I know this might seem silly but has anyone had any success in using the mortar elite in WvW. I was thinking that during defense of keeps / towers that this might be viable to destroy enemy siege. All I’ve been able to find was very old videos (like 2012) of it’s use and nothing current.

I’m sure it’s not awful…

But uh… The skill’s pretty bad. And it doesn’t have THAT much range.

Kinda curious how it works with Synaptic Overload with that one skill it has with the concussion bomblets.

They really should increase the range of the mortar, I mean we can throw nades 100 units further then the mortar can shoot. I would suggest a 2500 range for the mortar, as you are not able to move while using it and a enemy can get close fast enough.

There’s a few posts on the mortar being useless in every possible scenario and people have been asking for a buff on the skill for ages. I’ve just sorta accepted it to be a useless fluff-skill, so I only use it while soloing, and even then I get tired of it very quickly, no matter how much I want to love it.

I"m at work so I can’t test this myself, but what is the range on the Mortar? If in PVP could you launch from one capture point to another? You would be giving up supply crate, but could help pressure another node if you are holding a point.

1400.

That is a little more than normal grenades but a little LESS when traited for grenadier.

So in short, not even CLOSE.

when you are traited with Elite Supplies trait your mortar skills will have 1500 range, which is the same range as the grenades. The explosion radius of the mortar skill 1 is 180, the auto attack of the grenade kit is 120, shrapnel nade is 150 and freeze nade is 240. This means that the mortar is actually able to damage people further with auto attacks. freeze nade can damage further then auto attacks of the mortar. Although the concussion barrage (skill 5 of the mortar) has a radius of 360.

Conclusion: Mortar is able to damage people from a further distance, but the difference is soo little that the mortar is a waste for those situations.

Both the mortar and nades don’t have enough range to put some pressure on capture points in PVP from another capture point. It could be cool though in some situations, mortar on top of the building in the middle on temple of the silent storm, with the ability to shoot on the Gate capture point and the stillness buff. I have 0 experience with the mortar skills if they are even worth taking over supply kit.

It would be nice if they increased the velocity of the mortar shots, considering that you most of the time have to predict where the enemy is moving. Additionally, increase the range to 2k – 2.5k, so it will at least see some use in WvW during siege scenarios.

It used to be used for stability, see an incoming knockdown press F for quick stability. That being said it is an awful elite most of the skills have no scaling, meaning they will often hit for less than a single bleed tick, while taking a long time to use any of the skills and it having a minimum range…tldr awful don’t waste you elite slot keep supply crate.

If they gave it another 1100 range, upped the damage and increased the AoE radius it would be a pretty cool skill.

It’s also got one of the only/longest Ice Fields as well, which could see some interesting play if the elite wasn’t terribad otherwise.

…But, yeah, in it’s current state, Grenades are far better.

This ^.

Personally I’d love to see them scrap the mortar for an elite mini gun.
Similar to the flame thrower in how it works, (with flamethrower traits effecting it) but with greater range & a better balance between condi & power.

Idea being it would be powerful while you have it but it would only last a set amount of time (so that it doesn’t become a full time kit)

What annoys me the most, is that the last time I tried to use it, it wouldn’t even let me drop the healing mortar on myself. Because it also has a minimum range.

Mortar is a racial elite that accidentally made it into the Engineer skill set. I’d ask to swap it with the charzooka but Charr players would argue it would be a nerf to Charrs. And I’d have to agree with them.

Its a “fun” skill. But the fun quickly disappears when you find it unable to even kill basic mobs in the approximate ballpark of your level before they force you off the Mortar because of its deadzone.
The skills have terrible scaling, for example they cant even crit. So all stats and traits that in any way involve critical hits are useless. Goodluck hitting anything anyway with that slow projectile. And I hope you didn’t plan on using it anywhere around tree’s or a cave, because the projectile gets caught in the overhanging branches or the cave ceiling.
Best use i’ve found for it is on guild missions when you are to get a target that does a lot of CCs. Sit on your Mortar and plink away at his health from a reasonably safe distance, until it gets destroyed because it’s made of paper.

In short;
Its terrible. It’s not even very fun because of its wonky workings.

Ive always thought its strange that we have two turret based elites and no kit. honestly I’d rather just have an extra utility slot than use any of our elites, to bad that’s not an option.

Mortar needs some major buffing. First of all why is it not considered a turrets for traits?
Supply crate’s turrets are affected by traits as is the elixir X by proper elixir traits.

2nd of all what is it with it’s paper defenses? Just one look at that thing (along with stability) screams that it’s one heavy, sturdy piece of hardware. So why it breaks apart so easily? Especially given it’s stationary and cannot be picked up or detonated like a turet for last second advantage before it’s busted to pieces.

What’s with the kittenty range? It’s a MORTAR kitten. It’s my own elite tool for some LONG range death from above for my party. It’s range should be on par with environmental siege weapons. Also the projectiles should move faster. This is not “for fun targeting practice” on renowned heart, it’s an elite. A skill to turn the tide of battle. And here’s the important part for those of a-net devs that missed it:

in my favour, not the enemy’s!

Ps. Yeah that 10 sec ice field is great:) As long as i still have range and a mortar to use..

wiki says it does:

Using the trait Elite Supplies or Potent Elixirs increases Tornado and Whirlpool duration to 18 seconds, and increases Rampage and Plague duration to 25 seconds. Using Elite Supplies and Potent Elixirs in conjunction does not increase the time further.

This skill’s recharge time is affected by Fast Acting Elixirs.

What it should do is form a bunker like a large reflect or deflect barrier perhaps with added mines to support

I really think this would make it a nice defensive alternative to the doom box since engineer doesn’t actually have a true defensive elite skill perhaps spawning more than just one too.

Cajun I’ve tried doing just this, and I had bad results. In my desperation to put something other than the crate in that slot I’ve tried the mortar all over with little to no success. It is god-awful and should have been scrapped in beta.

If you’re lucky you can land a few shots on the mob in WvW, but once the enemy spots you, you are as good as dead. Yes the mortar provides stability but otherwise you are defenseless: a sitting duck with no reflect or damage reduction. Rangers, etc. will target you and your health will be melted.

For the love of all that’s holy, Anet please start over with Mortar and Elixer X.

I have a sword, a dagger, and an estimated life span of 2.47 seconds.
