Engineer Profession Icon
We’ve had some issues over the years with folks being able to tell the difference between the Engineer and Elementalist profession icons, in particular when they are shrunk down to smaller sizes for party UI. This became even more apparent when we began testing
our updated large squad UI. As a result, we’re going to be changing the engineer icon to better differentiate between the two. We’ve also done a bit of re-work to better differentiate the icons between Scrapper, Tempest, Engineer and Elementalist.Source: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/Handful-of-HoT-Notes/first#post5624087
Mate, we have bugs not corrected, lack of synergy inside traits line, poorly designed elite spec around AI when we said a long time ago we did not want it, plus the worst ever elite core mechanic (function gyro), we give feedback to obtain improvement and there is still nothing. Are we heard? Not really…
So why bother about a new Engi icon?
Maybe make the ele icon depict all 4 attunements, and the engineer icon depict something more than the grenade?

Well elementalist are delicate little flowers, wouldn’t want them getting hurt :P.

The Engi Icon is an Elixir Bottle, not a Grenade.

Because eles complained.

its actually a bomb
It’s an elixir. The fuse wouldn’t be in the right place.
Also it should be a wrench.
Engineers can’t even agree on what their icon is, sounds like the best candidate to change. :P
Warlord Sikari (80 Scrapper)

Toxo, we’ve done pvp with you when someone was on an elementalist. The symbol is always red. This has always been its concept art.

Why not both? The designer may have intended the fuse and stopper to be bomb and elixir

Because when they make them smaller they remove virtually all texture and use practically a filled in silhouette.

Because that same designer wouldn’t put that image on the bomb kit.

At the time this images were made, there was a trait in game called “Elixir Infused Bombs”.
Mind blown.

Yes and they would be showing through art an optional trait by placing it permanently on the bomb kit.
Pray tell what part of this shows the elixir.

Either way it’s some kittenty art. My father thought it was something crashing into a globe.

I was just kidding, I think it is meant as a bomb too. But maybe there got something recycled one way or another, because Elixir B has the exact same shape like the icon except the fuse.

Actually look at toss elixir b the elixir is not as spherical as it appears.

guess it’s supposed to be something like this ancient fire bomb
which is basically a clay bottle xD
I’d settle with a gear/cog icon
- It is consistent with the Scrapper’s circular icon (which happens to look like a sawblade)
- It is consistent with tracing the roots of the profession from the Charr iron legion
- Our present icon appeals more for demolitions/Crazy Ivan profession
- A gear/cog represents the engineer’s ability to set smaller components into motion towards a greater result
(or stated another way, a gear/cog represents the clockwork nature of our profession; we must use our many tools and kits at once to achieve a goal, or else we do not work)

Isn’t the cog taken by the charr racial symbol? I think that’s why they didn’t make Druid a leaf symbol to avoid comparison to the sylvari racial symbol.

I think a cog would be a bit…unoriginal and tbh not even representing engineer quite well. Rather something like a wrench indeed would be more fitting imo

The charr racial symbol is essentially a gear inside of a gear; however, I don’t think it should prevent a variation of the same circular theme or else preclude the cog as a profession icon. To me, something like a wrench turning the center of a cog would represent the class better than our present icon.
I think your point about the druid symbol is correct to a degree because the icon also conflicts with the vigor boon, which actually is a leaf. I’d argue the devs did not go with a leaf icon for druids because it does not capture the concept of a druid, which focuses more on the mystical properties of light, hence their sun and moon icon.

I see the Engineer icon as an elixir bottle. The ‘fuse’ I’ve always interpreted it as simply a rope/thread to attach it to the armor for easier throw/consume access. Would make more sense to have them attached to the armor than in a pouch the Engineer has to rummage through to find the elixir he/she needs at any precise moment.
Additionally, while another icon could express the Engineer’s diversity other than a bomb/elixir (wrench would make more sense thematically, but you aren’t forced to run constructs or toolkit either), it’s not the only profession having this. An elementalist doesn’t just manipulate fire (icon should show all four elements); a Mesmer doesn’t have to actually wear a mask or be glamorous (a butterfly would represent the class more, as per shatter effects), Warrior’s class icon could be very well any other Soldier icon, etc.
We will have to wait to see the new Scrapper icon, and settle with it if there’s no more icon clashes. I don’t think ANet would change the icon more times ‘just’ because the class’ playerbase ain’t happy with it.
I think a spanner wrench would be suitably unique and iconic to suffice.
I’m fine with it, even tho a rather mechaniced icon would have served us better, like the quarter-gear that is already the class-symbol for this subforum.
Neet, I kinda like the new one better than the old one
I liked both old icons (engineer and scrapper) more like the new ones. Why is the new scrapper icon a hammer? Wouldn’t a gyro fit much more?

No, it makes perfect sense. Let’s be real, the real reason anyone is going to use Scrapper for is either hammer or the traits. No one likes gyros.
This new icon is possibly the worst thing in the game. It looks like a children’s plastic toy mallet rather than a weapon. A wrench would be far more fitting to the class, and might actually look like something a scrapper would actually use.
I like the new engie icon. I don’t like too much the scrapper one… but it works.

I liked the scrapper circular gear. Not a fan of the current hammer or the new engie icon. I prefer both older ones. (elite and normal)
Luckily, I was a little let down by the engineer elite spec, to the point that I’m not sure how much I’ll play my engie in HoT, so it won’t bother me too much.
The new Icon
For some reason now that reminds me of the new mentor commander tag. XD

The scrapper icon reminds me of a rubber toy hammer. Couldn’t we get a hammer icon more like perfectly weighted’s? Or the sawblade with a cog-shaped hole in the middle(or vice-versa)?
Please? :<
