Hello fellow engineers,

So I was thinking about making an engineer but since I prefer power builds over condi builds, i’m thinking that it may not be viable.

I’m not a hardcore player, I usually just do casual PvE with maybe some PvP later on.

So my question is, am I wrong in thinking that a power engineer wouldn’t be great?

Sorry if this has been asked many times before.

Thank you. o/

Engineer is still a great class. The biggest problem ppl have with the class is that it does not bring anything to raids that another class can. When it comes to condi, I am pretty sure that it is only In second place to necro because of epidemic. With power, with the meta build, u can easily get 25k-30k dps in a raid scenario. Even when not in raids, engi power dps is still pretty good. I am sure Xyonon can tell you more, and possibly give you examples.

power engi is great for casual pve

the flamethrower camping build is quite strong as long as you keep it casual and dont try to do things like solo HoT hero points or fractals or raids. its great for map completion, meta events, world bosses, farming…

You can play what you want. This is my personal build for open world chill.
-perma 25 might stack
-perma fury
-perma retal
-perma swift
-perma regen
-80-100% prot uptime
-90% quickness uptime (if you swap blat gyro for elixir U)
-60-100% stability uptime
-high defense, vitality, pretty good damage (60% of squishy dps condi build-tested) not heavy kit swap

As you can see, engi have many oportunities. I sometimes use this build in wvw with decent ressults. For raid enviroment , power bomber build offer high dps (33-34k myself) with easy rotation.

So try it with exo gear, and tell us if you like it :-)

Edit: Power engineer is great for casual pve . Explosives, firearms and tools traits with static discharge and suprise shot and nade barrage offer you one of the biggest burst dmg in the game. So you can run and one shot mobs. Gl+hf

Wahoo!

Don’t you worry about the viability of power Engi, it’s in a great spot, even for Fractals and Raids. I use power Engi against 50% of the Raid encounters and 100% in Fractals and open world.

As you are mainly looking for an open world build, I’d suggest you two slightly different ones. One for the casual open world stuff, like participating events etc, and one for (soloing) hero points.

Events and Roaming Build

The Flamethrower build is simply a must for an Engi playing open world (tiny exceptions). With this build you’ll have plenty of AoE, condi cleanses and a high uptime of all the important buffs. The hammer offers you a block and a good reflection uptime aswell as a long lasting AoE stun/daze with #5 into #3.

Don’t forget to cancel the aftercast of Elixier Gun #4 and hammer #3 by “dropping a bundle” via weapon swap button.

Hero Points Build

The most importnat thing for fighting Hero Points is breaking their defiance bar. This results into a 5sec stun and 50% increased damage during that time. Unfortunately too many ignore the bar completly …

Overcharged Shot (thx stability from Flamethrower! <3) and Blast Gyro will immediately annihilate the whole defiance bar of any not upscaled Hero Point (also works for Fractals bosses). Their cd perfectly fit the recharge time of the bar, so you will be able to proc the stun and increased damage around 30% of the duration of the fight.

Sadly, the hammer cc isn’t really fast due to hammer #5 into #3 and has a way too long CD to be a good and constant defiance bar breaker. You could use a lightning field generating traited Medic Gyro though, and swap between gyro into hammer #3 and hammer #5 into hammer #3 together with blasty. But you lose a whole lot of quickness uptime – ergo damage – this way.

I hope this was helpful. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you for this post, was very informative!

Just one question though. When it comes to levelling/before Scrapper, would you just spam Flamethrower #1 for DPS or is there more to it?

Cheers

The trait lasts for 3 seconds and recasts every 3 seconds, you could switch off between an interval and you’ll get some stability.

It really depends on the skill of the player and their play style. Leveling my last Engi I just popped XP boosters and farmed any enemy I could find, doing so I just gathered up enemiers (ideally 5+) and dropped blind fields and went ham on damage.

If you’re just completing hearts or doing map complete to level then likely burst damage will be more a focus and you might use a different build.

FT is for the most part the ‘easy’ Engi build, something that is a much lower skill cap than your optimal Engi builds that utilize multiple kits and constant swapping for ideal skill usage. FT+ HGH you can maintain a high level of might without much trouble and kill things pretty quickly, but if you were go aim more towards the meta you can blast fire fields and use higher damage traits/skills to kill even quicker.

It’s just a matter of how much effort you want to put in as to the best route for you.
