I’ve got an immortal bombs build for solo WvW. Imagine it works the same in pvp as a bunker, and in WvW zergs, as frontline support. Build in my sig.

Bomb/nade both, or one at a time?

If you want to go both, you’ll probably want 30/x/x/20+/10+. I run some builds with that base and usually like elixir gun as my third utility, although ostricheggs likes elixir R as his third.

You’ll probably want rabid amulet for pvp, or dire/rabid for wvw. Builds like this can be quite good but are pretty tough to play. Good luck, and let me know if you run into trouble!

last utility slot can be elixir gun, elixir s, rocket boots, or whatever you want. runes can be swapped for nightmare, adventurer, or again whatever fits your playstyle. i find taking out 10 in firearms and putting it into alchemy for protection injection helps a lot against dumb warriors. if you run nightmare maybe consider smoldering to reach 50% burn duration.

In a completely perfect World, I would play bomb, grenades and toolbelt and use the healing kit as my heal skill all at the same time as they are so much more fun. But I think that would be a build meatball sundae.

In general, I like range and CC. I just got lured by the thought of having so bloody many pet options on the ranger. Dad always told me I should get out of the woods and go to school to be an engineer. Finally, I understand!

You can definitely use 3-4 kits. You might consider elixir gun, since it has a stunbreak and a condition removal skill (super elixir removes a condition even though the tooltip doesn’t say so).

II-VII-XII in explosives (do you want the recharge or extra damage)?
VI seems necessary from Tools for easy WvW.
Then it seems I can go firearms or alchemy. There are sooooo many interesting traits (as opposed to being a ranger). Guessing that backpack regenerator is going to be important.

As for the elite, guessing supply is the obvious.

You do not really need traits for the EG in my opinion. In my case I mainly just use it for stun break, occasional condition removal+heal tic, and acid bomb most of the time. Occasionally i will use fumigate or tranq. dart for the debuff.

For bombs/nades/elixir gun, I would do:

Dire/rabid mixed gear, maybe some apothecary

Traits:
Explosives 3, 5, 11 (bomb radius, burn on crit, grenadier)
Alchemy 1, 6, 9 (vigor, protection, regen)
Tools 6 (speedy kits)

You could trade around some explosives traits, but in general, IP will give you way more damage than shrapnel in WvW situations. Bomb radius is nice but you could also trade it for bomb/nade recharge or might on heal (which is especially nice with noble runes).

Alchemy is just an awesome traitline. You literally can’t go wrong there. You could go firearms, but in general you’ll get more dps out of might/boon duration than you will out of precision/condition damage from the traitlines. There are some nice inventions traits as well, so you could trade a few points around. It’s just hard to beat vigor, swiftness, protection, and regen. All four effects are incredibly powerful in PvP/WvW.

It works very well in zerg, small group and 1v1 situations.

How does this build work? Might stacking. in combat you gain 9 stacks of might every time you switch to medkit every 10 seconds. Super easy to maintain 18-21 stacks of might without the annoyances of HGH. If you are running 20+ stacks of might and do a grenade barrage while under fury folks are often taken totally by surprise by how much damage you dish out. In those situations you will be hitting for 600-750 with your pistol autoattack, not even counting the condition pressure you are putting out.

Why celestial? 88% the damage of zerkers with a lot more survivability. Hybrid build provides decent condition and power based pressure so its pretty versatile.

Zerg play: run around tossing grenades. Keep elixir S and rocket boots up for whenever you make a dumb mistake and get out of position. Rake in loot bags.

Small group: Stay in pistol until you or someone else locks someone down and then release hell with grenades.

1v1: If you are god with grenades go for it, if not you will be using p/shield most of the fight until you get in close for a grenade barrage. Only classes that will give you trouble are annoying sustain/stun warriors and p/d thieves, but both of those are easy to just run away from. Edit: and dire necros.

Why this build sucks: Better players could probably ditch Elixir S and find a better utility for this slot, I admittedly use it as a crutch. This build doesn’t have that great condition removal (but the backpack regenerator and rocket boots to remove slows and immobilizes helps). The last 10 points in alchemy (and 5 points in tools) could probably be put into something more useful but I am not smart enough to figure out what! I’m open to suggestions from the engineer gods.
