Thinking of starting an engineer
1. For weapons we have pistol/pistol, pistol/shield, and rifle. Pistols are pure condi, shield is very defensive with lots of interrupts (perplexity) and rifle is pure power. You use your weapon and kit skills as you need them. You don’t just say “im a pistol engineer!” And use all the skills off cool down then spam the autoattack. Itd probably work against mobs and bad players, but then you could swap to nades and use all those, then go back to pistol and use all those skills again. It a bit like ele in that you use what you need when you need it, especially since kits have no CD you can constantly bring swapping inbetween kits and your weapon skills.
2. If you l2p endgame is way fun on an engineer. Be it WvW or PVE you have to be constantly moving and on your toes. In PVE engis offer great might/vuln stacking, top tier DPS, condi cleanse, stealth for skipping if needed, water fields for area heals, and projectile reflection, all in the same build.
3. There is no capped amount if turrets you can use, but they do take up a utility slot so the max you can have is 4.
1. there are two types of engineers, those who don’t like kits and those who runs 3 of them. Using 0 kits imo is pretty bad, you cant use swap sigils, and you’re limiting the number of utilities the kits can bring out. Imo an engineer can fully use their kits and never pull their weapon but thats just not optimal. All in all, you should always use both your “real weapon” and the kits, if you don’t like kits that much then i suggest at least use one kit.
2. Hmm end game feels pretty fun for me so far, you wont suddenly suck there. engineers have a large number of build variety. Youre great at duels and WvW, youre slightly above average for sPVP imo. For PVE, i gotta agree with Carpboy except for the top tier DPS, i feel like our DPS is average but thats just me.
3. Maximum number of turrets that can be out at once is 4, but be warned, turrets in the condition they are in now, are sort of underpowered due to bugs and how weak they are overall.
I like engi for the reason many people look down upon it, it’s a jack-of-all-trades class. I’m running a full Celestial engi now and I love it. While people looking at raw numbers will probably disagree, I find it does a sufficient to excellent job at everything.
You have many choices on how to run your build. I find my engi to be extremely tanky while still dishing out nice damage (kit swapping is key), offering vulnerability stacking, knockbacks, immobilizes, launches (nice to send an upscaled charging Risen Abomination flying), superb condition cleanse (elixir gun) and overall it’s just fun to play, because you aren’t as limited as you are with other classes, I find.
So if you find a build to your liking and learn to utilize your class skills, the endgame won’t ‘suddenly suck’. Personally, I love my engi-endgame much more than any other classes’, and I’ve played quite a bit of every class.
As for the other points, the question have been answered pretty well I think.
1) Engineers have very low weapon variety, Ive heard this is because of kits. Thus, how much use of an actual weapon(non kits) does an engineer have?
Inversely, can an engineer fully rely on kits and never pull their “real weapon”?
Our weapons (rifle, pistol, shield) are actually pretty good, but you’ll never use just your weapons because it would seriously hamper you. You can however, rotate through your kits and never use your weapons. Although, that’s not ideal, as our weapons have good tools so again, you can but you probably wouldn’t. In general, you’ll spend the vast majority of your time in kits.
2)Are there any expectations I should have for endgame? will I suddenly suck there, how varied will builds be, etc.
Engineers are even better once we hit 80. Our traits are pretty solid. The variety of builds is wide, even within the same build. For instance, certain utilities/traits can be swapped around for variety or playstyle preference or situationally.
3) How many turrets can you have out at once?
Four plus your elite Supply Drop. But you never will. Due to them dying as quickly as anything else summoned, they’re most often used by dropping > overcharging > detonating/picking up. Supply Drop is pretty epic though.

our weapons are amazing. use them always in conjunction with kits.
i use 5 different builds with one gear set for pve. builds are diverse but it’s pve. it’s so kitten easy you can use anything really.
every turret except healing turret is really really really really really really bad. don’t use them.
Alright, as the title says Im thinking of starting an engineer and have some questions.
This is not a “convince me” thread.1) Engineers have very low weapon variety, Ive heard this is because of kits. Thus, how much use of an actual weapon(non kits) does an engineer have?
Inversely, can an engineer fully rely on kits and never pull their “real weapon”?2)Are there any expectations I should have for endgame? will I suddenly suck there, how varied will builds be, etc.
3) How many turrets can you have out at once?
Thanks in advance.
1) Dual Pistols with some traits are great on their own in terms of damage and control. Rifle is great too but often underwhelming mostly AOE wise which is why it’s often compensated by a kit like Grenades.
2) You will unlock your full potential after the level 50 or so because some of our traits are really powerful when combined. And you have tons of build and stat build variations for both PvE and PvP. Condition Damage is on par with Necro if not better, Direct Damage can be amazing although difficult to pull off and you can become a M1 Abrams if you desire. You can also mix between two of these features and even all three of them with a little patience and gold. Everything works.
3) One turret per utility slot, including the heal which makes 4. Add the supply crate and you can have 7 of them for a little while.

Engineers play very schizo. More so than an elementalist.
If you decide to walk the path of an engineer, you may want to reconfigure your key bindings for easy kit access.
