I wanted to know if anyone has found a good use for tool kits. I got my level 80 engineer and everytime I think I know everything there is to know about him I discover something new. So I don’t want to miss out on something tool kits are good, especially PvE.

The pry-bar, shield and pull offers a lot of utility. Especially the pull, with its massive range. I hear engineers love it in WvW.

The first two skills aren’t that great right now.

Tool Kit is a mainstay of my Wv3 build, and sometimes appears when I’m in a dungeon depending on encounter.

Magnet is 1200 range of wonderful in PvP, and in PvE it can be used on certain pulls to grab one mob and not its entourage (think the wardens in TA).

Box of Nails is mean-spirited fun if you drop it in a good spot when PvPing, and can help with kiting melee mobs in PvE.

Prybar is a great followup to a magnet pull because who doesn’t like instantly applying confusion?

Gear Shield should make tool kit a definate bar consideration for any PvE event that requires you to simply survive, such as either the brazier or “protect Maag” events in CoF, or standing on a switch in dredge fractal. It’s 3 seconds of block, and can save your bacon. It is also just as fantastic in PvP, and combined with Elixir S can give you 6 seconds of nearly free running if you’re trying to break through a mob to a tower entrance or the like.

The auto-whack attack is meh, but you can use it on mobs that have projectile reflect shields (I prefer flamethrower for those, though).

LEgo forgot about throw wrench with it’s lightning bolt trait. I’m running half-bunker on pvp with tool kit and riffle, and when some thief come to me and trying to burst lots of damage i just use shield, wait, and then my part begins
Also autoatack sometime may be usefull.

to be honest every skill on the toolkit has its place its just very situational. I dont know if i could do wvw without it tho its just too handy to have another 3 seconds of blocking and the ability to pull people off walls.

It appears that tool kits serve a much greater purpose in sPvP than in PvE

If you take 15 seconds to look at what Tool Kit’s skills can do, you’ll realize it’s useful.

I really enjoy using the tool kit in WvW since Magnet’s range has been buffed to 1200. Evil laughs often ensue.
Gear Shield is 3s of invulnerability, what’s not to like ?
I generally do not use it in PvE as I think we have better options.

I like this job. I like it !

Prybar hits harder than the grenade kit’s auto attack, and there’s 5 other skills you picked up by choosing toolkit. And this is before confusion. Throw Wrench also hits harder, and you’ve got a gear shield to pull shenanigans with.

Disagree entirely. The AoE cripple/bleed is pretty nice. Also the damage scaling/numbers on 1 are incredibly high for power builds.

I think toolkit is in a good spot. Let’s hope they dont undo any of last patch buffs.

Toolkit really needs to replace Box of Nails with something. Its just…ew. Cripple and bleed is great, but 1 second cast time, and they can just run away from the pitiful area it covers? And smack, whack, and thwack? Really need to be replaced by Throw wrench, or something better then “bad damage and vuln, bad damage and vuln, good damage on a 1 second cast time”. Prybar, Gear shield and magnet are great though.

Ah ha! but if you have kit refinement (I never leave home without it) it spawns a Box of nails instantly when you switch to toolkit, which gives you time/space to cast another box of nails ontop of it!

I would rather run Swift on Kit use and Vigor on Swiftness.

Im not one for taking a trait to make an ability useful when i can get better benefits.

Is Toolkit stronger than Flamethrower? DMG-wise? I couldnt test it yet. I can see that Tool does have a lot of utility. It’s good PvP. How is it in PvE?

The flamethrower is deceptively weak. It does hit a nice area once you understand the targetting, though.

If you’re powercrit? Against a single target? Yes, way stronger.

I just wonder if there is a decent PvE build including toolkit like the TANKCAT build.
Someone said I shud prefer Flamethrower when PvE.

Well no since that build is a dedicated to countering burst specs through retaliation, confusion and block. That does not carry over well to general PvE.

However I did find some uses in dungeons : the AoE cripple with box of nails (x2 with kit refinement) helps nicely when dealing with melee-only mobs, and the block of gear shield is handy when you run out of endurance.

I like this job. I like it !

well there’s tankcat on these very forums.

I myself have modified his system for my uses for pve. Now it’s hard for many of the mobs in Orr to kill me as I laugh blowing them to bits and blocking their attacks muahahaha!

here’s my build

This is heavily melee range so if you don’t like that then don’t do it. The gun i use just for quick healing really. the two heal fields one with cond removal and the regen toolbelt ability works like magic. but it’s not it’s definitely not magic, it’s alchemy HAHA!

I love how the OP keeps on saying over and over he’s interested in PvE, and the responses are almost all about WvW/sPvP.

It’s not as good for PvE, but it’ll do all right. It could potentially be your “main damage” kit, although it’s melee only and just a single dps skill besides autoattack. The damage should feel pretty similar to a flamethrower, although neither is very high and the flamethrower is AoE.

I would recommend taking kit refinement and just switching to it for a couple seconds, and doing damage with your rifle/higher damage kits.

PvE turret builds aren’t very popular right now, but the turret-repairing skills could become amazing in PvE after future patches.

tl;dr? For PvE, the toolkit makes for amazing mob/boss kiting, does medium melee damage, and has a block.
