Scrapper PVE 10/23
For raids I’m planning on tanking with this: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQFASlUUhSsYtWwPLQ7FLsFFdwP8JPYIWiBg4GVF3IA-TxRBABSr+DS7PQtyvmfAAAcBAcWHQaKBJFAM7qA-e
If I’m not tanking, I’ll probably not run Scrapper.
Depends heavily on the situation. Condi dps and power dps won’t be changing at all imo. But for serious content and the jungle I think sinister or zerk, evt again an assassins mix will be more viable. Those are my humble guesses:
Condi dps for easy content aka dungeons or fotm <50:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQJAqalUUhSsYfWwWLQ7FLpFFYJuiHw3GGANw4PmGFJA-TBSCABPqEEalfJ/AAsa9BAsBQZ9AOr+TFnAASBsoyK-e
Power dps for easy content aka dungeons or fotm <50:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQFAUlUUhSsYtWwdLQ7FL5FFYCGAV13+9fB44HmElIA-ThBBABYt/o8DgLAQe6AC4BAUp6PnpEUUAiF-e
Serious content build wich I’m most likely gonna run with:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQFASlUUhSsYfWwdLQ7FLjIF9TelfJ4scLBw3psKtCA-TBCBAB1s/Qlq/cmSQsUeAwFAIPdAlpELgHAgoAEL-e
But nothing for sure. I first want to test the new gyros again. I believe some of them will be in my skillbar from time to time. Scrapper will probably swap utilities way more often than engi does right now. I’m excited to try new stuff and combinations. Let’s see what scrapper will give us…

This looks like a sweet set-up for a tanking and doing some sweet DPS! I also love the use of the Undead runes. Though, why not bring P/P instead? You can always swap FT for TK, if you want blocks.

Hey man.
I think you could use any weapon, really. I just thought hammer worked best with tanking with the 20 cd block and the triple leap finisher. I know Dom actually tanked with P/S, but he was also running Inventions.

I’ll be running this in pvp:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQFASncoCFpitoCupC0ehF2ii+3H+lHMEPxAQsjmibE-TJRBABxXGoiLAwW7PAwDAAA
and something like this in pve:

Worked in beta, and will probably work live too.
My take on healer / tank
Pay attention to the protection uptime

“Pure” tank
While toughness is almost maxed out ( >4k with adaptive armor), it comes with 100% crit chance (after warri banner + ferocity), and 3.7k power. If ranger spotter is in the raid group, you can switch out even more gear for cavalier. And if raids turn out to be in night time, obviously switch over to sigil of night instead of bloodlust.
While it doesn’t heal as much passively as the former build, it’s still capable of spike heals with hammer leaps & blast finishers

In general I think it’s reasonable to take gyros with us into fractals/raids. From what I’ve read it seems the raid-boss AI is mostly disregarding minion-AI, and the AoE-hate doesn’t seem so bad. And since their cd’s are now down to 20sec flat, regardless when they got destroyed, the are way more reliable now.
Dunno how good the fixes to their movement turn out, but lets hope for the best.
I don’t think Scrapper goes well with Explosives/Firearms. I wasn’t able to make a build that did decent damage using that in BWE3. If those of you thinking that is your build are going purely on theorycrafting and didn’t get to use it, don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t turn out as good as you think it might.
The best that I found was Firearms/Alchemy with Scrapper. It’s weird because obviously Explosives is a DPS line and Alchemy is not, but Alchemy definitely added more to damage for me.
Jade Quarry
For PvE even a scrapper still uses nades and needs the vuln and dmg on explosions. And noone with a sane mind will abandon the by far best damage modifier: modified ammunition.

The only thing you really lose out taking Scrapper over Tools is the 10% damage buff with full endurance and Takedown Round. It works just fine with Explosives and Firearms, because nothing in Tools really synergizes with them either.
That said, unless you plan on tanking, I don’t think you should take Scrapper.

Even then, you want to balance support and DPS. The scrapper tanks from the BWE still used nade for significant DPS.

Pretty much.
If you have no need for adaptive armor, then baseline Engineer is a much better choice. Higher DPS potential.

Doubt it’s particularly good, but I’m so tired of grenades at this point that I want to try something different.

