So, my Asura has wandered the known world, shot Krait and Risen, Sons of Svanir and Dredge, and all other villains great and small.
Along the way, he’s seen turrets.
Heck, he’s a connoisseur of turrets.
Love ’em, love ’em, love ’em.
Proper Asuran cube-tech emitters (oh how I wish they were MINE).
Innovative Sylvari fixed position bio-weaponry (now that’s ‘dug in’!)
All manner of pepper-grinder styles devices that could only have come from the minds of Humans… Those clever monkeys.
Honestly, all we need are some blisteringly awesome heavy-metal turrets as imagined by the Iron Legion, and several flavors of Norn Totem-poles with concealed firing ports (Owl-themed Healing Turrets for the win- screw you Jormag!) and we would have unique turrets for each race.
I really feel this is a comparatively low development overhead improvement to give Engineers more visual punch.
Oh, and it would be just plain cool!

That would be great… if turret AI didn’t suck and they didn’t die in 10 seconds.
My studies indicate ‘racial turret’ lifespan would be increased by at least 16% just because of the waves of sheer awesome they would radiate.

I would love racial-themed Turrets. If cube turrets aren’t distinctive enough amongst themselves (how do you tell Rocket Cube from Rifle Cube without getting shot with it?), of course, could always use golems (and possibly have them trashtalk).
For the Norn Racial Turret, I could see
Healing Turret – Owl Totem
Thumper Turret – Bear Totem
Rifle Turret – Wolf Totem
Rocket Turret – Snow Leopard Totem
Net Turret – Raven Totem
The idea being that they’re still clearly mechanical contraptions, just decorated in a fashion that reflects the builder’s culture.
There’s so much good Iron Legion imagery, I have no doubt Charr Engineer turrets would be immediately recognizable even through the haze of awesome.
As to opponents needing to know a few extra looks, I don’t think it’s any more onerous that having to know what the duplicate GW1-reward pets Rangers carry around look like. There is ample precedent for multiple unique looks for a common class mechanic.
The current turrets are, theoretically, the Charr turrets, actually. The Charr are where the Engineer originated, according to Anet, and the Charr Engineer wallpaper is using at least one turret that is recognizably the Flame turret. Sure, said Charr Engineer is also using what looks like the Grenade Kit and an off-hand Pistol, but that’s beside the point.
I’d like to have racial turrets and racial backpacks. We all know none of the other races other then human or charr would be caught dead in a hobo pack. I’d suggest they revamp these and the turrets to reflect the race much like the totems were redone in WoW to reflect the race on shamans.
I would enjoy some sturdier turrets that stand out more, some are hardly visible and look like they would be destroyed by a good kick. When an engineer plops down the heavy artillery it should have more of a presence.

The phrase “heavy artillery” is subjective if said heavy artillery actually does get destroyed by a good kick.

Well, if we’re going to be that picky, nothing the engineer has access to, including the mortar elite skill, counts as heavy artillery (using the accepted standard of >155mm caliber munitions).
I would like to remind the Devs working on the Dec. 10 balancing pass that a little graphical love of this sort would go a long way…
And I’d like to remind them, and anyone proposing changes, that it’d be nice if Turrets worked properly to begin with.
