EDIT: Added my group version for convenience: Group-oriented TANKCAT build Thanks to KirinDave for the talent suggestion!

In groups, I replace elixir B with U for TURBO-DUNKING enemies or TURBO-REZZING allies. This allows my group to recover from many BAD HAPPENSTANCES.

The goal is to pop Elixir B and pry bar the enemy right before they pop quickness or whatever else their burst skills are. They will completely annihilate themselves due to confusion and retaliation.

This build will completely dominate any burst spec class. I am serious.

Here is a handy list of how you will annihilate classes in order of easiest to hardest to make submit to your kitten.

Thieves have overinflated egos and see you as a tasty meal. They will stealth and try to backstab you. If only they knew what they were getting themselves into. You will block it with gear shield or static shield and prybar them in the face when they appear. They will attack you for a moment and realize they lost 3/4 of their hp from retaliation and confusion. They will try to run, and you will Magnet them back into your gentle arms. They will then be able to do nothing but bend over before your mighty kitten.

Warriors will pop quickness and try to hundred blades you. They’ll get stunned by Static Shield. You will laugh and prybar them in the face. If you get bullrushed first, you’ll elixir S and prybar them in the face WHILE TINY. HOW DEGRADING. If they don’t, you will save elixir S for when they go down, so you can stomp them WHILE TINY. HOW DEGRADING.

Rangers will pop quickness and try to shortbow machine gun you. You will pop magnetic shield and cackle madly as they lose thousands of their hp and, in a panic, start DODGING THEIR OWN ARROWS. Dance, kitten, DANCE! You will proceed to prybar them in the face. You will then toy with them for but a moment before slam dunking them, Shaq style.

Cookie-cutter burst Engineers are the most delicious and satisfying of all. You will pull them to you, give their kitten one good smack, and then block their overcharge shot. You will laugh and prybar their face while they’re prone. They will try in a panic to unload their arsenal of burst on you. You will block all of it. At this point they will either do:

A) Bend over and accept their fate.
B) ALT+F4 and uninstall the game.
C) Respec to TANKCAT engineer.

WARNING: If you encounter another TANKCAT engineer, you will high five them and move on. If you two duel, the servers will crash.

Elementalists that are staff specced will kneel immediately before your dominance. Dagger elementalists will vainly try to set up their lightning/fire burst combo. You will block it all and prybar them in the face. They will scream in agony as you fire many small poison darts into their posterior, and then scream in frustration as you static shot and blind them right before they finish channeling Churning Earth. Another victim to your kitten.

Mesmers that do not have a 1h sword equipped at all will graciously present themselves as an offering to your kitten. Mesmers with a sword must not be underestimated. You will block as they set up their illusionary leap/blurred frenzy combo, or else you will take sizable (read: 1/10th of your massive HP pool) damage. While they are blurred frenzying, you will drop box of nails near them, and as soon as they end it, you will prybar them in the face. You will cripple the mesmer as much as possible with wrench throw and #1. You must learn to respond to a mesmer that uses arcane thievery to strip your boons and make you cripple yourself. You will run around feeding yourself medkits while tiny. The mesmer will eventually buckle under the power of your superior kitten and submit.

Necromancers will try to immobilize you in their wells. You will block and move out of it, and proceed to prybar them in the face. They will strip your retaliation and you will feel very naked. You will both engage in a duel of the titans for a short while, before reaching a mutual agreement to seek other prey. You two both have bigger fish to fry. If for some reason the fight DOES goes on, drop supply crate on top of them and quickly go fix yourself a cup of coffee or hot cocoa. It’s going to take a while.

Guardians are the only ones higher than TANKCAT engineers on the food chain. They are a true terror to behold. The greatsword Guardian will teleport on top of you and begin slicing your unmentionables. You will static shield, and attempt to static shot his binding blades. You will move in with Toolkit and prybar him in the face, and then immediately gear shield out of his whirling wrath. The sky will spark with fierce energies and the ground will tremble from the epic battle that is taking place. All other classes will die instantly from the shockwaves being emitted from the mighty Guardian and TANKCAT engineer colliding. With quick reflexes, some luck, and several minutes of fighting, you will emerge victorious. You will then have to recover for many days in a hospital, and you will have to visit a therapist for your newly developed post-traumatic stress disorder.

WARNING: You must NEVER fight a tank guardian, as the intense energies will make Tyria implode. When you see a X/Shield guardian, you will tip your hat and move on. Respect your superior. He will respect you as his understudy.

