So i am looking about the Utilities as i am beginning to try a new build, I really like the Tool belt part of the skill (Rocket Kick) a nice little AoE Burning for upto like 10 seconds (when i am finished) but i am having a hard time with Rocket Boot utility slot part of the skill.

Anyone got any tips to making actually useful in combat? or is it pretty much a defensive skill? I think i would prefer it if that just like Ele Burning Speed in that it leaves a trail of burning behind you as you “jump” forward so that it could also be used in a offensive fashion, Just like Burning Speed can be used for movement as well as attacking people in combat.

What do you guys think? I mean the burning trail would make sense since it is rocket boots after all.

Would you guys be happy or annoyed/upset if say the Blast finisher was removed for a burning trail to be added in its place?

The utility portion is mostly used as a defensive/offensive mobility tool. It’s good for chasing people down and getting out of spots. The fact that it also removes movement impairing effects makes it especially valuable in those areas. It’s analogous to a memser’s blink or an elementalist’s lightning flash, and it’s the only skill we have that really offers that level of micro-mobility.

You can also use it just to establish position during the fight instead of escaping or chasing (i.e. jumping over a warrior so they have to chase after you while you then turn around and shoot them).

Technically, it does do an attack, but the skill isn’t designed to be used for that.

As for the blast finisher, that is much, much, much more valuable than a little flame trail that will likely do minimal damage to non-AI opponents. The blast finisher can give you stealth (which is potent with the long leap), extra healing, AoE swiftness, and lots of other things. One of my favourite combos is to use the regenerating mist, which is the healing turret toolbelt skill, and then rocket boot to get the water blast for quick healing. Comes in handy quite often.

Okay, i will give it more of a “blast” finisher look in rather then something for actually attacking like Burning Speed is. The damage part isnt exactly that great so adding a little something maybe a similar effect to Rocket Kick but have it so that it lasts like 2seconds or something just to help it along.

Something else that would be nice, if you have a target have it so that it actually hits them so many times i have used it to try and get into a fight only to end up going past the target :/

I absolutely love it as a utility skill. It’s amazing the variety of things you can do with it (I play mostly WvW).

Quick escape / remove movement effects.
Catch up / chase down enemies
Simple movement increase for getting around faster.
Blast finisher – This is huge, and I hope they never change it. A pretty much instant blast finisher on a short cooldown is awesome with all the fields we can create. I use bomb kit…putting down fire field as often as I can. Not only do you get the dmg and burning from the initial blast, you also get three stacks of might. Smoke bomb plus rocket boots = awesome escape. It’s also very useful for splashing heals, etc.

Sometimes I’ll even set the big ol’ bomb first, then fire bomb. The fire bomb goes off, then big ol’ bomb blasts it for 3 stacks of might, then you use rocket boots and end up with six stacks of might. At the same time, people are taking crazy damage from the explosions and burning, and I come tearing back in with my rifle immobilize and start again. Fun fun.

I am building a Condition build using Pistol and Shield. The main problem i have is that if i target someone more often then not it goes past them. Going to try using it as a blast finisher and see how i perform

We have better. Use it with Slick Shoes, that’s a hoot!

The blast finisher is quirky as well, for those that don’t know how it works it takes the field that you launch from but does not execute it until you land. It’s quite fun to ninja stealth onto unsuspecting teammates this way, or land a heal across a boss fight room.

It’s largely a defensive tool. I use it with Cloaking Device trait to make the most out of repositioning under stealth. With the upcoming patch to elixir s the combo with toss elixir s will turn the enemy decision to immobilize into a 10 second guessing game in which direction I’m already out of range in…I can already taste the tears…

The ability isn’t designed to be used at a target, it’s more similar to other profession’s blink abilities. Basically, rocket boots will send you flying in the direction you are facing. So if you are facing away from your opponent, it will launch you away from them even if you’ve targeted them. If you find shooting past them to be a problem, you might just have to get used to the distance that it launches you. It will launch you a bit further if you have a speed increase on, like swiftness.

Also, if your being launched way past them, that probably means they’re within shooting range already, so there shouldn’t be any need to chase them down with rocket boots. It’s when they’re out of range and running away that you can use it to catch up to them. You aren’t going to want to use the utility as some kind of attack because you’ll probably waste it for a moment where you need it.

Also, the rocket boots ability is absurdly good at breaking target. If someone is running at you or you get snared/focused, popping rocket boots and shooting past them will confuse them for a few seconds and give you some breathing room (while they try to find you again).

I´ve tried this and it is very fun. And if I´m not mistaken you can use rocket boots toolbelt skills for extra speedboost too.
