Love the new name!

Much better than Forge imo.
Forge just did not sound right, ‘forgeR’ maybe, but not Forge.
It’s like calling the engineer spec ‘Stove’.

I’m seriously at a loss over people complaining about the name. . . it’s kittening bizarre that someone would sit here and write like 15 paragraphs over the NAME. Functionality is, and will always be the only issue. YOU can call yourself, and your character anything you want. But if the actual functionality of the new mechanics is garbage that needs to be addressed.

So they introduce an energy bar (as new mechanism) that have an effect only with new utilities… seem legit… or not.

I hope the druid won’t have such a cheap trick because as it stand (and from our limited information) this energy bar is a very cheap trick…

Honestly, the name scrapper does sound like it was an out of the box alternative to the forge due to negative feedback…

It looks awesome from first view, not gonna lie, ive got a kitten! Been trying to decide on an alt besides my necro, and this just sealed the deal.

Would have preferred Forge better. Connotates creation, appropriate to making drones and such.
Scapper, as pointed out, is pretty cool for its survivalist and melee-focused themes. I’ll forgive the added Charr connotation.

But maybe something for the Asura instead?

Makes sense, story-wise. Engineers in the Maguuma Jungle scrapping parts from the airships, therefore the flying gizmos.

I remember reading something about engis (scrapper) getting something similar to adrenaline bar. Maybe that’s a fuel bar for our drones?

i really hope well get a hammer aoe whirl finisher… this would be awesome for fire fields and condi builds (nothing stacks burning faster) and vuln stacking with explosions and the lightning field

That’s exactly what I thought. Forge as an English word sounds very ‘off’ for a profession’s name, it would be ’ a Forge’ or ‘Forger’. I’m not going crazy for grammar, just as a native speaker it sounds very strange to me.

That’s the speculation, and that they will be AI based in their passive state and use fuel in their active state (their toolbelt skill or some other ability). At any rate, we’ll find out just how useful they’ll be on Friday!

It is the name of a bar in a menu. Who the heck cares. You are still an engineer.

The only referance we have to “fuel” is the french article:

drone have a fuel bar and explode when depleted

It looks more like the drones degenerate health over time, in other words, their healthbars acts as a fuel bars. We might get invulnerable drones thanks to that, but I don’t count on it.

Scrapper has 2 main connotations/denotations. First is in regards to trash, mainly metal but salvaging that stuff. Often this goes not just to the salvaging but also creating something out of the salvaged materials. I think that fits the engineer quite well, it may be a bit more crude than many would like, but I can’t help but think of http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169491/

The other meaning would be a fighter, or more brawler. Someone who isn’t afraid to use some cheap shots and will never stop never give up and will find a way to win. I think that fits with the motif that we’re getting with this. We’re going to be beating people with a hammer, throwing some “cheap shots” as we CC them, and we’ll be relentless as we pursue them with the rocket charge.

So overall we get to be this brutal fighter and we’re going to be piecing together little gyroscopic drones. I really can’t think of a name that would fit this better. I would love to get “forge” later on maybe with a mace or torch with a very burning theme, but that’s not what we got, we got a Scrapper in every sense of the word.

I can totally see gyros being invulnerable and the Fuel Bar being some sort of energy type mechanic like the Revenant has. Aren’t any of you familiar with the glowy orb things of Revenant?

Grenth, Scrapper sounds so terrible. I thought their naming couldn’t get any worse than Dragonhunter, but kitten was I wrong. Forge was soo much better. I’d much rather be the embodiment of fire and physical power than just someone who collects scrap -_-

Will my new scrapper be able to use old elite skills with new weapon? IE Morter/Hammer engineer ::trembles:: will he? tell me.. will he/!?

lol come on, a “forger” has nothing to do with smithing, a forger is someone who makes false documents. There is literally only one definition. It has zero relations with anything even in the game. The proper term would be “Forgemaster” or “Forgesmith”

Whatever the fuel mechanic is could make for some pretty engaging gameplay with the Gyros. If they’re less “fire and forget” type drones and more “they’re active only as long as you upkeep enough fuel” that could be pretty interesting and less AI based. It would be great to get concrete info on this fuel mechanic tomorrow and not have to wait until Friday.

