Q: Engineer's Dmg Output
First off, you’re looking at channeled abilities, which isn’t a fair solution (although yes Flamethrower is channeled, but it’s also garbage).
Second, engineers can still output more DPS, especially in the short term. It takes a lot more skill though than mashing 2 every 10 seconds (6.5s cooldown + 3.5s channel). My method is (assuming it’s something stupid enough to stand in hundred blades):
(Grenade Kit) Shrapnel Grenade, Freeze Grenade, (Swap to rifle) Throw Wrench, Grenade Barrage, Jump Shot, Blunderbuss, (Swap to toolkit) Prybar, (Swap to grenade kit) Shrapnel Grenade, (Swap to elixir gun) Elixir K, Acid Bomb, (Swap to grenade kit), Auto/shrapnel grenade for ~10 seconds, then repeat minus grenade barrage and jump shot.
You’ll be crapping out kittenloads of damage. No, seriously. You’ll out-DPS everything that isn’t a warrior.
Yes engineers damage is pathetic compared to every class in game. Yes engineers pay a “hybrid” tax on their damage and healing because apparently engineers are the only hybrid in game. Yes the reason you see12325342 threads on engineers sucking is because compared to other classes they do. Yes if you time 37 keypresses in a specific order you can do as much damage as another class who presses 2 buttons.
Yes your survivability is less, yes elementalists can bring more utility then engineers, but are not taxed for it…and yes the engineer class design makes no sense as if it was thrown together just to get the game out in time.
OP, I was thinking about this issue the other day. I have seen some good posts from theorycrafters, including Casia and others, providing average damage estimates for grenades, rifle, pistols, and FT. However, I have never seen other professions mathed head-to-head against the engineer. Regrettably, I believe that no one has yet developed a dps simulator for GW2.
OP: Good questions. Regarding our traitline, I had the highest damage pumping everything into power and crit percent, while maxing the might factor to 15, Barrage (8 grenades), I hit a warrior in sPVP, amount to 10k+ under fury (using berserker). That was using signet of air, which I think fired too. The attack power there was 4000+ at that time under might. I used rage runes too for a max crit %, similar to a HS crit thief build. it’s such a stupid combo tho that doesn’t hit nearly consistently enough to be devoted to an entire build strategy for the engineer.

We have nothing like the warrior’s 100 blades, if that is what we are looking for in terms of Engi DPS… That said, grenades in hand do awesome damage with crit procs (e.g. Burn, Sigil of Air, bleeds,) and SD can sometimes hit with Barrage too. I have dominated many thieves attempting a stealth stomp with the grenade kit, and melee players, but find that it is too slow against ranged players. That’s the price of being an AE player. Ranged and thief dps beat caster… Caster beats melee/tank. I don’t think Tool Kit or EG have anything on the highly mobile burst dps of say ranger/ele or thief that has you in their cross-hairs… thats when an exit strategy has to be made. That’s pvp (though having an exit strategy is always helpful in PVE too… But if you are running with a group having a support strategy is a lot more helpful in anycase)

Disagree. Guardian is hybrid profession as well. Engineer survivabilty is good enough, 3 seconds blocking, 3 seconds invulnerable, 3 sec invulnerable again with trait in elixirs, a lot of control.

His point with the hybrid remark was “Everyone in this game is a hybrid. Why are we the only ones getting reduced in damage for it?”

Disagree as well. In my humble opinion, only engineer and guardian can be considered hybrid profession. Maybe eles too.

Why can’t ranger be considered hybrid? or Warrior? or necro?
They all can be healer, support, damage dealer, roamer, what are they missing?
And why aren’t they taxed on their damage? (tho Necro got a damage taxe for having DS)
Server : Anvil Rock (Since Release!) [SOLO]
I can do 8k damage from my jump shot.
I agree with the OP, as soon as we can burst damage like the other classes the better off we’ll be but in order for them to fix this class so that it will work properly we’ll need a rehaul of the trait system to include buffs that traits for the ranger/thief receive, we’ll need kits to scale damage output with our gear, we’ll need our heal abilities to actually scale with our +healing properly otherwise we’ll continue to be second to everyone and that’s just not right. It’s not honest to expect 1 class to have the combat issues we were told no class would have.
How much damage do people think they can pull off with the overcharge?

If someone lets me use my netshot, jumpshot, overcharge shot grenade barrage and then flame kick, then overcharge shot, I can do a good 15k-20k or so damage in a few second the burst isn’t too bad. Just we can’t survive at all as a gc and that the burst is a few too many hits and people can usually react and dodge it.
this is strictly WvW
grenade barrage around 16k was highest
jump shot around 10k
seen blunder/battering ram do around 8k
engs in wvw vs people with low tough can easily do 25k within a matter of a few seconds with static discharge and they have a good amount of CC
We can deal spike damage fine and it’s really not that hard. The problem is that when you are all traitted up to do it, you’re an easy target. Here’s an example:
Analyze + Grenade Barrage + Surprise shot + Jump Shot + Overcharged shot
All of that with Static discharge is about 18k damage. That’s a pretty great spike, and that’s not even the full version of it. Full spike is this:
Analyze + Grenade Barrage + Surprise Shot + Jump Shot + Blunder Buss + Grenade Kit (Trait ability) + Overcharged shot
That raises it to about 23kish.
Problem is, look at your defense now. You have 0 defense coming in from traits. You have one stun breaker and one immobilize remover (Overcharged shot).
Also, snare? Good luck. If you miss your net shot, the only thing that will probably hit is surprise shot and the static discharges. That’s a decent amount of damage, but you won’t be killing anything that isn’t the glassiest of glass cannons.
Compare this to a thief, who not only has some great defense such as invisibility, multiple stun and immobilize removers, but also has even stronger burst damage with a more reliable stun/immobilize. Not to mention they can spike WAY more often than engineers.
The problem isn’t damage. It’s that when we CAN do the damage, that’s literally the only thing we can do, and other classes can do it better.
Message me any time in game.
i use battering ram over rifle turret….both abilities hit for 4-8k….f abilities has 5 sec cripple and u get another kb
