us left.
I returned to the forums tonight to find out how last month’s patch was received. I can see that my predictions were well founded. At this rate they might maybe improve this class to the state it should be in it’s first expansion (altho i highly doubt it)

actually, three patches ago they fixed the hit detection on rectangular aoe, which included the ft, and last patch they finally fixed the stationary objects bug. there are many threads discussing this. try a search.
the only remaining problem is going up and down slopes when you have auto aim disabled (fires straight into the hill).
you’ve said the exact same thing in three posts now, and, soz, but you are wrong.

I wonder if Flamethrower 1 flubbing consistently has anything to do with how sometimes I will be turning quickly into an enemy (perhaps having come out of a dodge roll or just after having done an about face) and use Blunderbuss (Rifle 3) only to find it misfire on me. Instead of Blunderbuss actually going off, all I will see are the particle effects (akin to a typical “charging my laser” visual trope—if you will—that shows air or light being sucked into a weapon before it goes off) that appear in the brief 1/2 second before it goes [BOOM] and damages foes in its range. All I see is my Engineer charging up his Blunderbuss except that nothing happens afterwards. The only thing that happens is that I get stuck in the Blunderbuss firing animation for 2 seconds while the skill itself goes into a three or so second recharge.
This same issue occurs with Overcharged Shot as well.
However, more to the point of this thread, I still push for Flame Jet to function like the Elementalist’s Drake’s Breath or Cone of Cold. Flame Jet seems to pursue a target. Elementalist cone attacks, while they still allow you to select and “lock-on” to a target, do not attempt to track that target at all. It is entirely in the Elementalist’s hands where a Drake’s Breath or Cone of Cold hits.
Truth be told, de-targeting right before using Flame Jet often results in a much more reliable skill and better experience for me. However, using such a tactic all the time is really clunky and you would really only get away with that in PvE where your opponents are pretty numb-skulled.
To get to the point: Flame Jet should just be a non-tracking cone-based attack like Drake’s Breath or Cone of Cold. It would fix everything.
Ughh I love rifle but it has proven to be consistently bad, getting stuck when using blunderbuss kills me. Literally.
And yeah the ft needs just a little more tweaking.
reroll thief!
Heartseeker always steers towards your target even if you look into the opposite direction.
Honestly what op said is one of te few things that makes FT somewhat good even though the dmg output is so low compared to everyone else it doesnt really mater
overall fail thread

no actually as usual there was a claim that they fixed this and when that patch was discussed at length many of us posted the truth that it was disappointing because it was still happening.
when it’s still happening it’s not fixed.
Flamethrower (and fumigate) works reliably once you figure out how to aim.
That being said, it shouldn’t take jumping through hoops and playing/aiming in a very specific way for an ability to work reliably.
Also: Flameblast is bugged in multiple ways currently still. Sometimes it gets ‘stuck’ and undetonatable. It also likes to do this by going into the ground and other objects.
For the toast!

could you please show me the discussions where we all decided that it was broken? I must have been absent for those in my 100% attendance in the last 3 months.
and i do not have miss issues, and it does not happen to me. neither to moving targets, or stationary targets. I hit everything.

I have been seriously annoyed by this too, but I still love the ft for many reasons so have been using it since launch. I agree with others that said aiming can be tricky and that there’s maybe a bit of a learning curve (as opposed to the rifle, which always seems to hit any in-range target). I’ve certainly improved my accuracy with it over the months. However, I do think it seems broken in addition to being tricky to learn. There have been countless times when a mob is standing directly in the big jet of flame, just a few feet in front of me, and all i’m seeing is “miss! miss! miss!” even when neither i nor my target is moving. Some small adjustment in my position will change that, sure, but in those situations it’s ridiculous that I should have to make such an adjustment. It’s just not realistic. If i were holding a flamethrower in real life and several feet of flame were spitting out the front, anyone standing in that jet is gonna get burned. There’d be no missing. It makes sense to me that such a kit would be a little tricky to wield, but it shouldnt be this bad.