Whenever I think about the Gyros I get hungry. I’m hungry.

i did read it and its sorta kinda stupid….cause since when does convict labour become something to look up to? You dun goofd hence you do it and there is nothing glorios about that. A charr scrapper dun goofd big time to become that, cause charr take their military stuff pretty darn serios. Where is the honor in that?
Sure.. some elite spec names are (depending on who you ask) stupid…like the dragon hunter, we all sorta hunt dragons afterall. But how does beeing punished for beeing a nuisance to an army inspires other races?

I think the scrapper seems pretty cool at first glance. I’m not sure how the gyros will work yet and love the hammer skills they have mentioned so far but after looking at the helm on the asura engi and with the rocket boots this gives me that feeling that our character has become star lord from guardians of the galaxy lol anyone else notice this?

At this point I’m convinced you’re just trolling lol. There’s no way people take the name of a skill tree this seriously, even if you are a role player. Them naming the Specialization line -Scrapper- means what to your character? Nothing. You taking that line has no significant meaning on your role played character. You can still be a “Centurion-Mega-Avatar of Knightly Magnificence-Brightest Jewel of Tyria” from the Iron Legion.

That’s exactly what I thought. Forge as an English word sounds very ‘off’ for a profession’s name, it would be ’ a Forge’ or ‘Forger’. I’m not going crazy for grammar, just as a native speaker it sounds very strange to me.

Threadly reminder that a FORGER is someone who falsifies documents and paperwork and not someone who uses a forge.

And a Forge is a furnace. So neither of those names is really fitting for a profession.

Scrapper Name

I think both Forge and Scrapper are ok as names.

However, Scrapper clearly has a way more shiny and chrome ring to it, which in my book is a lovely thing.

Charr Scrappers
I can undestand why some people doesn’t like the name being linked to Charr pariahs. But the social rejects are never worse than the society that despises them, specially not in fiction narrative, so I dont think why a creative and rebellious scrapper shouldn’t be as valid a character to use, story and lore wise, as a stiff and legal centurion.

Don’t believe me? Well, just think about the other group the Charr militaristic society utterly despises. Yes, Gladiums. They are also treated as scum, walking shames without a place in society ,and seen as failures. Yet some of the greatest improvements on Charr culture and politics during history have come from these types: nonconformist outcasts who break and bend rules to get greater goals than those in the limited vision of the legions.

My point? Playing with a shunned, disowned, wayward and obstinate Charr scrapper would be AWESOME.

Scrapper Gameplay
While we know really little about the real mechanics of the new spec, I think for me it will be an all or nothing thing. If the spec is good, it will really buff what I already do, making my gamestyle (full cc, close to mid range, prone to tank-evade and kite a lot) really fun and awesome. If the spec is not, it will be just another dissapointing, useless traitline for me.

I must confess I don’t have a very optimistic view of mr. Calmon-Huang vision, since he was also who made some of the announcements on the Tempest, and (IIRC) the one that showed that bunch of "TBD"s on the first “new trait system” presentation.

He spoke about Engie being a “ranged” proffession, wich, if whe take the term at face value, is true, but, If we look around and use just a bit of common sense is clearly false (Throwing grenades in your face is hardly long distance combat).

He also said FT and Bombs are “niche” builds (Like saying they aren’t relevant at all), wich is somewhat true, but also isn’t the complete story: right now FT and Bombs are subpar kits, wich most people use for specific set ups and nothing more, because they have been clumsily nerfed (bombs) or never properly balanced (FT). They are niche because Anet has not made enough to put all the kits and weapons in line.

So when I say I like what I’m seeing with the Hammer, I say it with HUGE suspicion and with any hype strongly repressed. And when I say I really fear the "gyro’s"AI, I MEAN it. I don’t want to see yet another collection of waste skills, like turrets right now.

