So here i am, new to GW2 and to the Engineer proff (lvl 14 atm). I tried a ranger to lvl 9 and the biggest surprise i got was how fragile the engineer is against some mobs.

Atm i am mostly doing Pve content with my first pvp experience last night, doing the new Eotm map. Needless to say i didn’t contribute too much, but did get some xp and had fun (except for the long walks back to the fight)

I have unlocked the gun turret and flame turret, as well as the healing turret, bomb kit, grenade kit, shrapnel mine. And i run around with dual pistols or rifle most of the time.

I currently use everything, just depending on how the wind blows. But i am not really sure what is better then the other.
One thing i noticed in a small dungeon type of thing and i WvW is that bombs and grenades are a bit unreliable. I find the mobs often get pulled out or run away from the area of effect before the bombs go off or grenades land.

So i am very much open for tips. What are the do’s and don’ts of this profession for both pvp and pve.

Is there dedicated pvp gear? Also, i did get upscaled in level for pvp, but do weapon dmg and gear stats also get boosted?

Since I also leveled my eng not long ago, heres what I can tell you about it:

For running around, use the trait “Speedy kits” in the last line and rocket boots. You can get perma swiftness easily as an engi if you combo this with med kit as heal (#5 gives swiftness, too). I found the kit to be the most useful for leveling, as you get a fast heal with the toolbelt skill. Later on you can learn to use the heal turret.

Next thing, dont use grenades befor lvl 60, when you can trait 30 points in the first line to get grenadier. I ran around with rifle and bombs (smoke bomb is your best friend when you want to do some melee AoE dmg). You can also use Static Discharge trait (last line) for additional dmg. Combine this with rifle turret, otherwise stay away from turrets while leveling.

I did this with power (later bersi) equip. You can also go the condition route (with double pistol then). Just try what suits you more.

In generell, do what you already did, try everything. There are some skills which might be a little bit worse on first glance, but if you find a way to use it effectively for your way of playing, thats better then using scheme X.

*note that this is just PvE/leveling advice. I suggest to learn your skills and possibilities in PvE with “easy” AI, and then later adapt that to PvP. It might well be disheartening to go against other players without much experience. But always do whats fun to you.

Part of the magic when using grenades are having the “feel” where to throw the grenades based on the movement and behavior pattern of the target. You need to get more experience and your grenade throwing skills will get better. What help is using Freeze Grenade at the beginning of your grenade fun session to make next hits a lot easier to connect.

Bombs are easier to connect with the enemy, but still helps using Glue Bomb or combining with Freeze Grenade to get more hits if they are running around. Usually it is a good idea to find out who has the aggro and go near him so you won’t have to chase your mobs with bombs as they are pretty bad for that.

I guess by PvP you mean WvW. For WvW there is no dedicated gear. As a low level I would focus more on controling the enemies as you can cripple/chill/immob/knockdown/etc players in WvW with same success than level 80, but your damage will be lower.

So when I was leveling engineer in WvW I liked to run Rifle, Bomb Kit (Grenade for sieging), Mine, Net Turret and stuff like that just to control people and do a bit of damage while the rest of people were killing them. But that was me and do what you enjoy the most.

For PvP itself you will get automatically leveled to 80 with all skills and traits and there is a ton of builds you can practice and choose from. Also going into mists is a good idea if you want to check some traits/skills and figure out what you like the most and want to focus on during levelling.

Thanks for the tips guys. From what i read in your replies and others i i should swap from the normal weapons to packs back and forth in a battle. Something i never really thought off. I gues i am still stuck in the old mmo box.

I must say i love the rifle and have that massive bomb from the bomb kit. But i’ll start trying to combine those things in battle.

Last night i had my first boss fight. Some big fire elemental type of thing in the 1-15 zone of the tiny race (i forgot their name). I didn’t manage to do any damage i think. I got killed allot and had my rifle equiped but for range i expect the pistols and grenades would have been a way better option.

I have also seen people talk about combo’s they do with their skills to get buffs, and even stealth. How does that work? I am just clueless on that works. And those finisher combo’s? And the healing turret has a combo with a waterfield, what is a waterfield?

So much to learn.

P.s.: Those that send me a PM. I cannot answer PM’s for another 2 days for some reason. But i am not german and i play on EU server Piken Square

well if u spend 20 points in alkemy u can trait IX for heal gained with kits
90% of the time u use a kit
for elite first to add is supply crate (best elite for all engy)
and for gain some lvl to fast u need just play PvP
every 1500 glory u can buy a book of knowledge (1 lvl on pve char) doing daily pvp achivements for achievement and some reward)
with booster and glory farm u can gain 3 lvl every 4h with this engy just for glory farm just kit for run and use bomb 1 2 3, nade 1 2, FT 1 and tool belt nade

Ah that heal is nice. I am not trying to get lvl 80 asap. Especialy since it is my first character i take it slow, trying to clear out those areas and do, the occasional WvW. I haven’t tried the PvP yet. But probably will this weekend.

That Fire Elemental boss used to be a LOT more difficult before.

