Question about grenades
The grenade kit takes skill to use as you have to judge where the enemy will be – not where they currently are. By having the grenades be manually toggled, instead of centered on a target – you allow yourself to hit multiple targets at the same time by your choice.
The developers didn’t want rifles to be the thing for engineers for a long range option. As that kind-of is the warrior thing. So they decided that grenades would be more handily as they are especially useful in WvW.
we have an engineer class that brews magic potions, uses standard military issue hand grenades (as a prime weapon), and a few gadgets designed by Data from the Goonies.
clearly they have no idea how to design a real engineer class. And that is why your grenades out range your rifle, that most of the time thinks its a shotgun…
Originally-
Single grenade
900 range
Trait to increase range to 1200
Trait to give 50% chance to throw 2 more grenades.
But…
Arenanet noticed that engineer has no 1200 range weapons, despite every class, except thief, having a weapon that worked at that range.
So, caving into pressure, they made it 2 grenades baseline, sped their speed up, added default 1200 range, and grenadier was created by fusing the old two traits together. RNG was also removed from grenadier.
Basically, the rifle had longer range at first, but thanks to arenanet seeing that they designed the engineer to have literally 0 1200 weapons, and his kits being majority melee range, they announced, to great horn tooting, that grenades were a revolutionary, 1200 range! Hoozah!
Sadly, mortar was left untouched, and is outclassed by a grenadier specced grenades in: damage, range, mobility and utility.

That’s because the rifle and shotguns were considered separate weapons. At some point in development – they decided to just merge rifles and shotguns together.