As a charr i detest it. Beeing a scrapper (and its indeed originating from the charr scrappers) is a punishment for beeing consistently insubordinate, unreliable, or troublesome and there is zero respect for a scrapper in the legions. A scrapper is seen as an untrustworthy troublemaker…and last time i checked i was an iron legion centurio and commander of the pact aswell high ranked member of an order and sort of a big deal all arround. Beeing a scrapper is basically the opposide of that and its quite a big punch under the belt line to be fully honest.

Someone on Reddit has something real interesting to say about it from a lore perspective. I’m not into RP, but I found this to be a good point of view and if this came from Anet and not just the author’s own ideas that’s a pretty dynamic way to evolve the lore in game.

Basically words change meaning over time and Scrapper could be evolving from a negative term to a more positive one. This happens in real life all the time. Read here (if you can read French you may be able to get more context from the article itself):

A charr scrapper dun goofd big time to become that, cause charr take their military stuff pretty darn serios. Where is the honor in that?
Sure.. some elite spec names are (depending on who you ask) stupid…like the dragon hunter, we all sorta hunt dragons afterall. But how does beeing punished for beeing a nuisance to an army inspires other races?

At this point I’m convinced you’re just trolling lol. There’s no way people take the name of a skill tree this seriously, even if you are a role player. Them naming the Specialization line -Scrapper- means what to your character? Nothing. You taking that line has no significant meaning on your role played character. You can still be a “Centurion-Mega-Avatar of Knightly Magnificence-Brightest Jewel of Tyria” from the Iron Legion.

A scrap collector…yea… wouldnt want anything that says “yeap i surely do have advanced my craft” Instead of advancing the materials and technology(maybe even on the level of pact technology cause that would make sence given that the pact joined forces and sorta use now stuff designed with elements from all races) the engineer works with to do his stuff he starts using junk and names himself after one of the lowest ranks of the charr army? Yay? Hype? Hell no. You got no idea how often the nope meter broke on this one for me.

Why not Besieger? Forgemaster? Machinist? Pioneer? Constructor? Demolisher? Metallurgist like hinted in the PS with taimi? Mechanic? Handyman? Inventor? Anything thats not so degrading and in my opinion just a kick into the gears.

there are two definitions. One I can understand your argument against, you want something more dignified, that’s cool, personally I like it and I think it fits well. The back-alley genius that’s going to take some leftover junk from some fight and build little flying gyroscopic drones.

But, the other definition is exactly what we’re getting with this new trait line. A more in your face fighter.

I really don’t think there is anything that fits what we’re getting better.

And a tempest is a storm, yet it exists. And is one of the better profession names as well.

Scrapper, eh? Meh. It has a nice double-meaning (scrapper as in a close-up fighter, and scrapper as in someone who creates machines from scraps), so it certainly fits. But it doesn’t really have any cool “zing” to it. Just sounds kind of bland. Not a terrible name, but nor is it great.

I actually really liked Forge. For all the hate the name got, I always thought it sounded pretty awesome. Pictured my Engineer standing on a mountain, hammer in hand, proclaiming “I am the Forge. I create the weapons of war. Challenge my skills if you dare.” while surrounded by her army of drones.

As for the combat mechanics… uh… not much to comment on, really. Actual information was pretty darn scarce in this preview. 3 Hammer skills, one specific Drone, and… that’s it. So I can’t really say much about them. The hammer skills sound pretty cool I suppose, though I’m a bit surprised its lightning-based instead of fire given what the auto attack string looked like (unless its been changed). Triple Leap finisher sounds fun, and more lightning fields are nice (always thought Engie should have at least one).

Purge Drone… could go either way, honestly. Curing conditions sounds nice at face value, but how good it is will depend on the specifics. How often, how many conditions, whether it will “waste” shots on people who don’t have conditions (like Bow of Truth does), ect.

Drones do look really awesome, I must say. Just aesthetically.

Pretty disappointed there was no mention of any sort of profession mechanic changes. Hopefully that was just something they’re saving for the official blogpost / POI and it doesn’t mean that Scrapper just doesn’t have one, since that’s kind of one of the core principals of Elite Specs (or at least that’s what we’ve been told).