I hope you enjoyed the preview of what you’ll accomplish with this build. And remember, you don’t have to be a cat to be a TANKCAT!

Will post videos whenever I have a computer decent enough to record.

Now get out there and prybar some faces! MEOW

This reminds me of Trollbards from Rift, only much more effective. You are forcing other classes to kill themselves. Genuis. In a glass cannon metagame you hit the sweetspot. But according to your guide its weakness is Bunkers. Bunkers are very common in TPvP as point holders. Obvious flaw aside, this is why I play engiee. We can do anything.

Loved the post made me laugh and this does seem like a strong build, though I still like mine more . Only thing that immediately sticks out to me is it seems very 1v1ish but I will try it out.

IMO you would benefit so much more by dropping self regulating defense, medkit, and elixir b for and picking up kit refinement, elixir gun (for super elixir basically), and the healing turret. You would have a permanent light field (retaliation, regeneration) and much greater healing as well. You would lose 3 condition heals from elixir b and self regulating defense but you would gain 2 condition heals each on 10 sec cool down from super elixir.

You would also hit a little less harder but IMO the added survivability is well worth it. If you don’t like that I honestly would still drop self regulating defense for backpack regenerator. With the dolyak runes the its you have a constant regeneration ticking for 160. That alone can cancel out bleeds and what not and will do so much more for you depending how often you tend to stay in tool kit.

Whenever I feel like swapping up for healing, this is what i do for the most part, and I approve this. :>

When I play with a group I replace Elixir B with Elixir U. This allows me to turbo-rez allies or turbo-dunk enemies, and the fields are always great, too!

I’m still playing with runes, so far my favorites are Earth and Dolyak, but Forge and Mercy both might be something i’ll play with in the future. Thanks for the insight :>

Superior rune of the fighter is also something possibly to look at if you want to maintain some of your damage. Would basically net you 2 stacks of constant might through super elixir and more through your other healing skills

This is actually a great group build also. The thing is, with his gear setup and build, he’s nearly unkillable. In our small 5-7 man groups, his entire job is running around turbo dunking or turbo rezzing allies, and body blocking shots. I can’t count how many times he’s rezzed someone important in the middle of 20 people while taking a ridiculous amount of hits.

I agree also through the constant cripples and what not It would definitely be a menace in group battle. But super elixir with kit refinement is currently much to valuable to pass up when it comes group fight in my opinion

But I do know the power that is elixir u as well. You can do some amazing things with it, I used it exclusively before they nerfed the pistol 1 to the point of no return. Great for escaping, combo field boons and conditions (blind spam ), stomping, damage boost, condition heal, the list goes on lol

Would this build benefit from dropping 10 from Alchemy and putting it into Tools for Armor Mod in exchange for Cleaning Formula 409?

If your main goal is to burn people as they break themselves against your retaliation, then having retaliation pop up as they start their attack reactively could be great. Given the 75% mark elixir B and glass cannon’s love of high crit, you might not even need Elixir B on your bar in that case, instead opting for R to give you more dodges, stunbreak, and revival or an Elixir C to help shore up your performance against condition builds.

Tried this out a bit this morning. I was impressed with the survivability of this build. I used to run a rifle/crit build and try to stay out of the fray. It’s a lot of fun running right in and causing chaos. I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped, but I attribute that to adjusting to a new build and my having never used pistol/shield before.

What do you all think about Sigil of Superior Hydromancy for this build?

I haven’t tried this yet, but I think it’s a great choice. In WvWvW I personally use Sigil of Restoration because I find myself slam dunking a lot of people, but Hydromancy would be really good for small group pvp. I actually never considered this, thanks for bringing it up :>

This is something worth giving a try, as 10% more cooldown reduction on toolbelt skills is always tasty to begin with. For small group pvp I am actually seriously considering this as I’ll be able to reflect damage while keeping Elixir U on my bar, which gives the build both 1v1 and group-oriented love. For roaming alone, I think i’ll keep Elixir B and Cleaning Formula 409, as I’m simply addicted to the dependable fury and condition removals that they give me. Thanks for this idea!

He says solider in the first post. It’s tempting to put condition damage on this build, but the idea is that most of the damage will come from other glass cannons not understanding what’s happening and smashing their face on your god-like retaliating physique.

I bet there is a condition-heavy damage variant for WvW, which would help a lot against other condition-based builds, which on paper stand to dominate the build as written because they don’t have to break their teeth trying to grind it down.

