Mortar/Grenade Engineer for WvWvW
Yep it is, but not for all the reason you said.
Grenade kit, when traited, can hit at 1500 range. So it’s really useful during siege. Beware tho, their direct damage got nerfed quit a bit, and hitting moving target can be painful. You can use ewther power or condition damage with grenade, as they are effective with both.
FlameThrower is only really decent in WvW if you traits for it and might stacking (the buff). You also have to be using life stealing food to be descent. You won’t be effective in 1 on 1, but in group fight you should do a good job. And you can shoot tru door.
Supporting is OK, but not the best around. Since the nerf/bug fix to super elixir, our heal went down a bit. But I didn’t play support much, so can’t say much more.
Mines might be a dispappointment. I rarely see people use them. Their damage is rather low for a static item. The mine utility do low damage and can be weird to land, while the toolbelt mines have a long casting time, do low damage, are spread out and you have to WALK on them to make them explose. Usually people just ignore them and walk tru.

You can’t move anymore, you can’t hit melee, you have 1200 range untraited and you have low damage.
The mortar is a weaker, static version of grenade. The only thing you get is stability when using it.
2-3 hit from someone and it’s gone, destroyed.
It’s also a bit buggy, when you queue up utility sometime it’s just going to stop shotting for a bit. Not sure how it works, sometime it shoot right away, sometime it delays for 2-3 second.
Mortar is sadly our worse Elite right now.
But overall, Engineer is a really good class for WvW. We don’t have unique abilities like Elem Swirling wind, Mesmer Portal or other thing.
Nearly forgot, we also have toolkit pull. We can pull people from 1200 range. Really useful again zerg.
By the way, if you like to AoE dps from afar, don’t forget necromancer. Necromancer ranged DPS is among the best. Especially with epidemic.

I forgot to mention the necromancer in my OP, that is true. However, I do not like their style of AoE. When I click that skill button, I want to see the pain happening. I don’t want to have to wait until someone happens to step on a mark. It’s the exact same reason why I am not all that fond of traps on my ranger (despite them being the only decent utilities that class has).
The mortar as awesome as it sounds is completely worthless until the give it A LOT more range or damage/utility, let’s hope they do it eventually, I’m kinda bored of only having one elite (Elixir X is a lazy joke, in both effectiveness and the concept itself).
grenades will get the controller off the of the siege, but it will by no means destroy siege quickly.
Mortars are really nothing but a disappointment due to its less than stellar range copped with medium damage.
