ANET,
First of all, I would like to say, you all have done a fantastic job. I had been out of the MMO circuit for a little while, but this game is loads of fun. Much love to your world designers, and to you character designers. It is clear they put a lot of love in to this game, and it shows from every pristine vista and character model.

That being said, I wanted to say something about the Engineer class. I don’t like to gripe, but alas, you will never know what I am thinking about something unless I actually say it, so here it goes.

I like my engineer. She is cool as sin. Shes got a flamethrower, she can throw nades, I have a mortar (which I love to use), and all kinds of other cool stuff. After playing through to 80, and several dungeons, I have some suggested improvements.

First of all, whenever I drop my turrets, they seem to act like some sort of AoE magnet. It’s ok, I suppose. While my turrets are taking the hits, we aren’t, but I would like them to be more than just a metal meat shield. Perhaps give a native damage reductiont o them, or let them fire more often, or do higher damage to justify their woefully short lifespans.

Next, and I am sure this has been touched on before in this forum, but I think it bears repeating. There is a large gap in DPS output between some of our kits, weapons, and abilities. For example, I am a rifle engineer. I am geared completely for power/prec/crit is the best gear available. If I were to throw on my flamethrower, I suffer a significant dps loss. The scaling isn’t there

In addition, it would seem that, given my AC, wandering anywhere within 600 yard of a boss type will almost always result in a downed state, leaving me with 1 damage attack from range. The auto attack. It does alright damage, but it’s boring. I played a buddies 80 rifle warrior and WOW. Not only does it blow my damage out of the water, it is SO much more fun to play.

Now I know at this point some people are going to say, “Nades man! Nades do SO much damage! Just switch to nades and youll be fine!” To which I respond, ‘Nay good sir.’ This is a problem I encountered in Diablo 3 with my witchdoctor. There was a plethora of interesting builds available prior to the last patch, but only one really did anything useful. If you weren’t that spec, you did sup par damage, BUT you did have some control effects that were largely dispensable due to the nature of the gameplay. I kind of feel that this is how the engineer class is right now. We have 1 or 2 good specs and playstyle, but the class has SO much more to offer! Why not give it a little polish and show how much diversity an engineer can bring to the table!?

Lastly, and this is kind of off topic for this forum, but I feel it needs to be said. If an account is flagged as a bot, all you need do is flip a switch that allows players to hunt, and kill them. Create a vendor even, looting bot badges and turning them in for vanity items. Like a necklace of ears, or something. We could have contests to see who culled the most botters. Remember, ANET, the best type of moderation, is self moderation. What better way to answer botters than to have them lose all that hard earned gold repairing and teleporting it all away as the legitimate players reap the benefits!

Well, that’s it. I hope I was able to sum up my mind in some sort of coherent fashion. I hope this gets read, and more importantly listened to.

I am not asking for nerfs to other classes, but I am askign that some of the other available playstyles be brought up to the levels of damage and fun available via grenades.

Oh, and I almost forgot, the mortar does less damage and has less range than grenades. Kind of odd, don’t you think?

I agree, if a class only has 1 or 2 viable builds, it is broken and needs fixing. And no, it doesn’t matter how good those 1 or 2 good builds are.

I hope your not implying that engineer only has 1 or 2 viable builds. Because if you are, you should go into comedy. There are 4-5 solid and very different engineer builds, easily.

Poor craftsman blame their tools. Poor players blame their Engineer.

Agreed.

The way I see it, grenade kit+ grenadier is actually good, not from the sense that ‘it does good damage’, but from a balance perspective.

Remember, it takes 30 trait points, and a grandmaster trait. Its not like any build can have it.

Heaven forbid that a build that invests heavily does well.

However, in comparison other builds don’t do as well, so, the solution is to buff other builds.

Buff flamethrower, buff tool kit, buff turrets, buff elixir X, buff mortar, buff pistols. Do it all!

coglin, I would like to know exactly what 4-5 viable builds you’re speaking of. I almost haven’t seen a single engineer in dungeons, and most people just write them off as a class. If you know there’s more viability to the engineer than most people think, please do share, and include videos that might prove they’re just as effective as a warrior running his index finger from 1 to 9 repeatedly

Trying to think…

Theres the grenade build. But that’s more PvE orientated.
The pistol shield elixir build.
The rifle toolbelt burst build. But that’s more PvP orientated.