Well a set of 42k armor will give you exotic soldier stats, but I don’t think you can get the equivalent of soldier’s amulet in PvE, so you’ll have to use either clerics or carrion trinkets right.

Right, until you can afford the invader accessories and such, or get the ascended Power/Vit/Toughness rings.

However, with the FoTM update there’s a lot more BoE Power/Vit/Toughness trinkets and rings floating around. I’m still shy a few badges for my amulet, so I picked up a rare one off the Trading Post for 40s. It’s called Amulet of the Dead. There are rare 80 accessories called Soldier’s Field Guide. Sounds like a lot of fun and I’ll try it. Though I’ll probably use my gear mix of soldier’s and knight’s so I’ll have less max hp but about the same toughness. And I’ll probably go 0/0/20/20/30 instead of 30 alch. But I’ll have to test that out.

However, it really seems like a one trick pony. What is your strategy after retaliation has run out? Between the 75%hp elixir B and your elixir B pop, the retaliation will drop and your confusion also isn’t up the whole time. Then your only option seems to be using your blocking/evasion/stealth to get to the next elixir B… but I guess I’ll see
stealth to rescue yourself to the next elixir B.

So I gave this build a spin in WvW, and here’s what I discovered. Keep in mind that I’m not level 80 (I’m 74) and was not playing with the best gear to compliment this build.

Pros:
*It’s fun and different offering a refreshing change of pace.
*Nobody is used to seeing Engineers play like this (yet) which gives it an advantage.
*Elixir S followed by 5 seconds of blocking will get you out of the most dire situations.
*Confusion is one of the most powerful conditions.
*Retaliation is one of the best boons.
*Magnet is powerful and useful.
*Pistol and Shield add utility to this build giving you an additional Confuse, Block, a Blast Finisher, and added defense.
*Med Kit heal is strong and on a short cooldown.

Cons:
*After casting Magnet, Prybar, and popping Elixir B the vast majority of my foes would run away. This was amusing, but extremely annoying. Even the Cripple applied by Smack (Tool Kit #1) and Throw Wrench (Tool Kit toolbelt skill) didn’t seem to help keep people from escaping.
*Clunky play, reliant on coordinating several cooldowns with no guarantee that your opponent will play into your hands.
*Low damage output outside of the combo of Prybar, Elixir B, + people hitting you.
*Pistol hits like a wet noodle and without supporting traits or gear it doesn’t feel like the right weapon for this build, even though Shield compliments it nicely.

Thoughts and Analysis:
*While the Med Kit toolbelt heal is strong and on a short cooldown, the kits 1-5 abilities feel redundant as this build is already very tanky. With a heavy investment in the Elixirs trait line Elixir H seems like a stronger choice.
*Confusion is POWERFUL. I am going to try to shoehorn Bomb Kit into the build. You may have noticed that Static Shot, Prybar, and Concussion Bomb are all in the #3 position, so quick swapping of kits can let you apply many stacks of confusion easily. Just swap and mash 3. I’m not sure if this will be too clunky, but I’m willing to try it to see if I can get 10 stacks of Confusion.
*Rifle might be a better weapon choice. This is a tanky build, but also has some burst which is what the rifle is all about. If someone tries to run from you you can hit them with Net. If you’re not ready to rumble you can blast them back with Overcharged Shot. If they’re limping away and near death you can easily finish them with Blunderbuss or Jump Shot. This gives the build a more active than passive style.
*I’m not totally sold on Supply Crate as the elite for this build. With the in-your-face play style I’m seriously considering Elixir X. If our Elixir traits interacted with X properly (i.e. weren’t bugged), I think it would be the best elite for this build.
*Pain Inverter (Asuran Only): This racial gives you 6 seconds of Retaliation, and inflicts 3 stacks of Confusion (5 sec duration) on all enemies within a radius of 360 range. Not as awesome as all of the boons you get from Elixir B, but it really lays on the Confusion, and has a shorter cooldown. Needs testing.

I’m going to play with the build some more, add some tweaks of my own, and then get back to you all with some news.

Thanks to mischwoof for sharing this fun build.

What upgrades are you going to put into the soldiers amulet and rings?

Crest of the Soldier. Feel free to put something else in if you want, though :>

Anyone have working links to what the OP is talking about so far I’ve never seen an entire thread of broken links till today.

I do have to say tho that this has been one of the funniest well read threads I’ve seen in a long long time!

The link directs to TinyURL. click proceed to this site to see the build. Here’s the raw link if you want it, but keep in mind you will have to manually copy & paste it into your browser bar to see it. Guild wars 2 forums aren’t routing it correctly for some reason and say it’s a bad link.

