I’m starting to get into tpvp with my guild, and am looking for a class & build that will allow me to rotate between multiple points for point defense and have a good impact on team fights, without being incredibly squishy.

I used to play pvp on my Engi a long time ago, so I am pretty familiar with the overall class mechanics. I’ve tested out a handful of different builds, and I think the closest one I have found to my desired play style is a Celestial rifle build I found on Ostricheggs’ twitch channel:

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQFAUlUUp+qlcxELseNCbBNqxI6N2xq85DEgkC-TJxHwADeAAa2fAwFAoYZAA

This build gives me the mobility I need to rotate points and good AoE from grenades, but it feels like there is no damage. Sure, I can hang out on the outskirts of the fight and chuck grenades or mix it up in melee with toolkit, but it never feels like I am making a significant impact on the fights. Additionally, I am having a hard time in any 1v1 encounter.

Am I missing something here? Can anyone point me to videos of this type of build in action, possibly with some explanation of how it is used in pvp? Or is there a different build that would be better suited to the playstyle I described above?

For better or worse, engineers rely on incendiary powder and skillshots for a large percentage of their damage in the most common builds.

While IP appears passive and easy to apply at first glance, in reality, it’s not so simple. If you throw grenades into a teamfight, you’re just as likely to apply burning to a clone or bone minion as an actual player. There’s not necessarily any good way to control IP in every situation, but it’s one reason why it can sometimes feel like we have no damage output.

The other reason is that our damage scales with how many skills we land, obviously. If you throw shrapnel grenades at a thief and score a perfect hit (all three grenades), he will melt almost immediately. If you are off by a bit, and only hit with one of the grenades, it will deal 1/3 of the damage.

But even if you play perfectly, you won’t be pumping out deeps with a celestial build. Your job would probably be to 1v1 on homepoint for a bit when necessary, push far if necessary, and set up coordinated burst in teamfights using magnet, net shot, and overcharged shot.

Hello frands! Vee Wee here #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

That celestial rifle build is my build and I am glad you picked it! With the Celestial Amulet you don’t have the burst of the full power build or the condition output of a full condi build! What you do have is really good sustained damage through hybrid power and condition damage! You can also stack a fair amount of might on yourself through Battle Sigil and Strength Runes! If you have a lot of might you can get a large burst on your target with this combo! Magnet > Prybar > Overcharged Shot > Throw Wrench > Net Shot > Grenade Barrage > Blunderbuss

If you want to see how I play it, head to http://www.twitch.tv/Livskis! I’ve been playing that build for a week now! Wahoo!

Wahoo! Bye frands!

Before the feature pack, it was a bigger time investment to reach rank 80 so very few people reached it. Also, the game has leaderboards. “#1” and “first rank 80” are both objectively achievable things. I don’t know if Vee Wee actually qualifies for either statement (out of a lack of knowledge, not a lack of belief in Vee Wee), but your phrasing suggests that it’s impossible to claim either of them, which is untrue.

“Worlds first rank 80” was not achieved. Nobody was rank 80 pre-patch, and the patch pushed it so many, many people hit rank 80 at the same time.

It’s probably that Celestial amulet that’s keeping you from feeling like your getting much done. If you want to pack more punch go ahead and toss in a Berzerker’s amulet instead. Celestial is fairly popular lately in PvP team ques and this heavier “bunker” meta we’re seeing at higher levels but unless you’re facing the top 100 regularly I wouldn’t worry too much about that.

As for 1v1’s try opening the fight from stealth with toss Elixir S. Toolkit>Magnet>Prybar to put early pressure on them, then Net Shot > Nade Barrage > Jumpshot > Blunderbuss. You can add the Throw Wrench in there anywhere. It’s fairly simple and easy way to take the initiative, which is likely easier than trying to out counter-skill your way through the fights like most experienced pvp engi’s might go about it – such a Ostrich – which allows them to use more balanced or attrition based stats/styles.

Was there a particular class match up or situation you were having trouble with?

Other useful tips for the build:
- Tool kit is great for kiting away from enemies/losing fights: Gear Shield, Box of Nails
- Toss S is great for denying stomps on your teammates, and/or rezzing them. Same goes for Stomping enemies.
- Magnet + Net Shot can create easy chances to focus enemies down as a team and create early numbers advantages in team fight situations.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Elixir gun would be another solid choice, and you might consider it instead of elixir S. It really depends on your play style and your team, but either should work out.

Shrapnel might also not be the strongest choice just due to the RNG nature of it, but hopefully you’ll be able to get enough mileage out of it with the grenades. I wouldn’t overlook empowering adrenaline or accelerant-packed turrets though, even if you only have the one turret.

As for incendiary powder, a trick you can use to get it to proc is to use a sigil of intelligence. Since incendiary powder will always proc on a crit (when it’s off cooldown) and the sigil of intelligence guarantees a crit, you can effectively guarantee your incendiary powder proc when you want it. This does mean you have to give up another one of your sigil though, but you may be able to ditch the sigil of energy by adjusting your strategy so you rely on dodging less. However, the celestial amulet does provide a decent amount of precision, so you would probably be ok without resorting to that.

I haven’t really tried out this build in a tPvP setting, but I generally don’t see it being used to handle 1v1s or such. It’s always struck me as a “team build” in that in maximizes its potential when used with the team. I guess I’d really have to try it out for awhile to get a good feel for it.

I played the build at and vs the top of the ladder in tpvp during the last few days. Its actually really good for 1v1’s or even 1v2s. The combination of great sustain, the wombo combos and the condi pressure makes it a really difficult thing for most professions. to deal with.

Its great to push ppl off points aswell. due to knockbacks you have at your disposal. So youre basicly a decap engi with the abbilitie to kill ppl really fast aswell.

To the OP: You need to work the builds strengths. Its a hybrid so it doesnt suffice to lob grenades on points, a pure condi build would be better in that case. Or it will never be as good as a pure power build in terms of direct damage. Its dificult to deal with for people since you can condi ppl up and “stunnlock” them while the condis are ticking away.

Its that combination that gives prety much everyone trouble.

Yes! That celestial rifle build is a lot of fun!

I’ve been running it with bombs and elixir gun rather than toolkit/S. Very mobile with EG 4 and rifle 5, plus a fire field and a couple of blasts to synergize with those runes of strength.

Wahoo frands! I played my first team and solo arena game today in over a week! My leaderboard rank went up and we all know the leaderboards show everybody’s true skill! Didn’t read all the answers in this thread, but….

This is exactly the build I run. I picked it up after I watching some engineer in spvp. Only difference is that I run elixir gun instead of elixir S. Didn’t know it was one of the top builds out there, since I haven’t played engineer in a while.. Either way, I disagree with you. I love this build and it MELTS targets, literally.. Especially 1v1. On several occasions I’ve killed 1v2 thieves. It may be a little squishy, that’s my only concern, but it has enough sustain and you shouldn’t die 1v1.. =/ Also don’t forget to use the rifle (something I usually forget cus of the kit swapping and cus I’m used to P/S).. You can do really high burst damage with it duo to celestial trinket and might stacks.
