I’ve been playing an engineer since I bought the game. I didn’t know the base game was free and just bought the expansion since it said free copy of gw2 with it. Anyway i’m level 40 now and have switched everything around constantly and its hard for me to find a happy medium with my build.

I’m using 2 pistols with mostly power / precision / ferocity on my gear. I mainly use Healing turret, Bomb kit, Flame thrower and elite mortar kit while switching up my 9 slot from the machine gun turret to elixir gun and what not.

I use the trait line that has the speedy kits right now and have it maxed out. Not sure which one to get at level 45 I have plenty of hero points.

any tips would be appreciated I’ve only been playing solo pve doing map completions. I would like to try my hand at a dungeon tonight for the first time.

Pistols are commonly Condition builds. So Power/Precision/Ferocity don’t do much to help you. But, at Level 40, it’s hard to go too wrong on anything you do. I’d just advise to keep your Armor and Weapon Levels as close to your actual level as you can. You might use Karma to buy weapons/armor from the Heart’s vendors. And every 5 levels or so, buy some armor on the TP if you have the silver. BUT, be careful. There are a lot of unscrupulous people putting level 40’ish stuff for sell on the Trading Post for ridiculous amounts of gold. This stuff should cost 2 silver or so at the most. Just for fun, I’m leveling a Warrior and noticed this recently. It’s shameful.

As to which Trait Line to unlock next, you might want to go into Firearms for your Pistols. Alchemy will give you some good passive defensive traits, and Inventions will unlock Mecha Legs which gives permanent Swiftness which can be used in lieu of Speedy Kits.

Pistols are condition focussed. If you plan to keep the power focussed gear i wohld suggest running rifle and later hammer.
If you enjoy pistols then go for condition focussed gear.

This choice can also determine the next specialization you choose, for example if you choose to go condition then firearms is good. If you want power or are unsure, go explosives.

But while leveling i wouldn’t worry too much, everything is unlocked at level 80.

How to use healing turret effectively:
Drop, overcharge, pickup to reduce the cooldown to 15 seconds instead of 20.
If you can’t pick it up then blow it up with f1 immediately.
This greatly increasea the healing you receive from it.

The other turrets normally ar not worth using.

You might have a hard time in dungeons, they are pretty tough at the relevant level and finding people to play with might be tough at that level. But if you understand the mechanics its completely doable.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I’m going to get a rifle and try it out. I’ve been using double pistols since level 6. So i’ll just need to get back into the rifle.

Which weapon sigils and armor enhancements should I be using?

If you don’t plan to run dungeons right now dontworry about it as you cycle gear really quickly. However investing in bloodlust sigil is worth it, its quite mazing at lower levels but tapers of later.
Runes i guess you could go anything with power, precision and if you feel you need it some vitality.

I actually was using bloodlust sigils, they were 19c a piece so I figured why not buy 6 of them.

So since my gear is all +power precision and ferocity now are the kits i’m using stack with power? Healing turret / Bomb / Flamethrower / Grenade. I assume the burning / poison ect is condition but what about the explosion of the bombs and grenades? I don’t really find myself using the rifle that often. Normally its just toolbelt skill + a bleed grenade. Switch to flamethrower and use 2 and its over, or I use bombs on big packs I can pull huge amounts of monsters it seems like with bombs.

Flamethrower is actually a power weapon. But the burn is also used in condition builds! However, bombs and grenades are awesome hybrid weapons. Means you can run either power or condition or even both mixed with those kits.

Awesome, as a new player it’s hard to distinguish which are power and which are condi. I’m loving the engineer so far. Almost feels like stance dancing.

Most engineer weapons are heavily Hybridised.
Your utility choices are just fine. you can also opt for elixir gun which has very high damage on 4.

For a new engineer you seem to have amazing intuition for how engineer functions. Took me much longer to grasp the class!

Wahoo!!

I also suggest to use Sigil of Speed next to Bloodlust. This gives you much more movement speed wich is quite handy for exploration.

May I ask you if you’re on EU or NA?

BUT, be careful. There are a lot of unscrupulous people putting level 40’ish stuff for sell on the Trading Post for ridiculous amounts of gold. This stuff should cost 2 silver or so at the most. Just for fun, I’m leveling a Warrior and noticed this recently. It’s shameful.

there is nothing unscrupulous going on with that. level 40ish stuff salvages into expensive common mats used to make t7 mats, so those things are expensive. simply find other sources for gear, such as heart vendors near your level.

Dude, I’m talking a Rare, Level 39 axe for 2g 27silver. – and many others. Look it up if you don’t believe me. And it’s not for an unusual skins, either. These items are clearly there to sucker someone new to the game into buying it. I’ve crafted ascended and legendaries, so I know what I’m talking about. There is no reason for these things to be on the TP priced they way they are.

lol oh, tbh ive never searched for that kind of stuff because its not a good idea to put gold into gearing up until youre 80. ive only searched for things worth salvaging (for some luck), which obviously these arent.

i believe the one you mention can come from doing an ascalonian world boss on a 39 or lower toon. people dont do that frequently, so it has a high price cuz obviously it looks like a pretty good weapon for a 39-45 toon. still doesnt make it unscrupulous though. if you go farm a few, you could crash the price. or make bank. depending on if a speculator notices.

it certainly is not something you need. dont spend more than like 20s on any piece of gear until level 80.

I haven’t spent more than 5-10s on a piece of gear and that’s rare most go for 2s each. Level 52 now and I only buy gear every 10 levels and I’m still in my 40 set waiting to finish the story quest.
I play on a US server.
I save most my money and have near 15g from leveling and selling stuff I find.

Use drop gear until 80, level chef and huntsman. Decide whether you want to focus pve, pvp, wvw, pvx, w/e. Level leatherworking. Farm for ascended pieces based on what gameplay type you prefer.

I recommend updating gear at least every 10 level. It’s just more smooth and fun to level with mighty gear