Generaly, after retaliation runs out, I usually use a block and then static shot. I’ll roll around a bit and if they’re wailing on me and doing enough dps, i’ll drop supply crate on top of them and collect some bandages. After that it’s just toe-to-toeing until it’s back up.

So I gave this build a spin in WvW, and here’s what I discovered. Keep in mind that I’m not level 80 (I’m 74) and was not playing with the best gear to compliment this build.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write an in-depth review of the build. Thanks!

Medkit is personal preference; I personally use it for perma swiftness since it doesn’t have to unequip. Re-equipping toolkit over and over is really annoying for me. I also personally can’t seem to force myself to like Elixir H.

Rifle is a great weapon, and it’d be a great way of adding some more raw damage onto the build. However, without magnetic shield and static shield, I feel incredibly naked. Static shield secures me the most kills next to Supply Crate. Also, my shield has a lion head on it.

As for Elixir X, I personally HATE, and indeed, even LOATHE, this skill. Maybe i’m just unlucky, but I always get the opposite of what I want. I also love bandages, stunning and immobilizing poor souls, and blast finishering on people’s fields all in one package.

Again, thanks for the thoughtful reply :>

I don’t know if it’s me doing something wrong, but I don’t ever notice substantial damage from retaliation. Sure, the attacker gets his 250 or so confusion damage and that’s about it, so if I manage to kill someone it’s mostly due to me being stupidly difficult to kill.

Yeah, I’ve been trying this build out for the last few days, because I was looking for something that was much harder to bring down. Had previously been playing rifle/toolbelt burst spec. The thing is though I just don’t seem to do any damage, and if the opposing player is smart they just don’t attack me when retaliation is up. Survivability is great and in zerg vs zerg i’m usually one of the last men standing, but I have certainly noticed I don’t get many lootbags anymore. Either way pretty cool spec and has certainly been a different play style. Thanks for posting

Simply put: this is an amazing build with a very satisfying play style.
I really like the underdog feeling of running around my enemies with, dodging and blocking their attacks while slowly wearing them down, HP-wise and more importantly morally.
I consider myself a PvP noob, but as OP claims even I could easily beat opponents in one on one matches.
At one point I was defending a base against 4 attackers and survived for an astonishingly long period before they finally pwned me.
This build is about binding enemy resources, and that alone surely helps your team win.

Aren’t the shield skills kind of slow to re-load though? I quit using one just because of that. Unless I’m missing something?

What do you all think about Sigil of Superior Hydromancy for this build?

Try this only if you have confirmed that ditching a kit now counts as a weapon swap. It hasn’t, and I haven’t retested this recently.

I’ve just posted my first pvp video! :> Just a fair warning: it’s more silliness than a build showcase, but I still think it shows a couple things well.

(For anyone seeing this just as it’s posted, the video is still uploading! It’ll be done in a hour or so.)

I don’t know if it’s me doing something wrong, but I don’t ever notice substantial damage from retaliation. Sure, the attacker gets his 250 or so confusion damage and that’s about it, so if I manage to kill someone it’s mostly due to me being stupidly difficult to kill.

It’s easy to miss seeing the numbers that pop up, but it’s definitely there! Once you go up against a shortbow ranger or a thief and you pop retaliation, your ears will be flooded with that lovely retaliation chiming noise.

Whenever you jump to this from the lightning burst rifle spec, you’ll feel like you may as well be doing negative damage! I felt the same way initially. It is a shame not to see those lovely large damage numbers, but I think the survivability and general capacity for causing havoc is definitely worth it. Besides, I still do drop the occasional 3k prybar or throw wrench combo. I don’t have a problem at all getting lootbags, though I guess maybe its because i’m getting REALLY good at tagging enemies in our guild group, ahah!

Thanks for giving it a try and offering your feedback, it’s appreciated :>

Thank you very much for the support! Distracting enemy forces is definitely of huge value to your team, especially during a tower or keep siege. You running like a chicken with it’s head cut off may very well be the difference between losing a keep or defending it!

I don’t have a problem with Reinforced Shield as a trait, which puts Magnetic Shield on 24s, and Static Shield on 32s. Unfortunately there’s a bug that makes the cooldown reduction not properly apply to Static Shield IF you throw it, making it count all the way down from 40s. It’s not too huge of a deal but i’d love if it got fixed soon!

Are you running soldier’s weapons and armor as well? And what are you slotting in your jewelry? Soldier’s crests perhaps?