And uhh…

uhhhh….

Unless of course you mean something like ‘changing one utility= a new build’, then sure. But as for BUILDS, there aren’t too many.

I’m farily happy with my build both in PvE and PvP

Also seen lots of variations on Engineer in PvP, it’s more a question of play style than viable build, if you want massive burst dmg then sure there might not be that many builds.

You’ve got Bomberman builds (30 0 30 10 0) or (30 0 20 20 0) and some other variations

You’ve got Grenade builds (30 20 0 20 0) or (30 10 0 10 20) and some other variations

You’ve got Condi P/P and P/S builds (10 30 0 30 0) or (10 30 20 10 0) and other variations

You’ve got Rifle tool burst builds (10 20 0 10 30) or (20 20 0 0 30) or (25 20 0 0 25) and variations

These don’t go into the more support / healing tool / invention and tool / alchemy builds for condi removal, healing, and boon stacking.

The only issue with a lot of engi builds is they tend to be specialized for certain game play types and while they work fantastic in some settings they are sub-par in others. Like bomberman in WvW can be useless as can grenade when kiting. condi builds can be good 1v1 and solo pve / group pve but they lack the range and aoe for WvW. Rifle builds have nice damage but put you up front in melee.

So there’s a give and take. it’s not that engi is bad, just that certain spec’s on others are just insane.

Full elixir builds are very viable. Full turrets are very viable. Full control/gadget builds are viable. Kit builds are very viable. P/P and P/S pure condition damage builds are very viable. Pure crit/pow/crit% rifle builds are very viable.

How many am I up to so far?

I am not claiming the class doesn’t feel under powered. I am simply stating that we have many build that are extremely viable. Just because you personally do not see them, does not mean they aren’t used well.

So OP… you want all your utilities be yust as strong as you are yourself even though you know an flametrower with the same dps as rifle would be overpowered because the flametrower has more versatile skills allowing knockback and blind to…
so you want to be able t run around with flametrower kit forever without ever feeling the need to switch?
You want turrets to be able to kill people on sight and want to be able 1 shot boss mobs since you apparently are not skilled enough to kill them?

GJ OP… ill yust leave and go back to my P/P build everyone says is impossible to play, but for some reason i keep owning those nade noobs with it. <— only sentence that wasnt sarcasm

“Full turret builds”

lol

“Full control/gadget build”

Wut… the control from ‘gadgets’ comes from 60s cooldown, 45s cooldown and of course, the now nerfed mines which cause a knockback on an 18s cooldown.

All of this anyone can get on a significantly shorter cooldown.

Overcharged shot= 15s cooldown=same launch as PBR

The likes of: Tremor, Backbreaker, Bulls charge, Bane Signet, Tripwire, Gale, Earthquake… you see where I’m going with this. Every single OTHER knockdown has a shorter cooldown than slick shoes. And just because it can affect multiple targets, does not justify the cooldown. Quite a few of the ones I listed are AoE knockdowns as well.

Good ol’e rifle butt from warriors or even our own flamethrowers push does a better job at pushing back.

Anyways, the point is: going full gadgets gives you limited CC options. You aren’t that good at control. Going with the rifle gives you at most, 4 pieces of CC, provided you go for no stun breaker. And 5, but with different mechanics, if you go for the pistol shield.

But in the end, its not really viable. A naked rifle build, that is not specced heavily for burst, like the rifle burst build, or a pistol shield build, that isn’t build around elixirs and conditions, somewhat fail. The damage is simply too low, and your ‘CC’ isn’t that high.

Yeah, obviously traits need to be bug fixed. Alot of stuff not working limits the possibilities atm.

And some things need to be balanced. Gadgets I think are way behind others.
Slick shoes, Ut goggles, ram. Does anyone use these? and why in the world would they. so far behind other skills, or professions skills.

Honestly, every profession has this problem. Play an elementalist. They have TERRIBLE utility skills. Pretty much everyone takes, armor of earth, mist form, a signet for passive, and fiery greatsword elite. Basically EVERYTHING else is engi gadget level bad. (granted, the rest of elem makes up for it)
