Q:
Must We Use Bundles?
You don’t HAVE to use kits, however kits add a lot to your overall effectiveness. Kits add a lot of versatility, and interesting ability interactions.
Most DPS builds use Rifle, its probably the better choice since P/P bleeds got nerfed. I see this build floating around which is pretty high dps. It does use the Tool kit, but its the only kit it uses.
EDIT: my link wasn’t working so I added the youtube link to the guide.
It combines strong tool belt skills with solid damage abilities, you could try something like this out if it floats your boat. Hope that helps.

You absolutely do NOT need to use bundles, infact turret builds don’t touch the things, and i’ve seen a few builds where the person goes either pistol/pistol or rifle with gadgets/elixirs (seen them use a turret or two before too but not as common), however if you go that route i THINK (never tried the build myself so don’t quote me on this!!) have to go 30 points in firearms, however you can probably figure out a way to do it differently!!

I agree with what they said. Long story short, there are great build with and without kits. It is all up to what works for you. There is a way to play this class with almost any combination of utilities you may like.
Was in WvW using pistol/shield con dmg build.
Shooting enemies off here and there without even moving.
Ranger enemy: comes spamming arrows and dodging here and there.
>me puts shield up, reflects the initial burst of skill spam making him 1/2 hp
>starts auto-attacking with pistol, stacking up 6-8 bleeds (130 per tick).
>Ranger dies, I did not even move an inch, 3/4 hp remaining.
Thief enemy: charging towards me like a mad man.
>Starts auto attacking till he is near, puts up magnetic shield and knocks him back.
>Continues with poison dart and auto attack.
>He goes stealth, I wait.
>Stabs me to 1/2 hp and i put a shield up to reduce further dmg.
>Bled him to 1/8 hp by then, and finished him off.
>Didnt move an inch.
Pretty much the same for the rest of the classes, maybe hav to run back and forth to avoid zergs in WvW.
Even did well against a mesmer + ranger 2v1 there.
