Eng. is lacking compared to other classes in terms of damage to survivability ratio.

Again I feel Anet overlooked this class and thought because of the tools & turrets that they should have the lowest base weapon damage and lowest base survivability, I know you can spec to become a pretty beefy Eng. and pretty good damage but it’s one or other unlike any other class that can find a happy D to S ratio.

Lets take the ranger’s short bow for example, this weapon has a lower base damage but is more then made up for with it’s instant speed cast and the mobile pet (pretty much a passive condition), the Eng. on the other hand has a very low damage pistol with a slow cast time and is not made up by other abilities like other classes.

I would like you to do some testing on making the pistol standard attack instant like the rangers short bow (this should even the damage to survivability ratio), also would like you to fix duel pistol number 4 (Blowtorch) this is a mess in PvP, the cone effect does not work half the time in both pvp & pve, how about make it something like a 360 spin that increases its condition damage the closer you are to the Eng.

Also just for looks make number 2 (Poison Dart Volley) shoot from both pistols.

Engineer is doing fine if you ask me. Yes the autoattack is a bit slow, but it explodes on combat, with a trait penetrates so you can do hefty damage with 1 shot. I use the Elixer Gun also which fires way faster so I have no problem with it at all. I do fine in PvE and PvP.

I feel ya there, Eng IMO have the highest skill cap, however I made a tank-y Eng and they are tuff that’s for sure, my problem is when I do the same with all my other classes I can at least kill people, with the Eng tank my damage is to low , “Like really low” I can’t even take off any health from a target.

I’ll use my guardian for example, he is all tank but I can still kill people because at least my crits hits for over 2k, my Eng as a tank I am lucky to get a 500 crit from a bomb lol, forget about our simple shot, that hits for like 120 lol, our damage is out healed by rejuvenation spells dear lord lol.

I really do feel that Anet overlooked the simple shot damage due to our tools and turrets and that’s fine but the problem is our turrets get one shoted, I mean they are weaker then mesmer clones and at least those guys chase you down and do some damage before they are back up again in less then 5 seconds, we on the other hand have to wait at least 30 seconds to use our useless turrets, they just need to make simple shot instant like the rangers short bow attack and maybe bump up the dot damage so we are less reliant on our tools and turrets, no other class has to rely solely on there utility skills to do damage why should the Eng?

Well might be true, my survivor build on Engi has around 800 condition dmg and healing power. But haven’t been trying 1v1 much, its support / cc build. So I’ll try some 1v1 and let you know. And turrets, I just think they are bad idea at all, can’t move in a game where movement is the most important, and as you say, get one shoted. I just don’t use them at all.

Disagree with a minor thing there, Omnio, and that’s turrets. They aren’t a bad -idea-, they’re just horribly implemented. As you said, movement is extremely important in this game, which means turrets, static, damage dealing objects, should be good at area denial.

In a perfect world, a glass cannon thief would see a turret engy set up with his wrench and battle buddies (turrets) on a point and think, “Darn, better get some help for this,” rather than, “Lol, easy kill”.

Again, in theory, a bunker engy running turrets is a powerful presence. In practice, it’s a wet noodle behind tissue paper. My two cents.

Engineer take more time before getting good at it. Contrary to believe, some Engineer buuld are even more challenging then Elem. You don’t have as many Oh kitten skills, so you can’t tolerate mistake. You can’t miss your overcharge shot. You have to land your grenade, your blow torch.

You have to perma swtich between kit. Know all your skill, approximativ cooldown.

Give it some time, Engineer get really strong after a while.

I’ve tried Elementalist and Mesmer for a few hours at a time. I do quite well on them and find myself thinking often “how can they allow one build to be able to do all this?” lol. It never lasts long though, sure those 2 professions have much more success with less work than my Engi does, but I can’t stop playing Engi, no matter how mad I get sometimes. I love my overly complicated profession lol

But I’ll have to agree though, we’re not all that good.

Sure I can kill people in WvW and win an 3v1 battle with tankCAT, but I need to put in much and mich more effort in it then with my thief. A good thief can easily frustrate the kitten out of a complete party.

