Hey all fellow engineers I’ve recently (I know sad) noticed that depending on screen position static discharge can actually be aimed up instead of instantly hitting the ground. My issue is why was this implemented?
I’ve never heard of a pvp’r that has screen flat ( or upwards) and not looking down at character for the obvious reason.
So should static discharge be fixed to always aim flat/parallel to the ground instead of straight into it? For that matter now that I think of it pistol auto attack does the same thing.
Would this make sd o.p if fixed (for far better variety) or stay the same for that very reason?
Experimental Puff, Thelonious Twig, Purple Fleck
Static Discharge should always fire at your target, or your cursor if no target.
Problem solved.

This. I mean cmon ANet.. seriously how hard is it to fix this a year after the game is released. bleh.
I would like the cursor aim idea as well.
As for elixirs I would like to c if the throw HITS for SD to aim for target not straight ahead (into ground). Defeats the purpose of SD if over half the toolbelts ( more like nearly all of them) are un-targetable.
I believe all projectile skills go towards the center of the screen if there is no target.
I remember bursting the flame blast over enemies heads when they were sitting on the walls in WvW

The funny part is elixir toss Static Discharge actually works under water very well
If u toss your elixir H with an enemy targeted, the Static Discharge heads in that direction, and if you press to detonate it, (most underwater elixirs require secondary detonation) it’ll have a secondary Static Discharge. It seems like Static Discharge doesn’t work consistently well with non-targetable skills so If I use Healing Turret’s or Flamethrower’s Toolbelt, Skill, I’d at least like that the Static Discharge not be a gamble on hitting.
That said, I have no idea why SD is so lazily programmed. Or why you have manual-only cast on grenades on land but have auto-attack on grenade skills under water (but that could just be a personal preference as opposed to an issue). And seeing the patch notes, I see yet again no real effort put into engineers to fix basic issues. It’s like Arenanet perma-cast Torment on the entire class.
I’d at least like to see a “hold on, we actually are working to fix Engineer bugs” from Arenanet, but I really haven’t seen anything besides them answering questions about cosmetic changes.

Haha that’s great underwater combat works better for SD than above ground…
Seriously though what about the question on OP?
Would giving sd more variety make it op or just viable?
I mean this in a pvp setting not pve.

Power Engineers are already a rare breed given how much more risk a Rifle engineer undertakes going in to burst someone compared to condition Grenades or Bombs. Fixing SD procs to actually fire at targeted foe would not be OP at all – the proc already occurs – it is just a matter of actually making the proc useful instead of firing at the ground.
One solution I have found as a semi-workaround is using Right mouse to Camera look until the proc when triggered will fly parallel to the ground. This will lock your aim for skillshots much better and actually allows for use of the Pistol 1 without a target. (Why you are auto-attacking with Pistol 1 is besides the point)
After that, use Left mouse to camera look back to a comfortable elevation.
There is a problem with this and that is, every time you use Right mouse to swing the camera around, the aim is relocked to the ground and your SD procs and skillshots go haywire again. If you can quickly realign it though, the world is your oyster.
Yea I am aware you can move camera but NO other skill requires this unless you count throwing grenades behind you. Even that that’s only for visibility not aiming. If they could fix SD it would add lots of variety.
