I’ve been playing this game for a while now but still have not hit 80. I have a 76 ranger but I can not decide on what type of prof I want to be my main. I’ve been looking at engineer and it seems like my type of class with the wide array of abilities and a high skill required to master the class. I just wanted to hear your opinion on the class.

If you have to decide between ranger and engi, everyone here will tell you to pick engi.

All classes are pretty well equal with some minor exceptions. Engineers are the most versatile and as I understand the most difficult to master, but the practice it requires doesn’t come without reward. They hit like a train if in the right hands and if you’re a fan of WvW are probably one of if not the most scary class to run in to if you’re caught alone with one.
It all depends on how you like to play. I would say if you do decide to make one, give it an honest try. Don’t level to 10 and decide you don’t like it, either go all the way to 80 or at least get close, because mastering an Engineer can and probably will take more than 80 levels to do.

But in response to what you’ve said above, why I like my Engineer is:
Ranged combat is very effective in this game and Engineers do a very good job with it.
I love stacking conditions and next to Necro’s Engi’s are the best at this.
If you layout the right loadout Engineers have very high survivability. Med-pack = 3 heals, Elixir Gun = 1 heal (Super Elixir), Supply Drop = 2 heals (healing turret + bandages) and Healing Mist. Those aren’t all the healing abilities but that’s what I can use all in one loadout on my character. Which makes me pretty hard to take down most of the time.
And lastly, my favorite part about Engi’s, is that they almost never feel boring to play because of all their kits. Bored of a rifle? Switch to flamethrower. Flamethrower not doing it for you? Switch to toolkit and throw some nails at people. Still bored? Swap to Elixir Gun and bleed, burn, stun, cripple, chill people. It’s just an overall awesome class, lol.

Just bear in mind that Engi’s are kind of like Mesmers. They may feel a bit bland at first but the longer you play them the better you’ll like them.

I leveled up a necro, engie, ranger, and warrior to 80 and my guardian to 55, which I got bored of and stopped playing. I also did theif for about an hour and didn’t like his playstyle so I dumped him. Of all these classes, the engie is my top fav. As SpellOfIniquity mentioned, it’s the most versatile class in the game. I never get bored of it and I’m constantly changing my traits around. Trying out new strategies and playstyles. Turrets, kits, bombs, grenades, pistols, rifles / control, elixirs, gadgets. It’s crazy how much that class can do and any of those traits can be mixed for some interesting results. All my other classes are pigeonholed to a single strategy because that’s the formula that works best for them. With the engie, I don’t feel any constraint.

The engie is not difficult to pickup so long as you setup a good keybind. The 1→0 on the keyboard won’t do well for the engie, so you’ll want to find something that will help you trigger your skills within a confined space on your keyboard. For instance, i have the traditional wsad movement keys. My 6→0 skills are mapped to q,e,z,x,c respectively, and my toolkit is mapped to shift+q,e,a,d. This is perhaps what will take the longest for you to adapt to. Once you get the hang of that and you memorize all the subskills with your kits, you’ll be good to go.

Also, one of the fun things to do with an engie is befriend other engies in your server. In WvW, it’s really fun to have a handful of engies setup motors or barrage the enemy with long-range grenades. It’s really quite a sight to see, especially when you’re synchronized.

Thank you both for those replies. That’s actually what I was hoping for while playing an engineer. I’ve currently got mine up to 23 as a charr. Though I didn’t like the race a lot at first it is slowly growing on me. Is the charr racial skills any good compared to some of the other choices?

The charr hidden pistol can be nice as it provides an extra evade and the toolbelt skill for it is basically a theif unload. in all honesty you are probably best to go with asura they have some fairly good utilities such as radiation field and the advantage of their small size (just don’t let any of my guildies know that I said that).

The utility skills of an Engineer are so good you’ll properly only use the racial skills once to test them and then switch back to your regular skills. The regular elite skills are somewhat lacking, so if you still thinking about switching your race you should look at what elite skills each race provides.

In hindsight I wished I’ve made my Engineer a Norn, Become the Snow Leopard is awesome to escape from a zerg in WvW or explore a map in PvE.

Well, it depends… What kind of gameplay are you planning on doing? Casual, hardcore, dungeons, living story, pve only, wvw?

I like Engineer due to the fact that when played well they are one of the best things to have in your party in all aspects of the game. They have so much to offer, whether it be healing the team with water fields and blast finishers, stacking vulnerability, they are tied with ranger as far as combo fields go but the engineer has the advantage of blasting those combo fields for team wide benefits. IMO Rangers are boring, with an Engi you are constantly switching kits, blast finishing, clearing condis(if traited) or with med kit, there is just so much an Engi has to offer. I say give it a try, no one can tell you what class to play but we sure as heck can guide you in the right direction which would be Engineer. Also I come from the TPvP aspect of the game and I can tell you right now, that a good Engineer on the the opposing team is probably one of the most annoying things in the world.
