Rolling an Asura does break the immersion, in my opinion. It’s the other races who are the Engineers of their time for fashioning a Flamethrower, mine, or poison dart shooting pistols. Heh.
Honestly, try any other race and you’ll probably be more sold on the conceptual art.

Don’t forget, everyone got that. We got the ability to throw a vial of it for pickup.
I disagree completely the charr are the ones who established the engineer class, and it relies more on mechanical power and gunpowder, while asura inventions revolve around the use of magitech. I personally see charr as being like scientist, while asura feel more along the lines of alchemists or artificers.
Edit this is not to say that I wouldn’t like more skills for us engineer I just don’t want to see anything along the lines of a “magic laser cannon” but that is just me personally.
Karl Marx: “Go away! Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough!”
Just imagine that you’re the MacGyver of Asuran Engineers. All you need is a paperclip kit.

A laser kit would be pretty phenomenal actually. And for your sake, you could say it was a Charr invention based off the ghost-laser-gun from the starter area.
I think engineers create their own weapons. that makes any engineer a kind of adventuring inventor.
Even asura engi’s are still inventors. thet just happen to take an interest in the new charr tech over the magitech that the rest of their race focuses on.

But where is our magitech? Why is it that Engi’s are represented by Charr technology predominantly, but nothing from the other races (ESPECIALLY the Asura?) NO NERFATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!
Honestly, Because the lore says so. It is simply in the lore that most of out tech comes from the Charr and that they were the original engineer.

Our magitech comes in racials and story line. The reason we use charr technology is because lorewise, it’s new and other races have adopted it because it’s proven so effective.
if we were going to define engineer as any inventor using any races tech then all asura would be engineers because all asura are inventors. The class of engineer specifically refers to those of any race who have taken an interest in charr tech. And then choose to utilize it.

I disagree with the point about all Asura being engineers. They are not. The warriors/guardians make up the “Peacekeepers” of Rata Sum. They utilize the technology created by the intelligent Asura. Elementalists are probably present in laboratories due to their affinity with The Eternal Alchemy. Engineers are the ones who put it all together and create the technology that results. I’m not saying that all Asura aren’t smart (though arguably we have not seen a brilliant inventor from the Asura who was catalogued as a warr/guard/thief/mesmer). We’ve also seen plain-business Asurans, all of the merchants with the exception of Moto, do not appear to have any connection with inventing.
On the point about Charr being known for their technology… They used their technology to kill their primitive religious brethren (Flame Legion). The Airships used for killing Zhaitan and/or sieging Orr? Asuran inventions. The turrets we used to have for defending Tequatl before the rework? Also Asuran.
I would argue to say that most other races aside from Charr and Asura appear to have no connection or affinity with the engineer. After all it was introduced to the humans via the Charr, the Sylvari have no semblance of mechanistic to their society, and the Norn (as proven by Knut Whitebear in the Destiny’s Edge novel) believe such inventions and devices to be both weak, cowardly, and toyish.
A quick recap though;
- Turrets: Charr inventions. It’s a gun with a timer on a tripod for crying out loud.
- Kits: Charr inventions. Gritty, primitive, simple – effective yes, but not complex at all in their workings.
- Elixirs: These may be Asuran or Sylvari in nature I think. I only say Asuran because they believe in the Eternal Alchemy, and the first thing that comes to mind aside from FMA Transmutation is potions… One could also look at them and say they are Sylvari too though, jury is out.
- Gadgets: I would like to say these are Asuran. Speedy boots that shoot oil, Safety Goggles with targeting, a spring loaded ram head built into a belt, and a throwable mine. The last one is obviously charr, as are the boots. The other two may be Asuran
?
NOT GOOD ENOUGH! We obviously lack Asuran technology that would be critical in us being something that could be considered an Engineer, as opposed to a Commando.