I agree, you’re not going to out damage the current meta for power Engi. Which makes sense, because Scrapper is not a damage spec.
I’m responding in the context of the thread, which to me seems like it’s asking how to get the most damage out of the Scrapper. From my experience in BWE3 replacing Explosives with Alchemy gave me a lot more damage due to the boon spam. It was counterintuitive, but it worked and I remember some other people commenting that they found the same.
I see some Firearms/Explosives/Scrapper builds being posted that may be theorycrafted to be the best DPS for Scrapper (just replace Tools with Scrapper right?) but it doesn’t seem to play out that way. If those posting the builds did not have the chance to try them they may want to try another option when they see that build doesn’t do very much damage. This was just my experience that seemed to be corroborated by some other people during BWE3.

I did play BWE3 and tried serval builds with the scrapper. The gyros were so bad, none of them were viable in the current meta dps wise, only for some niches… Therefore we only could judge the traits and weapon skills.
Replacing tools with scrapper is only a dps loss if you ignore vulnerability (or if it’s capped by short fights with ele lightning storm) and if you can keep up the full endurance bar for the 10% damage modifier in tools.
I have to admit, keeping up the full endurance bar in fractals or the jungle so far is pure wishful thinking. Without a very high uptime of that trait, tools hasn’t really much to offer dps wise, only trough lower CDs on the toolbelts itself and QoL with streamlined kits.
The scrapper traitline on the other hand offers a strong main hand weapon with much more vulnerability and damage, aswell as a 10% damage modifier for it. Besides that the trait “expert examination” causes additional vulnerability (and weakness) with dazes and stuns wich leads to higher passive damage.
I’d say there is nothing wrong with a straight forward tools-to-scrapper build. But in the end, if the content becomes really that challenging, we will adapt eventually. Yet for theorycrafting, I’d say scrapper will outdamage tools everywhere but in dungeons where you simply don’t have to dodge at all.

I used your build for PVE and it worked like a charm I loved it. Its probably what im going to roll out with.

How are you getting the speed in this that triggers both your vigor boost and your sustain trait in scrapper??

Correct. Whether you’re tanking in Sinister or Rabid, you will always have good crit chance for good HAE uptime resulting in permanent swiftness and—by extension—permanent vigor from Invigorating Speed and healing from Rapid Regeneration. My build is kind of like a franken baby of the P/P HGH build I’m using in PvP and the currently-meta Sinister engineer put together with a few tweaks.
A few things will probably be changed in the coming weeks, like whether to take protection or more super speed in that first Scrapper trait slot, or if to take Mod Ammo over Incendiary Powder, but I’m pretty happy with what I have right now and will run something very similar to that on raid launch day (if I do end up needing to tank). Truthfully I only had a couple hours with the raid boss, so I never got beyond the second phase, so it’s hard to say if this is better or worse than Dom’s build for the Vale Guardian and for future bosses.
Overall, Firearms is honestly the best tree to pair with Scrapper, as High Caliber and No Scope are two really strong damage modifiers that greatly benefit from using the hammer. And while Juggernaut is still undertuned, if they can balance it correctly with Mass Momentum that will also be an option down the road. There’s also always Modified Ammo, so in the long run I imagine Scrapper+Firearms will be ideal for most bosses.

Boon spam from what? Hidden Flask?
It doesn’t give you any damage bonus boons you won’t already have. Revenants give perma fury around them, and might has always been relatively saturated in PvE. Comps will get a bit weird to compensate for 10 players versus only 5, but I don’t think it’s necessary for engineers to go into Alchemy unless they plan on tanking to get Invigorating Speed and Iron Blooded.
No need to reinvent the wheel here, guys. Sinister engineer will still be tops, and you need to run good (not “fun”) builds to be effective in raids. In a month or so after the raid wing has been completed by a good percentage of organized guilds, maybe we can start messing around with Scrapper DPS, but I think you guys do yourself a disservice to even consider it right now.

It’s not optimal and it won’t be meta, but it’s hardly a disservice. It’s a new spec, the first one in 3 years. Of course people are going to use it on day 1 even if it’s not as good. This thread is about finding the best way to use it, not finding the best way to Engineer.
My boon spam comment was based on the interpretation of this being a generic open world PVE thread. It’s not a raid thread. In which case you’re not counting optimal group setups, buffs from other professions, etc. You’re not getting Fury from a Revenant, and there’s no Warrior to cap your might.
It sounds like you want to optimize things (and I do too) but I just don’t think that’s the context of this thread. Rifle Zerk will still be highest direct damage, Sinister P/P will still be highest condi. None of that is relevant to this thread.
