Hello everyone. I am a total newb here in Guild Wars 2 and I started off with an engineer. I did know that it was a relatively complex profession but I really liked the idea of engineer and versatility there is. I did play a lot of MMOs for years (WoW,EVE,Age of Conan-lol, Warhammer Online, Star Wars) so I was pretty sure I could face the consequences of playing a profession with a relative high skill cap up to par (at some point at least).
I do have to say that GW2 is by far the most appealing MMO I have played so far, though it is soon to come to such conclusions, but I do enjoy leveling and freedom of PvP.
So, I did try several speccs: power rifle, condition pistol/pistol and I didn’t really manage to play effectively. Please note that I play 90% sPvP. Power rifle provided steady damage and some avoidance with elixirs but up to that point. I couldn’t finish any real threats (mesmers, guardians) and ofcourse died horribly to the abomination called a Glass Cannon Thief.
Thus I tried “bunker-like” specc that so far I am looking positively at:

(copy and paste this link, as it appears a bad link in GW2 preview)
I think that this specc is relative to my playstyle and familiarity with the engineer class, which I do love. It did cross my mind on changing main chracters (going elementalist, warrior or guardian), but I am determined to play effectively as the proffession I chose first and liked the most.
Please comment on that with suggestions, tips, qq on thieves etc.
Thank you all

Why do you have Reinforced Shield (VII in inventions) when—in the build you linked—you’re running with a Rifle? Do you carry a P/S set you swap into? I imagine some people can make that work, but I’ve found it quite tedious, and trying to trait for that spreads you rather thin.
Rather than comment about the build, I’d like to hear more about how you use this build; in other words, how do you approach sPvP games with this build? Sit on a point in Flamethrower?
The build, on paper, lacks much in the way of synergy. I’m not saying that you can’t make it work, but without more information I can’t tell if you’re trolling or if your approach connects some of these free-floating dots.
I am 100% NOT trolling whatsoever, but rather trying to make out what can work well with my play style. It’s a legitimate attempt of trying to make out of sPvP and my Engineer. If my I have expressed that poorly in my post I am sorry as English is not my native language.
Seems Reinforced Shield was a mistake indeed, as I did not read it properly. I am thinking Energized Armor or Stabilized Armor. As in how I try to play is as follows:
Start with rifle and Incendiary Ammo to spread some burns. Throw Wrench is for just a bit more dmg or repair a turret from my Supply Crate. I try to play on points, slowing down people with Net Shot→Flame Thrower→Air Blast/flame Blast
From that point on it’s mainly Flamethrower skills until 50% of my health, when I use Elixir H and Tool Kit→Gear shield. I try to maximize efficiency on when I use Throw Elixir R to remove the most conditions I can.
I keep smoke vent for the most dire of moments, as I don’t have Elixir S for that kind of moment.
Box of nails and pry bar are just abit more to the dmg/poking away enemies, as it’s not a real damaging specc. From that point on it’s rinse and repeat.
