Should I use my 80 boost on engineer?
it depends on your playstyle and what skills your like and planning a build out can help so you can test it

“Mentoring engineers / mesmers and showing you what you can do with your fantastic class!
Just pm me for my advice! Always eager to help!”
Beginning at 80 or at 1, you’ll have to learn the proffession anyway.
IMO, engie is simply great, although it can be a little slow to get to the good stuff if you level it normally. However, ther are other proffs that suffer from this much more, like the Rev or (For many people) the Mesmer.
Since you know you want to play Engie, the real questions are:
Do you enjoy leveling characters?
Do you prefer to learn with every tool available from the start?
Do you intend to level another proff too?
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

Thanks guys for the feedback. To answer some of your questions, I played a guardian at launch but then took a break when HoT came out. I played a ranger heavily in GW 1 so I’m burned out on bows and traps. I’d really like to get into the scrapper profession as soon as possible, but wasn’t sure if I needed a solid foundation in targeting with grenades and bombs first.
You’ll get the same foundation on that by playing on lower levels or by playing with 80. But with lower levels you will not have all the build options available for a time, and the Scrapper Spec will certainly be farther than with an 80 toon.
My advice will be:
- Use the 80 boost on the engie
- Play personal story, boss train and silverwastes events to practice your aim with grenades (I LOATH them, but most engies see them as mandatory).
- Play HoT to get the Scrapper.
- Practice and go into harder content.

If you can get comfortable with the controls then I would say boost an Engineer, but if you can’t get used to a kit heavy build and swapping kits every few seconds then I would stay away. It does take a while to get used to and doing PvP will help your PvE gameplay, but it can be a lot of fun if you stick with it.
Personally I found all the kit swapping to be significantly smoother when I got my G600 mouse (I have my utility slots bound there). Otherwise make use of QE, R, ZXC etc.
The only problem with the Engineer is that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.
Look at it this way – it will take you a while to learn the ins and outs of engineer whether you take it level it slowly or use the boost. The question is whether or not you want to start your learning with all the skills and traits unlocked.
The classes I leveled slowly and took through the story mode are the ones that I know the best – all the skills, all the traits, lots of different builds, etc. A large part of that is of course just the sheer amount of time spent playing as you level, but also because you will encounter a lot of novel situations where you have limited skills and traits, and you have to look over everything and decide for yourself what you think is best. Learning slowly as opposed to just jumping into being able to use all the best skills and traits definitely has value.
That said, leveling “conventionally” takes a long kitten time and can get reeeeeeally boring and if you really have limited time you may not want to make a commitment to spend the next X days doing nothing but hearts and story mode. When I came back from a long break I made a new character and did the story again because I had largely forgotten what happened and it was interesting to me, but if you don’t like the story you can always just level 80 boost at any time. You’ll build up enough tomes to level future characters anyway, so don’t worry about that.
Basically just do whatever you find to be the most fun. But if you jump to level 80, don’t run away from engineer when you can’t play it perfectly at first =P
Good points Dinosaurs. Also not having the Scrapper too soon could make you value it more when you finally get it. So is a timing problem: Hammer Time now, or Hammer Time later?
The only problem with the Engineer is that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.
Can I quote you in my signature, Hawks?

and welcome to the best profession in the game =)
Hi all,
I’ve been testing several classes out in the Silverwastes area but so far I’m loving the engineer the most. However, one of my guildies recommended not boosting my engie since it can be a difficult class to learn. What do you guys think? I have limited time and am afraid I’ll just fizzle out if I have to level another character.
Well I can speak from my experience. Ive played all the classes since launch. I’ve mained necro for wvw roaming and pve. Till a few months ago, I found all the classes kinda boring but engineer. There’s something about the crazy skill rotation and skill aspects that make it one of the most fun classes out there. I say go for it.
