Key points:

Flamethrower should be about condition damage, not direct damage – Why am I spreading damage instead of flames?

Who the hell spreads Napalm in a straight line? – Napalm should be a circle.

Flamethrower should be about point defense – One skill does this okay. The other is half decent. The rest are not point defense skills.

Flame Jet – Deal damage and cause burning with each pulse.

Flame Blast – Fire a napalm ball that rolls through foes, burning them, and explodes, pushing foes them back.

Push Back 600

Air Blast – Push back all nearby foes.

Napalm Create a ring of napalm that burns foes.

Changing FT to do more burning than direct damage would destroy our dps in groups, events and pvp where other players are constantly applying burning to the enemies.

I’d replace Napalm with a target-able aoe puddle of fuel you can set down. Call it Fuel Spill. It could use the glue bomb animation.
1. You can then ignite the puddle with Flame Jet or Flame Blast creating a fire field similar to warrior bow burst skill.
2. Or use Air Blast to knockback enemies further than normal, if enemies are on the puddle.
3. Or use Smoke Vent on the puddle to create a noxious gas cloud (poison field).

All I would really change is airblast from a pushback to a knockdown. Its annoying pushing someone away then running to get closer and hit them with the stream.

The kit is really not about damage here. It’s about the knockdowns and knock backs. Aka, holding a point.

The flamethrower has one knockback and no knockdowns as of yet, though. And three damage-dealing skills. And blind, which some can consider a soft-CC.

I mean, it’s a pretty good control option to have to knock people back (better than PBR?), and yeah it’s great for point control, but logically (based on where the traits are located) it seems that Anet intended for it to be a damage weapon that you should be able to specialize in. It’s also more intuitive to consider it as such. The numbers just suck very very hard.

I think Anet should make it be the “main” close-range damage kit, though. I can’t count the amount of engineers that are attracted to being a pyromaniac vanguard of destruction – burning through people. But they find out that it’s better at control. Then switch to grenades or another profession.
