In tools trait you can select “static discharge”. Is this considered an AOE? I believe it bounces from target to nearby targets.

If so, does that mean that the Static Discharge builds will now be nerfed?

It is considered AOE I think? Anyway, Anet stated that some AOE is going to get nerfed not all. And for compensation single target skills will get buffed.

It’s a bounce, not an aoe, I don’t think they’re the same.

The dev’s were very vague about the whole aoe nerfing business… so it’s simply too soon to tell.

To answer your question: no one knows, maybe not even the devs yet…

1st: I think the devs are checking the DoT AoEs to be nerfed, so dumb warriors stop complaining they die at gates (WvW), either way they might be thinking of nerfing it just in WvW.

2nd: Static discharge is not AoE IMO, because there’s no field, no circle, it’s simply a projectile that ricochets.

3rd: if they ARE actually going to nerf it, then they MUST fix it first, because there’s like 5 skills that make it work correctly: the rifle turret’s toolbelt, throw wrench, net shot from net turret, the utility goggles’ toolbelt and the ram… and none of these is actually USEFUL by itself, it NEEDS the static discharge to actually be viable, any other skill (especially throws) WILL result into firing the ground so… first FIX then I’ll accept a nerf.

It’s a bounce, not an aoe, I don’t think they’re the same.

When using p/p, what about #3 (static shot). Will this be considered a “AOE” attack?

All we can do is guess at this point, but I don’t think Engineers will be really hit too badly if at all. Remember the Engineer has already been nerfed in the AoE department, possibly to where they want them. They also want 5 to 6 viable builds to be viable, and we are a bit on the low side of that. They want to do that by bringing up all the useless junk.

Bouncing doesn’t appear to be something they are too concerned with. They are mostly concerned with AoE’s that do too much damage, too much radius, and too much frequency. None of our stuff really hits all those categories, and arguably doesn’t even hit two. Gotta also keep in mind that any melee’ish stuff tends to be naturally AoE, and it wouldn’t appear they want to nerf all of that.

Static discharge doesn’t deal a lot of damage as an AoE ability. It’s great, but it’s not really a lot of damage unless combined with the primary target getting smacked by a toolbelt skill. So all the other targets don’t take much.

So nah, I don’t see a nerf being possible.

People mix up AoE with ricochet/bounce attacks.

SD, Static Shot, Mesmer GS#2, thief pistol trait, EG#2 and so on are bounce attacks, it has nothing to do with AoE.

AoE = Area of effect. The nerf will most likely only hit abilities that are groundtarget abilities. Mostly the pulsing kind, like Ranger LB#5, meteor shower from elementalists and such. They have long durations and deal alot of damage.

I think most other spells that attack more than one target will be unaffected, like necro AoE for instance.

But with meteor shower and the longbow skill you can cast them then use other skills while they still deal damage. Those are probably the things that will change.

Actually, bounces might be EXACTLY what the devs mean, if you are to take their stated reasoning as truthful (a stretch, I know).

The devs said that the problem was that some AoE was doing more single-target damage than single-target abilities could do.

Now, what happens to a target that has a very damaging bounce hit him, hit something else then bounce back? Double damage. That sound like any engineer ability we know? Something beginning with the word “Static” and ending in “Discharge”?

ANet devs are those dumb warriors. Buffing the already OP Warriors because they die on gates. Who knows, that could be the same reason why they nerfed grenades.

Anet Dev playing Warrior: Crap that, there’s too many red circles in the gate because of those Grenade Engineers! Let’s decrease their population even more!

Still not an AoE attacks. Bounce does not mean AoE, bounce is bounce.

Bounce attacks are based around a set damage than can be achieved with optimal bouncing i.e hitting only 2 targets so one or both get double hit (depends on number of bounces). Real AoE deals a massive amount of damage after they are cast (no bleeds does not count since they have a fixed stack value and cap at 5 players).

LB5 and Meteor Shower deals damage for a period of time after they finish casting, meaning the ranger/mentalist can deal other damage while the AoE deals damage. Big difference from other spells.

There is no real way they can nerf bleed, burn or poison AoEs, since they dont deal damage nearly as powerful as that of ranger or mentalist AoE.

Bouncing hits are multiple target skills. not quite the same as AoE in game terms.

Granted when talking with players, AoE is often used interchangeably. Single target vs AOE. We are simply, simplifying.

What the dev meant, who knows? he may have meant it specifically as area attacks, or he may have meant it as the more euphemism for aoe and multi-hit. anything not single target.

Not all AoE’s are ground targeted persistent aoe sneakyervin.
explosive shot, drakes claw, etc.

True there are other types of AoE, but at that point we get into all of them, like symbols for guardians, whirling wrath, 100B, mind wrack, berserker and so on, key abilities of all those classes.

I’m just curious which AoEs they plan on changing.
