Yeah, really hope it is not an AI spec. The community always hates them, and then riots until it gets nerfed. Not to mention AI specs in general are mostly bad.
personally i like AI tactic play however as it stands i think Ais will be a bad idea simply because All of the elite specs so far where developped with high damage+ aoe potential as dps focus wich means flat out drones wont ever be alive in pvp/wvw combats and even if they did drones probably wont offer what hammer engi will need for survivability or offessive play such as Protection or vigor or cleanse upkeep or immobilize or stun or daze or cripple constantly , from what i hear they will basically replace turrets skill kit wise
We already have our AI skill set in Turrets. But we’re the only Profession (not counting Revenant) without Signets. I know that Signets are supposed to be magical, but these drones would be functionally like Signets in that they would provide a passive effect with an activated ability (disabling the passive), and in the case of Engineers a Toolbelt skill.
Wolfineer seems to share my hope that it’ll be a Signet-like skill set.

i think ai/turrets are problematic cause they are really hard to balanced – you need to balance them in a way that if you take “all” u can theyre not too strong and if you only take one its not to little… and thats really difficult with persistant “skills” that linger active
I just want the forge to be viable as power-based with good melee-range sustain (some stab or resistance maybe), skillful cc, and solid mobility. Throw in some interesting mechanics to add depth and I’m very satisfied.
AI doesn’t interest me in the least. It’s either too good, giving a large bonus for zero or minimal effort input from the player or it’s unplayable. If things are balanced well, active skills and play should always be a good deal more rewarding than passivity.

The current trailer shows that Drones will be hovering around the Forge so with Forge designed to be melee Specialization for Engi it would weaken Forge too much if the drones can be destroyed due to Forge’s melee nature.

Some skill icons got datamined and they are looking pretty much like minion type skills. So it isn’t so unlikely we will get these (still hoping we won’t).

I believe(or hope) the drones will work not as AI minions but as passive drones hovering around the engineer like that of the trailer, these drones when slotted in the utility slots will give passive effects like healing drone giving engineer regen or attack drone passively attacking nearby enemies, the drones active abilities will be on the engis toolbelt which he/she can activate at will.
Actually if you think about it this idea would actually be better if not more op than AI minions since you won’t be able to kill them, lol.
Im fine if the drones are AI, it doesnt really bother me. But please dont make them just extra dps. Something utility and team based would be pretty sweet. Basically some support.
Ex: Drones hover around teammates in the area and provide personal boons at set intervals. (Protection, or Regen).
