Rifles
The rifle was originally intended to be a shotgun. They kept the skills but changed the look of the weapon from shotgun to rifle (some rifles still look like shotguns). Basically we can all blame warriors (the only other rifle wielding class) because if it wasn’t for them, they wouldn’t have changed our shotgun to a rifle.
Personally, I use this:

I’m sorry please don’t beat me.
I had a quite decent topic abaut this whole thing, araund 10k view’s. And the ideas ware good, how to implement something that lets Enginers use a more “ranged” rifle , but still keep the current one to.
Things like : Sniper kit and , switching the weapon switches it to the same weapon but with different skillset ( the engineer mods the weapon) and things like that, but in the end it was closed down because some moron started to argue and troll.
I still dont see a reson, why cant Enginers get an option to play “long range direct dd” with there main weapon. I am sure the 80% of Engineers (or would to be enginers) hate shields, or pistols to lack of dual shoot. Or kits at all, since Weapons skins look totally mind blowing, and rifle is the only item that can be really altered and seen. So they use mostly ONLY that.
Besides the fact that Anet Clearl states that Enginer is Long range intended class, with support and flexibility. …
But in fact i had to reroll to warr, to play rifler class.
The engineer version of a rifle really doesn’t make much sense, maybe someday down the road they’ll make the current skillset into a shotgun kit (with a cool looking double barreled shotgun) and fix the rifle to be a… rifle.

I wish I read this. Kinda sad you had to reroll war to use a rifle.
This class is far from long range, its only long range option is grenades and that is only really useful for WvW zergs and PvE.
The vast majority of the time this class spends in close range because thats where almost all of our abilities and synergies are.
Do I have a problem with this?
No not really.
Would I like an option for ranged combat aside from grenade spam?
Yes please.
Do I think that hip firing a rifle or even a shotgun looks kitten
Yes.
I’d really like to see just a diffirence between those two. Like a shortbow and a longbow, there can be a rifle and a shotgun!
I personally would love it if they changed the animations, I don’t really care if a engi has a shotgun or rifle but using a rifle as a shotgun seems so awkward. Especially since we’re shooting at 1200 range or something? Just give warrior animations, except for blunderbuss maybe.
Yea, or more shotgun skins but that would be more of a pain in the a.
i would love to see a shotgun added…. maybe rework the rifle abilities, keep #2-#5 for the shotgun, but id like to see the auto-attack turn into a high damage bleed front cone attack, much like guardian staff#1…
eh????

I agree because at the moment the rifle is a hybrid rifle/shotgun. Hip fire has rifle range but the rest of the skills are shotgun range.
I would like to see the auto attack reflect that of a shotgun.
Saying that though, I am really not a fan of #5, it might be due to the fact I live in aus and have a higher ping than normal but this skill feels extremely clunky. Its borderline useless in PvP because of how easy it is to dodge due to the delayed damage and also because its an effective 1s stun on you.
Greatswords all are big powerful melee weapons. Why does the mesmer fire long range lasers from it? The point is, weapons behave differently between differently between classes. They would never build the engineer’s rifle the same way as the warriors, and they wouldn’t make a separate kit to be nearly identical to another classes’ skills. That’s just how the game works. If grenades aren’t a good enough range option and you’d like to have some other form of strong range skills, then I suggest running a ranger, staff ele, or greatsword mesmer.

I love evrything about the rifle. The only change that wouldn’t ruin the entire profession, whole game (ok I’m exaggerating – but only a bit) is making the 1 ability much less range like 600 but with a great deal more damage. It’s a shotgun, if you want a rifle roll a warrior. Actually its not even a shotgun, just like engineer pistols aren’t really pistols. These are weapons that you have invented, tinkered with. Just because they have a standard name doesn’t mean you should view them as standard weapons. They fit the engineer class so well right now, with the net, the jump, the explosions, the multifunctionality. Seriously how can you want just a boring old rifle and want to play an engineer at the same time?

If i want a viable ranged option play another class? cool feedback.
edit: Yes grenades are wonderful against stationary targets ie pve and sieges but anything else? No
Also, who says rifle implementation has to be boring like warrior?

Being excellent in PvE and large WvW fights covers a lot of the fighting you’ll be doing anyways. The only place you claim grenades don’t work are in sPvP and small WvW battles. In PvP, 90% of fighting is done over control points well within 1200 and often even 900 range. In small WvW skirmishes you may have a point, but it is much more difficult for an enemy to keep you at max range then it is for you to close the gap.

Stop talking about the Rifle from the engineer srsly stop it. Now!
Do never ever ever dare to talk about the rifle again or i will come over to your house and beat you down with my rytlock puppy.
I’ve come to like the close range nature of the engineer rife, mostly for it’s control effects. In WvW I use the rifled barrels trait to give me 1200 range with the auto attack, which really helps in an area where distance is important. In sPVP however, I don’t see the range limitations at all.
I suppose what a lot of people don’t know about is how long range the turrets are if you have them traited up. I’ve only done a few experiments, but the rifle turret fires further than 1200 feet, and the rocket turret can practically snipe targets that aren’t even visible yet. One of my favorite tactics for defending towers in WvWvW is to put a rocket turret on the furthest end of the wall and just let it snipe enemies from afar. It lets me go and get supplies since any attacking force will destroy that turret before proceeding, alerting me of an offense.
In PvE the grenade kit is arguably one of the most awesome things in the entire game. It is only in select sPVP and WvW circumstances where the rifle’s close range is a detriment to how engineers are played.
I’m fine with being a primarily close ranged class, sure I would like a long ranged dps weapon but its not a priority at all. Yeah grenades are good in PvE and sieges but they are pretty bad in all other circumstances, most notably open field WvW.
My main problem is it looks stupid beyond belief to hipfire a rifle (or shotgun for that matter). Also it seems to be Anet can’t make up their mind whether its a rifle or a shotgun, its a shotgun why do the shots penetrate, why does it have a trait that makes it one of the longest range weapons in the game, i mean seriously now I can auto attack at 1500 range? Sweet.
Either make it a proper shotgun or make it a rifle and give us a shotgun kit, idc which.
