Need help learning and lvling
The wonderful thing about the Engineer is that if you can make it work, it’s viable.
Maybe I can help. I have engie as a main, with alt char of warrior (which used to be good only for PvE but unexpectedly got some love) and a necro (D/D Power build, so I’m not really whining as much as the next necro). Also has a mesmer, and currenly leveling a guardian, but that’s not the point.
So, to start off, welcome to being an engineer, thematically designed as some sort of clunky mad scientists who rely on RNG Elixirs and hope the much needed boon/effect will pop out. You can look through all the builds that we have here and tweak accordingly.
There’s the grenadier, who stays back in WvW spamming 1 button and causing much discomfort after prolonged playing.
There’s rifle builds that play on the… shotgun-like mechanics unlike warrior rifle. Useful in making hard jumps in PvE and surprising melee enemies in other modes.
There’s the growing flamethrower build. You might want to look at the forums for this one. Good for leveling IMO because of it’s AOE, but has camera angle bugs causing it to miss 90% of the time.
Turrets act as mini – and slightly ineffective – shields from low level aggro, but some of them can be used for competitive play after some practice.
Gadgets? Not so much. We’re proud to be the only class that can fly, though.
So yeah, the theme is fun. Just play around with things after browsing through the forums and you’ll find what works for you. Cheers.

Yeah I’m sad there is no build to make an all gadgets thing viable. I have been playing around with it, but always end up carrying a kit or two to synergize with the one/two gadgets that I have on my bar. Perhaps in the future though.
Welcome to our ranks, we’re awesome and fun both thematically and mechanically (pun intended). I fell in love with our class right off the bat, admittedly was sceptically when Anet first released but I retract it all.
Discovering one’s purpose is not as easy as it might originally appear.

I don’t recall hearing anything about the FT miss issue recently. I was under the impression it was largely fixed. Even more so if you don’t use automatic targeting and use your mouse to aim.

They fixed that? I’m still getting the iconic “miss miss miss miss miss” taunting messages (in candidate trials I switched to FT since my pride as an engie won’t let me pick the other flamethrowers available in the instance). I’ll probably need to l2p flamethrowers again to check on this. Thanks.

I would recommend staying away from grenades until you can get the grandmaster trait for them. As for general tips on how to play your engi, the class and way to play varies so much depending on if you like to use kits or not (I feel kits is the way to go but it does require high APM to be competitive). Best advice I can give is to head to the mists and just play around with it. I primarily used ft/eg for leveling and still do to this day except when doing a dungeon and someone else wants me to go grenades for the vuln stacks. Get comfortable being in mid to close range because aside from grenade kit (and even grenade kit can be difficult at times to use from max range because of grenade flight time), and pistols the vast majority of an engineer’s damage is done at this distance, the nice thing is by the time you can spend 20 points in traits you can have permanent swiftness and vigor from said swiftness with 10 in tools and 10 in alchemy, simply by switching out your kits. The very best recommendation I can make though is to head to the mists and spend some time there testing out the different available builds and playstyles.
