[Suggestion] rifle rework
In my opinion Rifle#1 and #5 should be buffed. #1 with increased damage of 20% or so, and 5 either with longer leap range or CC condition (such as cripple or chill for second or two) at the beginning of animation.
For PvE it will never be competitive with granade/bomb kit and for WvW it could use a buff.
I agree that rifle needs some work. The current iteration is good, but one of the main reason we are required to use kits (or turrets…) is that our weapon skills are insufficient on their own (and also that the other utilities are not nearly as good). And changes to make the rifle more high-tech is welcome by me. Engineer rifle, turrets and hobosacks act and/or look so low tech it is not even funny.
I enjoy the mobility of jump shot though. I don’t think I can let go of that. And the 6 second stealth is VERY strong, almost seems overpowered with the other buffs you mentioned. However, I really like the change to #4, and changing the animations to better suit the vast majority of rifle skins…especially the precursor and legendary.

=> #4 is an annoying skill because you cannot control what is behind you…perse…it gives more control
=> #3 is to make up for the lack of mobility – thus, high uptime to allow for a more high tech camo skin style play – one of the Tom Clancy games uses camo skin really well, kinda like that
The way that the rifle is made at the moment is small AOE control with little single target – my idea is that though it has it will give easy bursting with high control/ forcing enemies out of areas
I guess im a minority in the fact that I love rifle how it is. I love hipshot, I dont wanna be a sniper.

shrug I like it how it is. Not sure why we get these suggestions once in awhile that want to completely rework something about the Engi (to your credit a couple of the skills are the same just… better in every way? lol).
Maybe it’s just semantics, but intro this as a new weapon, or new elite, or something and I would be more on board. Completely changing what is honestly quite a good weapon doesn’t really sit well with me. Especially when it’s stems from simply the name of the weapon being “rifle” not “shotgun”. Who cares what weapon class it falls into, it’s clearly a shotgun! I don’t like seeing these threads that pop up once in awhile “the rifle is too much like a shotgun, change it!”.
Honestly the worst part is just that there aren’t many shotgun type skins, most are closer to sniper rifles. Including the legendary q_q. WTB shotgun themed legendary!

I don’t believe the skills need to be reworked, I like the abilities. Despite that though I agree that it could use just a little love. Burst from #3-#5 is good, but other than that your basic attack is tiny. A simple 10-15% bump for Hip Shot is enough to put it on a level playing field.
I’m fine with my burst being in melee but helping for long-range would be nice. Abilities other than #1 shouldn’t be touched, they are in a good place.
If there is any way to get a remake I’d want Hip Shot to become more ‘shotgun’ like. Shots already pierce, adding a little cone to the shots as well at the cost of range would be awesome.
Combine Rifled Barrels and Hair Trigger, then change Modified Ammunition to also change the Rifle’s autoattack in to the cone idea at the cost of range in addition to the effect for all damage.

But… I… wha??? O_O You want the rifle to help you in long range, but you want to take the only ranged damage from it and making it shorter?
(btw you can load a shotgun with “slug” rounds that are not buckshot, but a solid chunk of lead that acts much like a bullet, this is what Hip Shot essentially is)
We already have a cone like attack that rewards being close to your enemies. It’s called Blunderbuss. Hip Shot is a very good balance to the rest of the weapon. It may not be the best auto attack in the game (it’s not bad) but at least it gives us something to do at 1000+ range. Changing it into Blunderbuss 2.0 would only hurt the rifle. We have so many other better options for close combat auto attacks.

So much this, I have been searching and searching for a rifle skin that looks closer to a shotty, because I like the current mid to close range feeling to playing engi (exception nades, but even them I use in close most of the time any how)

Rifle is fine! It’s very strong! The auto attack is very strong! The immobilize is very strong! The knockback is instant and hard to predict! The leap and Blunderbuss are all very hard hitting! Rifle is fine!

No, but seriously I find Rifle to be in a relatively nice place.
And there needs to be some decent Legendary Shot Gun skins. The Projectile could even resemble a buck shot.
Personally, I’d like to see more weapon/armor skins that look “realistic”. As in, they should appear as though they might actually have a legitimate function in a fantasy world.
There are tons of weapons/armor skins that look like a bunch of flowers or a Super Nintendo duck hunt gun. I’m not saying that there is not a player base out there that cherishes those weapon skins, I’m just saying there are enough of these impractical shards of crystal weapons to please those players. I would like to see things that remotely make sense as weapons/armor.
Particularly since my profession is an Engineer that employs genius devices and concoctions to conquer oppositions. I (personally) don’t want to try to explain to myself how I am firing multiple projectiles out of a slab of frozen ice mysteriously shaped like a crude rifle.
That’s just my 0.02$

Honestly, I’ve always thought that the rifle auto should be shortened to 600 range, given increased damage the closer you are to the target (an over all damage increase for Hip Shot, it can use the Blunderbuss firing blast animation, and possibly made to hit up to 3 targets), and that Rifle should be turned into a pseudo melee weapon ala shotgun style combat. The weapon already lends itself to this style with Blunderbuss, Overcharged Shot (under 400 range), and Jump Shot requiring you be within melee range to get the full effect, and Net Shot compliments this amazingly by allowing you to immobilize someone to set up Jump Shot to Blunderbuss combos. Tool Kit is a poor substitute for a close combat weapon as it does less damage and even less vuln stacking (with adept level trait) than bombs.
Rifle isn’t even our long range weapon. Were forced to take grenade kit for that, regardless of build. If Rifle was suppose to be our long range weapon, then having an auto attack with all of our other abilities on the weapon at less than 500 range is useless.
Over all, this change, in my mind, would allow rifle to become a stand alone weapon that we could make builds around, instead of being constantly forced into taking kits just to function normally like the other classes.
