OUTRAGE Mortar item better than real skill?
Uhm where do I get those mortars?
Yes the mortar has some serous problems. The damage is low, I guess it can’t crit either? Also the range has to be about 2k to be efficient, 1.2k is much too low. And the main problem: the mortar simply bugs in laggy ways: if you use a skill it sometimes won’t be used but goes on cd, then you keep firing and then the mortar “kittenes” everything out -.-’’ sometimes not even that, but if he does yo ucan be sure he misses everything. It sux and requires a fix – SINCE RELEASE!!!

idk a guild mate had the item and showed it to me at fire ele fight.
my dmg on it was 179 as engie on skill 1. same as my elite. it matched up perfectly. His was 649… on 1 skill. THEN, i watched it to 1/3 of the health on a nearby mob on auto attack.
I just remember that when I’ve tested the mortar elite on a golem in the mists, it did less damage than my rifle-autoattack. That’s about all I’ve got to say about this “elite”.
And I didn’t know if I’m supposed to laugh my backside off or just go and cry in a corner.
A useless elite I wish they would address.
Well there are many useless elites, but engi got 2 of 3 …

Elixir X isn’t bad at all IMO. It’s randomness hurts, but in turn it’s CD is very short and it works with a lot of traits.
Mortar is… annoying. I noticed is has a few really cool uses, but the consistent bugs are problematic. If those were fixed, IMO we’d have a quite usable elite already:
- Still fails to fire very often, getting “jammed”, then firing 2-3 shots in a row. This additionally “eats” #2-#5 shots, spitting out #1 shots instead when it finally fires. This sometimes blocks the Mortar for 10+ seconds.
- Still fails to crit.
- Still fails to turn in time, sometimes waiting 10-15 seconds before finally turning. This also blocks any shot during that time.
- Still lags on using it, causing players to “double-tap”, releasing it again.
I suppose it’s a matter of opinion but I don’t see why any engineer would want to use an elite skill other than supply drop. That thing is awesome.

Honestly, I feel the first step is to make it a shoulder fired weapon, removing the immobility of this. That is the first step needed in my eyes.

Or just make it a turret, that fires automatically? Or at least give you the option to pick it up and move at a reduced cooldown like turrets… very few fights stay in one place for 120 seconds.
Odd that you mention that Zaviel, because the game actually classifies it as a turret, and turret traits effect it.
But your right, very few fights are stationary. Now I could see it thriving in WvW on keep sieges or defense, but it still needs work to thrive there. The biggest problem I see with it, on a realistic level, is that to me, I feel I have more effect using the grenade kit in the same situations. Honestly, an elite should not feel out done by a regular utility skill.

That wiki said you can’t use the Deployable mortar… “Drops a mortar that behaves like a turret, therefore it cannot be used like a typical mortar.”
That is false. I used it yesterday. Its not just an auto-firing item. It might be hitting 1k at 80, but only on auto mode. Like i said 1/3 of HP in the <25 areas easily.
All the other complaints with out Elite are completely valid though. Especially the ones about buggy firing, and losing 2-5 types cause of it.
I think my biggest heartache with this is, why doesn’t our ‘turret’ autofire? Even then i’d be pretty poor Elite skill. I’d rather have the MRLS kit on my back or something.
Not trying to get the item nerfed, however, no item should give you access to an Elite skill from another class unless its event based (FT and such at boss fights/karka area type things, even the FT at karka area are different things altogether).

This is incorrect. It used to be that it was a turret internally, and a single turret trait affected it (+range).
It no longer does, and it no longer lists Turret in the tooltip, either.

This. If they worry about us running with it out all the time, they could give it a limited number of charges, like the elementalists conjured weapons.
Never mind that if we switched to a kit or our main weapon we would pretty much lose the launcher and have the skill go on recharge.
Just about the only time i found the mortar useful was for cracking those sonic turrets during the molten alliance. This in large part to its stability.
They should just make it a kit with CD that puts the engi immobile and fix the kittening skills and buff them. But then again the grenade kit already does what ever the kitten mortar does and better.
im fine that mortar roots you if they gave it higher range/more damage. whats the point of being rooted if a warrior can snipe you at the same range your mortar can fire?

Sadly it seems that the engine limits weapon range to about 1500 for the most part (siege weapons excepted, but then they are also excepted from the 5 targets AOE max).
All in all i suspect the mortar feeds into the siege angle that ANet has for turrets in SPVP. Meaning that an engineer can set up shop on a point using turrets and the mortar to hold it.
But that, and some similar scenarios in WVW, are just about the only place it makes sense. The rest of the game is just too mobile for this kind of mentality.

I was a little bored at work today. What U think about Mobile Mortar it’s not perfect but…

The mortar would be a great elite if it would autocast it’s 1-5 (whilte beeing mobile with you like Witaminka said) if you cast 1-5. Or simply – even if it just would use 1 whenever you use a skill for 30 sec? I mean god fix this elite already.

^ this ^
-Autocasting
-Synergy with turret traits
-allowed to crit.
-Explode (doing a blast finisher and launch effect) when destroyed
= awesome elite.
imho
Even when im sitting on Mortar I cant target myself, rly sad, lets look at tooltip hmmm, nope no stability at all, but i ve got it, 3 min stability buff from the sky yay, another history that u cant crit with Mortar, make it mobile pls, pls…

I remember the only time mortar was important and used was when we had the southsun cove event.
Lots of mortars elite was lined up while all the other classes was fighting in the front line, engineers was kicking kitten at the back and popping crabs everywhere.
A truly magical moment for all engineers.
Passionate engineer; self-proclaimed kitmaster. <3
The saddest thing, i ve got 2k hours on my engi and i used my Mortar in combat twice Oo, once in WvW while defending tower and today…

Too bad i was going necro at that time, but then i pretty much did the equivalent. Switched to staff and minions, and just sat back to refresh them ever so often.
Having less favorable elites isnt unusual. Every class has elites they dont use all the time, but i have never seen a profession just ignore an elite this much. By comparison i find that Mortar is worst then several racial elites, perhaps even most but i dont play every race.
I’d certainly rate Wolf form, Snow Leopard form, Hounds of Balthazar higher then mortar.
