Some of you might have seen it here is what the new perplexity runes will look like.
I run them on my Engi I will still run them on my engi. There is no way any other condi rune can compete unless they make it so that they can catch up or out dps the 5 stacks on interrupt.
It’s possible that afflicted or krait have changed to a more controllable proc for their poison or bleeding applications respectively so still need to wait and see. Just based of the stream changes they are still the best runes for dps.
Chuckle People who run Perplexity runes.. hahahaha. Guess there will always be players who need a crutch <3

I’ll bite on your proposed crutch! If you run a condition build you don’t win respect points from anyone sure you can tell all your friends, the forums, and reddit you don’t run perplexity but you still run a condi build and power primary players won’t change their opinion of you.
There is no crutch from perplexity it is the best condition rune, your running a condition build there isn’t much play difference between a condi running perp and non perp. You are ok to interrupt anything with perp and non perp you rather interrupt the cleanse or heal.
If perplexity is a crutch then a condition build is a little less of a crutch but still a crutch nonetheless. You are hated by alot of primary power players it’s still hate but a little less if you don’t run perplexity.

As anything that can work with engineers, it got nerfed to oblivion. Nothing surprising.
And we should be positive, hah. Between this, AR nerf , the other (nonsensical) nerfs and sigils rework, this patch is a sad joke for engineers.
in pvp, balthazar runes will be much better for engis imo. few confusion stacks can’t beat +75% burn duration. i can see perplexity being really strong on terrormancers now that fear is goign to be an interrupt. condi warriors too. 9 confusion on interrupt = lols.
engi vs engi sure perplexity is good but get back to us after you get wasted over and over by the other classes running perplexity and tell us how great it is, you literally have no clue how bad this rune is with the new changes coming do you?

Confusion-when-hit instead of confusion-when-attacking & cooldown increases 10 seconds (66%).
Confusion-on-interrupt cooldown increases 7 seconds (87.5%) and base duration decreased 20%.
You and I use the phrase “pretty harsh” quite differently.
That’s absolutely still powerful enough to wrap a whole build around.

its probably still viable, and maybe even borderline good. but it wont be optimal.

The current 4 piece is good because you could get a opener proc. The revised version will be much farther out of your control and has a long icd. Still the 6th piece wins vs any other set.
If your 6 piece procs for 600 damage your other rune sets conditions need to somehow find a 600 Dps total increase in that same time frame.
Right now and even post patch if the 4 or 6 piece never proc scavenging, undead, noble, torment(if you get a proc), krait(w/proc),orrian(w/proc) will all out Dps perplexity but if the 6 procs perp wins. This assuming those runes procs don’t allow for a similar 6 piece post update.
4 damage condition @ 1600 condi damage will always be better then 3 at the same damage. Probably even 3 at 1800 won’t be better the 4 at 1600.
Possible contenders are rune of torment, scavenging, krait, orrian we have to see how they changed their procs. If your running off hand pistol then it really doesn’t matter much if you run something else. You really just get benefit from the 4. The duration will probably be fixed.

this doesn’t answer the question of try fighting every other class when this patch hits with are getting a nerf there is no chance an engineer is going to be able to compete as a condition bursting class anymore, we will be much to vulnerable to necros warriors rangers mesmers and thiefs, now do all the math you like but condition specs are going to be doing a whole lot more damage and engineers with the weakest condition removal just won’t be able to handle it with out being baby sitted by a support guardian, now this is all based around spvp not much will change in wvw, luckily we are getting good buffs to other builds but after this patch say bye to condition bursting engineers In spvp I think.

thats about 4k damage guaranteed off the burn proc. thats about 4 skill uses against perplex confusion. personally, i disengage in 1~4 ticks against perplex (depends on how the fights going). noobs will spam skills and really make perplexity worth using over balth, but tbh they arent the people you need the supereffectiveness against.
like yeah i agree its a really good idea to diversify your damage condis, but dat burn proc does as much damage as you could ever expect to get out of perplexity against an alert player… and in addition, constantly proccing burns with IP, heal proc, rocket kick, and p/p (or bombs, idk, pick 3-4 of them) means they arent gonna have 4 cleanses so your burns will stick. so thats why i think perplex will definitely not be clearly optimal.

Completely agree. If they don’t change that 6-set bonus in sPvP I will probably use it just to keep up with everyone else. I’ve never liked the rune set, but at some point you gotta use what’s best I suppose.
@ ukuni I was referencing WvW my apologies there should have clarified. I agree other condi spec will be strong in spvp but one of the things that engi has going for it over a necro is it’s mobility ar is going to weaken engi vs condi spec post patch. Necro’s will definitely leave no doubt that they are the condition king with this rune.

I think you’re missing a major factor here. If the alert player is stopping their actions because they see they have confusion, then that’s a huge plus for confusion vs burn.

i dont just stop, i disengage and attempt to reset. its not necessarily free hits for the perplex guy against an opponent, cuz youd have to be able to chase. so itll be better in spvp where fleeing from the point your on is actually gonna give something up, but i think its gonna be a lot less reliable damage than say balth runes because it depends on your opponents actions.
we arent a confusion class naturally. we have confusion, and some of its strong, but without perplex runes engis dont go around sayin oh im a confusion build. so perplex runes dont have much synergy. but burning? we only need 2 skills/trait to basically perma burn a target, and we can have access to like 5. bleeds? our bleeds are so prevalent that they even do significant damage in power builds. augmenting one of those 2 condis with a rune set is gonna do a lot more for us than confusion.
I’m not sure if the 4th ability change is that much of a nerf. It’ll trigger when you get hit, and when they hit you, chances are high they’ll use another skill shortly after. It’ll be easier to make it deal damage vs. players I think.

Yea I understand what you mean I just don’t like many runes with on heal effects except for a few. That was the first thing I noticed from playing engi is that burns make up a large part of the dps.
