The hardest part about this game...
I chose engineer because I always tend to root for the underdogs.
I want to bring the best out of this underrated class and show to those elitist professions who they are messing with.
Also, aren’t you tired of playing as a warrior/guardian/ranger/elementalist from other mmos?
Haha I suppose so, I come from WoW and I have almost every class at 90. One more question: How much does the game change at 80? I’m talking WvW, of course, because right now I get utterly demolished whenever I try to do that.
I don’t know many who actually play Engineers who are disappointed the class’ capabilities, which should tell you something if you’ve ever been to, say, the elementalist forums. Of course, neither is necessarily the correct point of view, but if nothing else, as an engineer, you’ll have options.
Well, you can play safe by throwing nades from the backline and do decent amount of AoE damage and conditions. But if you like to be involved in the heat, like with the warrs and guards in the front line, bomb kit and rocket boots are your friends.

That is kind of a loaded question. I do not know what tier server you are on but in tier one it is more about the zerg. Even at your level it level appropriate gear if you ran around with the zerg you would do just fine. If you want to roam in the most serious manner your going to be on Thief. Warrior, Mesmer, and Ranger are also decent roamers. You could do it on engineer also just ymmv. You shouldn’t see much of change beside having full access to your skills and top tier (maybe not ascended yet but I do not know your laurel/fractal situation) gear.

TBH I don’t care about other people anymore and them saying a class is bad or a class is good. I’ve not had such a blast with the other classes then leveling my engineer in all seriousness.
Thief? Too easy, too spam heavy.
Warrior? Overplayed and my longbow build isn’t as effective(and gets me booted out of dungeon groups).
Guardian? Yeah right…
Elementalist? The only shining light. Tons of fun to play with D/D because of the combo potential.
Ranger? Why do I want a broken AI? Wish pets worked better so I could be a beastmaster.
Necro? Also ok. But no MM build I usually liked in GW1 as the AI is baaaad.
Mesmer? Challenging…but not really fun for me.
Not saying engineer’s got no problems..we’ve got tons of em one being not having much variety in our weapon sets aside from kits.
I’m also not trying to downplay the other professions but I don’t really like all of them and trying to be deviant in some of them is very hard(see warrior trying to main longbow).
It does change later on in WvW once you’ve got more skill points IMHO. In zergs using granades with 30 points in explosives increases your damage potential by 33%(well it is one more granade, right? =) ) and if you’re a roamer you’ll have more possibilities for survival and all that jazz. At 68 it should open up a little more but the final finishing points should help even more. I’m also just 75 atm but I noticed a difference once I had more points to spend.
Engineer requires a bit more effort than say a thief. But we’re so versatile and actually bring more to a group than most professions imo. We’re quite strong in aoe, direct damage, conditions, bunker, support, 1v1, & zerg-fests. Our library of builds makes it so fun to have an Engi and not need any other professions because we can adapt to any situation. Don’t listen to people who say Engi suck because we don’t. I think we’re just misunderstood. And those zerk warriors just don’t have the time or intelligence to master an Engi.