The asura storylines show us that we are inventors no matter what class we choose. it also shows us that all 3 Colleges compete in the Snaff Prize. So what I said was that IF we were going to label any inventor using any technology as engi’s then all asura would be engi’s. But that isn’t what the engineer class is.
A-net has comfirmed that the engineer class is a charr class that other races have adopted because of proven results:
“Engineer technology really developed with the Charr first and foremost.” “The Iron Legion is the start of all of this, and the Engineer profession has spread to the other races from there. The People of Tyria have seen it in combat over the past few years and have seen the effectiveness of an engineer. And so you are going to see Engineers of all races although it is a little bit more common to see a Charr Engineer than anybody else. So it all started with the Charr and their technological development.” http://www.wartower.de/artikel/artikel.php?id=562
This is what the engineer class is. So while most if not all the asura are adept at inventions utilizing their own magitech. (e.g.: golemancers are a good example and the golem racial options demonstrate this), the engineer class in asura society aren’t the ones who are putting magitech together, even though they also most assuredly also can. The engineer class of asura are the ones who specialize in the study of charr tech. Not asura magitech.
But all 3 asura colleges (that all asura attend at least one of) could be considered colleges of some type of engineering. That just isn’t what is referenced when speaking of the engineer playable class.
And considering charr society, the commando image makes sense and is intentional: “When we talk about the Engineer he is very much a Combat-Engineer and good in inventing things that are useful in a combat situation.”
On the complexity of charr technology, don’t be so quick to judge. There’s asura NPC in the black citadel who is getting a tour of some charr tech and the asura can’t understand how they can operate without the use of magic. This confirms that asura specialize in magitech rather than complicated RL tech. and it speaks to charr ingenuity since they get such great, reliable and consistent results while handicapping themselves. So charr tech does get complicated. And it is definitely an area of interest for some asura.

I’m sorry but by application, we are not engineers – my original point still stands. You can say “these utility skills were all INVENTED by somebody therefore it makes them an engi”. That is not the case. We run around with guns, bombs, mines, flamethrowers – there is neither an engineerish feel to the class, nor an actual engineerish skill type. We should either be renamed Commando, or as I stated originally – when they add new skills in the future they need to add ACTUAL engineer skills.
lol
with this we just not call warrior but barbaria
they shout and use brutal force
and necro, call it a vampire
and ranger we can call it Robin hood of all newby
engy use kits and gadget
kit = tecnology if we see on other weapon (sword, mace, dagger, bow, staff, ecc)
elixir = alchemy on ancient time is tecnology
see it on the game not on other thing

What Dredd said^. A-net specifically used the term ‘combat-engineer’ in that interview. They are engineers. The term ‘engineer’ fits the class, even if it doesn’t fit the preconceptions built from other games and genres. Combat engineers (engineer for short) fit easily within charr society.
“A combat engineer, also called pioneer or sapper in many armies, is a soldier who performs a variety of construction and demolition tasks under combat conditions. Such tasks typically include constructing and breaching trenches, tank traps and other fortifications, bunker construction, bridge and road construction or destruction, laying or clearing land mines, and other physical work in the battlefield. More generally, the combat engineer’s goals involve facilitating movement and support of friendly forces while impeding that of the enemy.
Usually, a combat engineer is also trained as an infantryman, and combat engineering units often have a secondary role fighting as infantry. Beyond self-defense, combat engineers, infantry and assault troopers from armored corps units are generally the only troops that engage in the assault while dismounted. This role is limited by a lack of fire support (such as that obtained by infantry units from their mortars and recoilless rifles). However combat engineers typically do have extensive antiarmor capability in their infantry fighting role, such as with antitank missiles. There are no advanced academic qualifications required to be a combat engineer. The term “engineer” is not to be confused with the term applied to Professional Engineer or Chartered Engineer."

By what definition do you make the statements that we are not engineers by application. How many commandos or combat engineers have you known? It appears to me the issue is not with the profession, but your personal view of it. Which is very very much in the minority.
