I’ve been playing my engi a lot over the past few weeks since I’ve hit level 80 and I’m having a blast roaming around with him. Coming from guardian, it’s a nice change of pace. I’ve decided to jump straight into triple kits, but I’m having a hard time deciding on the best 3 for me. I like nades for the 1500 range and ability to cleave on downed, bombs for the fields and BoB, elixir gun for that extra blast and gap closer and defensive skills, and tool kit for that utility, but I can NOT decide on which combo to use for solo roaming.

I’ve narrowed downed to using grenades for ranged pressure. I’d like a bit of insight on what you guys prefer for 3-kit roaming. I really love bombs, but I feel vulnerable giving up that gap closer with EG and block/cripple on TK. Then again, I feel like I could get more out of blasting the bomb fields for certain situations. Thanks for any help.

I want to shed some light on this topic for you.I am guessing you must want to play condition spec?

Then go with Pistol/Shield, as they provides best way to counter and gives additional survivability. More times than not, having just a shield does not make up for loss of Tool Kit. Not only does Toolkit gives you survivability, which is essential for solo roaming, it is also a battle engager. Pull and Prybar is awesome. As a solo roamer, you should be the one to start the fight, not your opponent. secondly, I get that you want ranged weapons, but as an engineer, there are certain situations when you actually need that extra stealth. smoke field takes care of that. For instance, if you were to be caught up by more than one opponent, it is really hard to shake them off with grenades than with Bombs. Smoke field with Shield number 4 knockback is an easy 2 second of stealth. It seems minor, but since an Engineer has perma swiftness, the distance covered is well worth it. Thirdly, Elixir gun should be the last slot. Not only does it provide decent healing, it is a gap closer, which is much needed in 1 vs X fights. So I am not sure if I helped you. But here is my opinion. Hope you consider it.

Bomb/TK/rocket boots is better imo. The blast on rocket boots combined with HT or smokebomb are great

Thanks man. Yeah, I’m running p/s, and I’m fine with gearing and traits, I’d just love to hear suggestions on what people prefer.

Nade/Tk/Rocket boots is my favorite set up. Nade/tk/bomb for dueling (will still tend to use Rocket Boots in a lot of duels, I usually don’t need bombs. Nade+Bomb in the same build is realllly OP 1v1).

Rocket boots is pretty much mandatory for roaming, unless you are VERY self away with bomb kit and know when to blast smoke to get away.

Tbh, when I see engi’s who run bombs as their main damage kit, I laugh a little because they have to be in melee to do any damage.

Bro being melee as main damage is fine, as long as you have enough CC and mobility. I mean hammer warriors have been doing for a long time. I would agree though that bomb kit as your only kit leaves you a little lacking. Although using it with slick shoes is good for a laugh

I think Tool Kit is an amazing kit for PvP/WvW (as it sounds like you’re most into).

You get an AOE cripple, great for kiting. A spike damage Pry Bar that also adds Confusion. Good block. Magnet is the best, pulling people off walls or just bringing them in to set up a spike combo. Works well followed by Pry Bar + Barrage + any other big hitting skills you have equipped.

I like Bomb/TK/EG – triple kit that still gives you the blast finisher that RB would with EG#4 instead (and it deals damage), and all the defense of EG & TK. Plus, you’ve got control with Glue Bomb, Pistol/Shield offhand, Magnet, and Elixir F.
