Engineer is the only profession I haven’t made yet, and I’d like to try it out (also need to finish that persky 82/83 Hint Completion achievement). So far, my 80’s are Necromancer, Ranger, and Thief. I mainly do WvW, but a side of decent PvE and dungeons couldn’t hurt. In WvW I’m typically going to be zerging and roaming, so is the Engineer good in those regards? And last but not least: is the profession fun?

Thanks in advance.

Super fun to play. You can spend months tweaking a build, so engineer may feel weak for a while until you start getting your build down. But after that, you’ll be behind the wheel of the most flexible and highest skill cap profession.

Build diversity and options with this class is so wide I can not honestly tell you it cannot do something. In general it is my go to profession beside roaming. I still roam with it none the less.

Fun is completely up to you but if you like cheese builds your only option is perplexity runes and you could do that on a thief. It is very different from the 3 classes you currently have leveled. IMHO take it into spvp for a day and try a basic build (HGH, Static Discharge, etc.) to get a feel for the class.

I have a mesmer, guardian, warrior and engineer at 80 and I always end up back on the engi. It’s so fun to play.

Plus as someone mentioned the build diversity is awesome, I find that I never have enough gold to keep up with the new gear I want to buy to try new stuff.

I’m pretty much purely WvW and still find it the most rewarding to play with skills to fit almost any situation.

I crafted mine to 80 so can’t comment on the leveling experience though.

Yes it’s an amazingly FUN class.

Personally… It depends on what I want to do at that moment as far as what I’m doing…

PvE…
When I’m feeling lazy Guard, when I’m not, Mes
Gathering/champ farming I go to my Thief

WvW/sPvP…

Eng almost 100% of the time

This isn’t to say Eng’s arn’t good in PvE (they can be amazing), but this is just what I almost always use. My others are kinda storage-ish alts right now to prep for the 500 armorsmithing and are full of cloth stuffs (lol).

Do it and dont give up early, engi is a late bloomer. Try some builds an find your way to play, the possibility is there.

only negative Points are:

ascended weapon damage effects NOT the kits
Backpacks get overritten by the Kitpacks if you switch to it.
Many Leatherarmor fits not the style of an engi
Bugs to fix but that is in every class
it need time to master this class (this must not be a negative point)
not so good in GvG Fight no stability (this may change with the October Update)

The learning curve is steep but its very rewarding, so like Haralin said stick with it.

The fact that Ascended Weapons don’t effect kits is a big one. However Devs did state something about that at one point so I’m crossing my fingers that we get an increase.

I believe they’re changing backpack views next patch, maybe.

There is still the Magitech and Aetherblade armor skins on the TP if you want to spend gems on some nice engineer looks.

If you’re starting out I would suggest taking 20 in Tools for Speedy Kits and the ability to switch into Static Discharge when working a heart. Rifle w/ Bombs, Toolkit and Rifle Turret should make leveling pretty quick. Stay away from Grenades till lvl 60. Other than that experiment with everything you can. I have around 300 Hours on my Engi and I feel I’m just scratching the surface.

A year after I got my first engi to 80 I leveled another one to 80 just to have a different look.
