New to Engineer
if you’re leveling just go power gear and then power/prec. ft/bombs work well. permanent swiftness with tools 10 really helps with map completion.
Where are you planning on using your engineer? PvE, PvP, WvW?
My standard advice for new engineers: learn all your combo fields and finishers. The wiki has it all listed.

The Flamethrower scales poorly to level 80. I only recommend it if you use it in conjunction with elixirs for might stacking.
It is, however, excellent for leveling.
As for armor, if you want to mix toughness into your build for any reason, I recommend Knight (Toughness/Power/Precision) if you use a rifle, or Rabid (Condition Damage/Precision/Toughness) if you use pistols.
thx for the replies. i was thinking on using flamethrower in dungeons mostly using the trait that gives might while you wield the flamethrower…. ill give it a shot. I have to admit that this class is almost as fun as my necro xD
Here’s a tip.
Use pistol/pistol or pistol/shield even for power builds when leveling, and get bloodlust and speed sigils on them.
Speed Sigil will give you nearly infinite swiftness alone, and speedy kits or med kit can help supplement that, very handy.