Engineer’s build variety is pretty much unrivalled amongst the classes. There comes a certain point in mastering any class when you realise that pretty much most skills and utilities are “worthy” of slotting on your bar. The only “bad” skills are the ones that are outclassed by other skills in the same category.
For Engineer, what you put in slots 6-9 defines how you play, unlike other classes where it is usually weapons and associated traits. Many skills and utilities are also counterintuitive when first picking them up, which doesn’t help when levelling an Engineer blind. Rifle, for example, shines most when used up close. Counterintuitively, Pistol/Shield is the mid-long range favoured weapon while Pistol/Pistol is strong at mid-short ranges.
In terms of traits, Engineer traits are a minefield of uncontested best-in-slots like Incendiary Powder or absolute bombs like Autotool Installation. On the plus side, Engineers aren’t as trait dependant as other classes unlike Mesmer, where what you trait literally defines what you should then slot best in utilities.
In terms of skill floor and skill ceiling, Engineer’s skill floor is quite high, and it is easy to feel like you do no damage or are simply outclassed in other aspects without fully exploiting the mechanics of a skill. You will not do well by auto-attacking with any weapon save for traited Grenades. Even then, there are tons of activations you can slot in between large cooldowns to boost your own damage or survivability or team support. You haven’t played engineer until you have more than 1 kit, that’s for sure.
Engineer’s also one of the few classes that boasts animation and GCD cancelling to a large degree. Before the nerf to Kit refinement, Guanglai Kangyi’s GCD cancelling Kit refinement build boasted one of the highest sustained DPS achievable to the Engineer, although you probably needed a macro mouse or inhuman APM to achieve it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=del9A5Erb40
You can also GCD and animation cancel the following:
Swap to med-kit -> Swap to weapon kit: This bypasses the 1 second kitswap requirement introduced with the Kit Refinement nerf and can even be used while autoattacking. Used commonly to trigger Enhance Performance (Explosives X) with the Sigil of Battle to get 6-9 stacks of Might to empower the next attack. GW2Guru’s Grenadier build should explain it.
Channelled skills on associated kits -> Stow kit: You can channel Flamethrower’s #1 (although why anyone does that is beyond me), press the kit’s slot # again to stow the kit, then use other kits or weapon skills. You can also do the same to Elixir Gun’s Fumigate and Toolkit’s Gear shield and Magnet Pull. This is good to hide burst combos from other players in WvW and PvP, as well as queueing up your next burst skill in your rotation. Look up the “Bo-Bomber” build for a video explaining how to use this trick.
Animation cancelled movement skills: Jump Shot used to have awful aftercast which was remedied by swapping to another kit. You can still do it, but it’s less necessary now. Elixir Gun’s Acid Bomb leap can be cancelled mid flight by spamming “Drop bundle” when you want to land. The dodge at the end of Rocket Boots can be realigned in direction by flicking your camera to the desired direction of your roll before your flight completes.

I mainly plan on doing PvP and WvWvW.
Engineer is a top-tier PvP and WvW class. I wouldn’t worry about that.
Most of the concerns you hear are related to PvE, where the meta is currently defined by speed running content. Grenade and Bomb Engineers do their share of DPS, but running a couple Warriors in a group is more efficient given the way banners work and how shout boons stack on top of each other. With Guardians and their supreme support through projectile walls, Aegis, and Protection, and Mesmers with their Mass Invisibility and Quickness, it doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for Engineers (or the other classes for that matter) to really thrive.
On the plus side, Engineers aren’t as trait dependant as other classes.
Wut.

Yup. Enjoy.

Mesmer
- Follow the Anets custom made combos and win (shatter).
Thief
- Spam the recently buffed skill till enemy dies(2222,3333)
Warrior
- extremely straight forward, cd up ? use skill, then auto attack(1,2,3,4,5)
Ranger
- Survive long enough for AI to kill
Ele
- Follow a set of rotations
Necro
- condi > fear > /laugh <3
Engineer
- lots of key smashing and clicking
- no premade combos and highly customizable
- highly reactive
- most fun out all classes
- lots of skills and key smashing! (Up to 34+ if you run kits)
all classes are good, Enginner Just require a bit more work and quick reaction, we do have some of the strongest DSP as well as bunkers/support, we can do about everything other classes can, you just need to be creative and enjoy button smashing but overall, Enginner is the most fun class
(edited by google.3709)
Engineer lacks a decent stability, it’s a serious issue, especially in large engagements.
engi is a all around class. can do awsome direct damage and con dmg
can be tough enough to play as a bunker/tank
can be high dps roaming
can be a good healer/support
if engi do dmg like a warrior, tank like a guardian, ppl call this Overpower lol
engi is the most funnies class, combination for their skill
i really luv my engi
Engineers shine at level 80. Until you reach that level, don’t judge them.
Also, Engineers are just FUN! And that’s what this is all about, right? There is no more versatile class and the kits they have are just hilarious.

Why? What happens at 80 that does not happen at 65 ?

Generally, you need to be at least 70, if not 80, to hit all the points of a staple build. For example, the current #1 damage build is HGH Grenades, which requires both a grandmaster in explosives and a grandmaster in alchemy. In order to be mobile in WvW, the build needs another 10 in tools in order to get Speedy Kits. My personal damage build, which is much more mobile and slippery than HGH variants but doesn’t stack might as a result, requires 30 in explosives, 20 in tools, and 15 in firearms for the core traits. That only leaves 5 points (At level 80, too) to spend anywhere else.

Ele
- Follow a set of rotations
While you can chose to play thief by “ear” and the same with warrior (to a degree) the fact is the only class i have ever fallen asleep while playing due to sheer boredom is ele. 20 skills but in reality it’s still a rotation.
3 kit engineer to be fair can run a rotation but you could also just sit in a kit.