Very true, but I’ll say this much. I never feel a sense of accomplishment from a kill like I have with my engineer. My fingers ache from all the button presses, my mind is scrambled from trying to think so fast and throw together all the combos, but at the end of it all, I mutter under my breath “I earned that kitten”. lol

Engineer needs to be worked on. That’s a fact. Useless skills in a lot of kits etc.

Also IMO turrets should be different. They should not be dropped and stay there until picked/destroyed.

I rather have them drop for 10 seconds or so and actually make an impact on the battlefield.

Seriously then, who uses Rifle Turret for it’s dmg competitvely? Probably very few people.

If Rifle Turret would last 10s and fired a shot every 0,5 second with pierce and short bleed with 45-60s CD i would probably pick it (given AI was smarter and would hit what i am hitting currently;p). Why? Because it’s damage would be meaningful and it would have an actual impact on the battlefield for me.

Flame Turret. It could work similarly…just make it spray fire around itself in a whirling fasion (like holding #1 on flamethrower and doing 360 degree turn). Longer burn, limited duration (like 10s with again 45-60s cd).

It’s not hard to make turrets more interesting, fun and meaningful.

With regards to dungeons we kind of fulfill a non essential role, we provide CC in spades. Some people see this as a liability.

People see that we don’t provide as much damage as thiefs, nor do we provide as much utility+damage as mesmers and elementalists. We don’t bolster other classes’ attacks or defense like guardians nor can’t take as many as them like warriors can.

Over at the elementalist forums people complain that they can’t build full glass cannons like mesmers and still do dungeon runs. I built a support engi and wish I could provide as many boons and heals as an elementalist can. Over at the guardian forums they complain that they can’t have as much dps as a warrior, but my bomb engi wishes he had as much access to protection or any access to stability.

Maybe I’m bummed out because when I’ve done my best in dungeons, people still think they could have squeezed more out of the run if I had run one of my alts. As I play more of the other classes I start to realize it’s not that other classes are Op.

I posted this on another thread and wanted it to be here as well. To add to it I’d like to say that I do enjoy my engineer greatly, and I consider it to be by far the funnest class in this game. That being said, whenever I level my alts I always keep thinking that the other classes are horribly OP. Every time I play my elementalist or mesmer, I think to myself that these classes are definitely broken, because they have so many useful (read/not broken) skills and outclass my engineer so easily.

Sometimes I feel sad when I have to switch out my engineer because he’s my favorite character, but after trying out so many builds I just can’t find something as effective as what other classes have to offer.

I love the engi too, but taking a step back due to tedium. It takes too much effort to be average because of having to juice every little bit from everything. Now, I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing to have this playstyle (and please no ele comparisons, eles are ridiculously easy to play in comparison), but the outcome of playing flawless is not a very positive one and I’m always left feeling underwhelmed. I’m sure others have the complete opposite outcome with the class, but I definitely don’t like knowing that I could be a ton more effective if I put my effort into any other class.

Engineer really has a high skill cap, that’s for sure. What Engineers need is kits that have some type of specialization. For example, Grenades do all condition damage except #1 which in all kits is the most used skill. They either need to make #2 do a burn and the #1 do a bleed, then the kit has finally specialized in condition damage. If the crit damage people complain, give them a kit that actually is worth a darn like a Sniper Kit. Again Wrench kit does a lot of condition damage, make it condition based, Vulnerability is worthless.

Maybe I’m biased towards conditions because they are so unloved in this game, but that’s just me lol

I love my Engineer but I’ll have to agree on the lacking part , what engineers need is at least a speed buff to both chase your opponent or run away from them in PvP , they are a bit slow .

My dear friend, Engineers are smarter than that. Instead of running after our foes, we use Wrench Kit and magnet pull them to us, then we Prybar them in the face with a quick Blowtorch to the toosh. :-)

Don’t forget we can pull them to us when we’re downed too!

(I finally got some decent use out of downed #skills in a dungeon today. But only because we were fighting a single melee-only boss and I could wait for the #3 to come off cooldown and then interrupt followed by knockback. Course I was still down, but it helped the party.)
