Returning Engineer after 3 years
after 3 years?
So you played like 3 months in total?
I mean, I don’t want to sound rude, but there was so much change for the class & the game so far that it would easily exceed the post-limit. Not to mention the upcoming expansion in 2 days.
How about you read up on the current state of the game yourself. The HoT website might be a good start-out for this.
Like the above post, I would seriously consider starting over fresh. Zones, pve, leveling, etc. There’s just too much to list.
Look at metabattle (website for best current builds) on ideas for both pve and pvp.
To answer the pvp question, it’s changed. Condi or DPS is where it’s at atm.
I can tell you one thing…my HGH cond enginner have not realy changed since launch it seems. I only play www and public event pve it must be said.
They renamed a few skills and tweaked here and there and moved something etc….but once that was sorted (by the help of fellow forum members) is was basically the same build i had before…just shorter range of pistol attacks:( but overall i got better at survival due to passive tweaks etc…
Hey guys I am coming back for this expansion after a 3 year break. I had afew questions on engineers in PVP.
Back in the day I would run as a tankish engineer using prybar, healing, and pistol shield tactics to run into groups and cause mayham. Can engineers still run this role? Or have they changed to a more DPS class?
And what about for PVE? Im not planning on doing too much endgame PVE, but if its good i might do alot
Sounds like you used to run Tankcat or a variant. That was a fun build while it lasted but its been dead for a long time. There’s a build thread (probably buried by now) here that you might want to look at. Also wolfineer is a good resource.

Well, HGH is a significantly stronger trait from its original version. The might is the same, but now you get 20% increased durations and 20% reduced cooldowns on all elixir skills. And HGH now works with kit-based elixir skills like Acid Bomb.
I would say it’s pretty much a mandatory trait in PvP/WvW and when soloing in PvE.

There’s been a lot of changes, but yea, you can certainly still play a similar role, although the most popular build for that uses rifle (build cited here: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Engineer_-_Soldier_Rifle)
With Scrapper coming out, there will likely be even more room to fill a tanky role in PvP. Several players in the last beta found that a hammer Scrapper build worked well and had a lot of sustain.
P.s. Welcome back. =)

Unless I was wrong (in which case ignore this post) there are no current builds, especially not Soldier Rifle, like what the OP described.
The build in questions is probably something akin to this…
