if he had just targeted and auto attacked with the rifle he would have stopped the cap.
Slow projectile speed, high arc and super sluggish precast makes it far from useful to auto on it unless you are running zerg vs zerg.

I am running zerg vs zerg, blob vs blob, w/e. Is there a more effective AOE spec for engis? Are grenadiers still effective? Or should I stick to mortars for the range and continue spamming it into their zerg and hope for the best?

I agree, the velocity of it absolutely needs to be increased.
Is it better to just run grenades with a power build now? I haven’t played my engi since my return to the game after a lengthy break and the June 23rd patch seems to still have most engineers confuzzled as to what’s “meta.” If anyone has more experience than I with mortars vs grenades, let me know your thoughts! I’m sure mortars would still be taken for the fields they provide, range and orbital strike but should I take grenade kit and main it as my main damage source? Discuss… I will test the damage difference out tonight

nah man, mortar from 1.5k range is faster than getting to 1.2k range and AA + I was crippled and blinded

It seems to me that grenades are prone to spread rather now than cluster as they did prepatch. If your aim is good but the rng of the nade pattern causes only 1 to connect there is a huge dmg loss. it is for this reason my build uses FT and MK.
super secret FT tech! FT has great burst if you can double hit with flame blast, we’re talking 2.5k and 5.5k average crits. Grenade Barrage will get you about 9k but thats if they all hit and its on a 21s CD with traits. Flame blast is a 6s CD and has a bit of auto tracking magic.
The double hit works like this… as the projectile nears the target, it has to be manually detonated but if your timing is perfect, it hits with the undetonated dmg and then detonated dmg.
the best rotation is to throw wrench and immediately launch the flame blast, both attacks can hit the target at the same time for quad hits.
I find that MK compliments FT very well, especially with the on demand blast finisher you are now carrying.

anyone else feel they dont give engis enough screen time on tournies?
Synosius: Not sure where you got roaming from my mention of grenades lol. As I mentioned in my original post, I zerg v zerg 95% of the time, so I ask again, would mid range traited grenadier be more viable than MK? With the better velocity and losing virtually no grenades because no matter the spread they’re bound to hit someone in the blob if aimed correctly, whereas you could miss your mortar entirely by the time it reaches it’s destination, if the battle position shifts. And you’re left with a field that no dumby would intentionally run through.

to directly answer your question, MK is better than GN if you back it up with FT.
reason being; the dmg from mk and gn is about the same on average. your substituting the burst dmg of barrage with flame blast. we should all still be pretty good at connecting slow projectiles from years of pre patch experience.
are you just going for tag and bag hits or do you actually want to contribute to downing targets? 1/3 nade hits is just fluff dmg. retal can still be a problem which doesnt effect mortar as much. MK can still be used to desiege almost as effectively as pre patch grenades.
there is rly nothing engi has that can be main dmg like meteor shower or power wells but mortar is great filler between coordinated bursts to maintain pressure.

Mortar projectile velocity needs to be increased. Trying to hit any solo moving target is same as lottery. Swiftness + running is nearly as fast as mortar projectile.
Perhaps the Siege Rounds GM trait could also increase the mortar velocity by 50%.

This would be amazing, they already nerfed the damage on MK, at least let them travel faster than a fat norn at a walking pace…
