I’m new to the game, just in case the topic wasn’t clear.
My question is, what does Rocket Boots actually do?
I used it in combat before, but I wasn’t sure if I actually hit anything with it since I dashed right through everything.
skill description said “damaging foes with your rocket exhaust.”
can someone explain to me what it does exactly?
is there suppose to be a animation, or am I just suppose to go through?

It does a small blast of damage where you “take off”. It’s also a blast finisher, removes immob/cripple/chill, and is a gap closer/creator.

(use it for the gap closing/creating ability and the blast finisher*, not for the damage).

  • Smoke Bomb + Rocket Boots = stealth getaway. Really good for resetting the fight.

I think the damage component on the skill itself happens when you initiate the skill – so just around that spot is where the damage occurs.

As for uses of the skill: Rocket Boots + Speed boosters (Slick Shoes toolbelt, Toolkit Kit Refinement effect, Swiftness) = increased distance. Combined with the way the skill actually launches you slightly upward for a moment, you can overcome barriers that are otherwise unsurmountable.

so the initial area where you started is where you caused damage, not where you dashed?

The Rocket Boots slot skill is only used as a utility to escape fights (primarily in PvP, almost a necessity for escaping WvW zergs) as well as for a blast finisher. However, the toolbelt skill, Rocket Kick, is one of our harder hitting abilities for both condition and power builds on a relatively short cooldown.

Where to begin… at a glance it looks like nothing more than an escape mechanism. It’s potential; however, is much greater than that. A base cd of 20 secs gives us a lot of room to be creative in how we dictate a fight.

Gap opener/ Closers

-getting away, staying on top of (duh)

-mitigating AI damage: necro minions, ranger beasts, mesmer illusions. Drag their pets away from the villain then rocket boots away from the pets while maintaining range (dmg) on the villain. Pets for whatever reason are generally ignored in this game. They do A LOT of dmg, eliminating this greatly benefits you.

-immediate LoS (when available): In a really, really close fight but your heal down? Rocket Boots out of the villain’s LoS. Whatever is around, be it a giant rock, wall corner, up a flight a stairs. Being able to buy time in a close fight is invaluable. Boots really help you get that time.

-Ward jumping: You can get past wards with these babies. Necro’s wall of terror, guardian line of warding, etc. (Brain just panicked ankitten ot 100% sure on this one but fairly certain you can)

-Rooftop jumping: A large hole in the ground is rocket boot’s best friend. You can leap over these gaps while the villain will have to walk around. This allows you to kite more efficiently. Or conversely, cut the villain off he is trying to kite you.

The list goes on and on depending on your situation. Rocket kick is also a very reliable source of damage once you get the range down.

Blast finisher, I won’t go to in depth on these as you can look them up with the respective field but keep in mind the effect happens when you LAND and it’s aoe. You can leap to an ally and help them out by a small splash heal (water field) stealth (smoke field) etc.

I can’t play w/o rocket boots, let alone another class. Cheers.

Blast finisher at point of use. Use to might stack in fire fields or heal burst in water fields.
Escape. It’s got like a 1200 range so use it for roaming or for a big escape.
Toolbet hits hard with an even harder hitting burn. At close range it’s one of our best offensive toolbelt.

One fun thing I was doing tonight, using the runes of REDACTED was to drop the smoke bomb, blast it with shield 4 twice and then rocket boots for 4 seconds of stealth while flying into an enemy zerg and depositing BoB. Then once that goes off, drop supply crate on those not knocked back for another round of interrupts. It was mostly a suicide run, but man, watching those guys mash 1 with 5+ stacks of confusion was fun as heck.

Rocket boots are the most amazing thing the ANet devs have given us thus far. Forget the damage, and embrace yet another blast finisher, which works well in combo with the HT tool belt skill, just hit F1 then Rocket boots for a large radius AoE heal for around 1k+.

And if you drop and overchage the Heal Turret, then blast it, then Rocket boots, you heal for 8k+ and share about 5.5k with up to 5 ppl around you.

They are excellent with MOST builds, seriously.

After playing around a bit with rocket boots they are literally a must-have in WvW. It’s effectively a ride the lightning that cures annoying conditions and acts as a blast finisher. It also gives you a low cooldown-high damage attack ability.

They really are a must have. I love running nade/bomb/tool kits, but every single time I run that I die and curse that I didn’t have rocket boots equipped. I may win a couple of fights, but I just don’t have the escape or the gap closers when I run those 3 kits. It’s such a good ability.

Also, just because I don’t think it was mentioned, while the Blast finisher activates where you land, you do not have to launch from or land into a combo field for it to count. You simply have to pass through one.

An example of this would be the Flamethrower/Elixir Gun Might stacking rotation, where you drop Napalm, Acid Bomb within Napalm, sending you back 400 range, and then using Rocket Boots, sending you through Napalm and landing on the other side, triggering a second Area Might stack.

If you haven’t guessed from reading the responses, it’s more of a player-versus-player skill, most useful in WvW. If you’re new to the game and just killing stuff out in the world, this is probably not the skill you want.
