I also find it funny that we can throw a whole hand full of grenades almost as far as the mortar can shoot. We must all have very strong throwing arms (or very weak mortars).
Honestly the range is the lamest thing for the mortar. In my experience there is just never a time where it is useful. I guess if drop it and let a level 1 in wvw use it, that is handy.
The range is the only bad thing about the Mortar IMO. I find myself using the mortar in WvW often, and each skill is useful and has a place. I just find myself wishing for RANGE. It’s a MORTAR. They are supposed to lob things over walls, as it stands, I can’t even lob a shell ONTO a wall.

Mortal is definitely useful in WvW, the main issue with it is it dies instantly if it happens to be damaged.
I like the mortar for my elite since I run a flamethrower build. It allows me to be effective in siege situations somewhat, however I just feel it dies too fast.

My mortars made of paper and fires water balloons, not to mention the range on the kitten thing.
It’s so useless, the only real upside to it is that you can lob water balloons over walls, which has allowed me to cheese some pve bosses without getting touched.
Biggest problem IMO is that the mortar doesn’t see a range increase with any of the traits. I keep testing it out after each patch but to no avail.
Playing engineer mostly just for WVW, i have to agree, the mortar begs for better range.
1. Needs better range and los
2. Way too easy to destroy a mortar by spamming meteor shower (elem) or barrage (ranger), because we have to set our mortar near the edge of a wall, to get better range. Kinda sad if you think about it, it’s a elite skill and we can’t (most of the time) use it for more than 10 seconds. 10 sec for a 2 min cooldown, is not worth it, especially when you can throw nades at the same range of a mortar and you have mobility.
So now i never use the mortar.
Yeah range buff would be greats and I wish it would be more like the mortar that are use to kill shatter. But I still find uses for it.

Grenades make it relatively obsolete. They are mobile, have a relatively comparable range, and they don’t have a 2min cooldown. Seriously, I would use the mortar in WvW all the time if it had good range or did more damage to justify that cooldown.
Also, not being able to hit things out of your line of sight with a mortar is total BS. That is why they arc so much, so you can hit things that are behind other things and far away.

The mortar is the onside kick of elite skills; it briefs well but rarely delivers.