Be aware that pistols are most condition damage weapon and they have even shorter range than the rifle, so if you are stacking power stat then stay with rifle. Grenades are pretty fine.

What you need in the first place is get more experience playing engineer and you won’t have any issues participating in that fight without dying in the future. Just watch attacks on the elementals and move out of the way and dodge. Getting good at dodging is pretty important in GW2.

Btw is it tue that engi is one of the harder classes to play?

Yes, that is true. But if you stay with it you will be able to do a lot of cool things and it press a lot of buttons during that.

I can only talkt about PvE and there the engi is the hardest class to play. It’s not like you won’t be able to manage it, but he has a huge potential and the best example of what I mean by that is this:

Drop heal turret → big ol’ bomb → fire bomb → explode turret after fire bomb goes off → big ol’ explodes → switch to shield and double click 4 → switch to elixier gun and use skill 4 → double click weaponswap for no knockback. Do all that within 3 seconds to grant 12 stacks might for 20+ seconds to all your allies.

In contrast, the Guard presses a single button and does the same (for a shorter duration however).

This is just one example of what you are able to do, same goes for massive heal or looooong stealth. You can do much but it won’t excuse mistakes.

Oh man. That is some insane combo. Not a chance in the skies i could do one like that in a short time.
I do like the engi but maiby i should try a simpler proff when starting gw2?
I watched some youtube tutorials and i am pretty intimidated.

NO! NONONONONO! Don’t give up already!! It sounds harder than it is. It’s like … like … learning how to poo into the toilet! Once you learned it it’s just a routine … most of the time ö.ö kitten.

Keep going, play engi, he’s ultra fun and a bit harder BUT rewarding!

May I ask you: do you play on EU or NA? Maybe I can meet you ingame once

Nah. Stick with engi and youll get the hang of it pretty quick. For leveling use bombs and rifle tho. Start out with rifle then just spam bomb #1. Bomb #4 will essentially make you invincible against a big group of mobs. For gearing just use “mighty” gear (power). Then at 26 use “strong” (power precision) then at 65 “berserker” (power precision crit dmg). Get a minor sigil of bloodlust off the TP and stick it on your rifle, thatll also help a lot

Carpboy is totally right, especially for leveling! Also just buy plenty of different runes that got +10 power as first stat, so you can get +60 power with your armor. Don’t waste much cash on jewelry btw.

so … EU ? SAY YES >.<

hey Engineer was my first char, because of turrets. It is very hard for the first 20 levels. I used rifle, pistols, and turrets. I was a noob :p I didn’t use traits or other kits back then. I quit, because I was just too squishy and weak damage. I made a guardian, omg was very easy mode compare to my engineer. However, after 50, I got bored, and decided to go back to my Engineer. This time I googled, watch youtubes, and checked forum for builds and stuff. about about level 30+ I was switching Flame Thrower, elixer gun and grenades. They told me, flamethrower scale well with power. It was fun again, until I hit 60, I went with healing bomb. It became easy mode, I felt like a guardian haha. Later I switch jaggaernaut flamethrower. That’s what make engineer fun!, so many builds and versatility. One time I had 30 in inventions when I got lazy, was doing mini dynamic events by myself. I let my three turrets do all the killing xD while I relax, browsed, came back and I was still alive. xD (healing turret).

edit. Don’t wvw for leveling. You should not hurry to get to 80, you will get bored of the game fast. Imo, you should try to enjoy open world pve while leveling first, and join a guild that does events.

Hey willy, i can feel you on that guardian man. I only got to lvl 3 :P

Funny as i allmost have the same setup as you now. I sometimes switch bombs for nades.

Did some team pvp yesterday and it was good fun. Only 5 kills all together during like 1-2 hours of gameplay but i enjoyed it allot.
I tried making other chars, but i just don’t love them like the engi.

thanks again for all the tips ppl.

Welcome to GW2!

Engineer is a diverse class, with many options and many kits.
it’s also one of the most entertaining (to me) because of this.

Learning how to use all your stuffs properly and when can take a little longer to get the hang off – diversity comes with a added investment

Dont give up on your engi though even thogh it may seem overwhelming at first!
If you get the hang of him, you can take on pretty much anything/anyone (bar certain bosses ofc)

Enjoying it allot. Running around with FThrower, BK, and swap between that yellow potion and EG.

Also just got the TK, and did not play too much with it, but that nr3 skill really hits hard, so i might swap the BK out for that one.

Not liking the nades too much, bit of a pain to throw the 1 bomb while strafing (or trying to) to the left.

I find myself mainly using the Rifpe, or dual pistols and switch to FT when they get close and BoB + fire bomb.
Seems to work okey. And use a healing elixir instead of the turret since it gives me a nice speed boost.

My advice for all new GW2 players: DODGE

This is a movement heavy game and standing in 1 place and shooting will result in swift and merciless deaths.

Engi has a lot of great traits for keeping Endurance regen up. Coupled with constant swiftness, we can avoid a lot of damage. Keep moving, use smart dodging, don’t spam skills, use them strategically, and have fun. Engi has a lot of build variety that makes experimentation a joy.
