I think it´s possible that the “Forge”-Elite Spec can maybe go into an Iron Man-Kind of Theme. Somekind of Passive-Active Switch:
Passive buff using Drones as Armor and active skills for…well, Engineer Stuff, nukes, evades, leaps, blast finishers An Armor-Boon would be also an option, especialy in combination with the hammer as meele weapon. It would be also a complete new of game mechanic, a medium-armor-class that can obtain heavy-armor stats and give them up for the sake of utility skills, geting vunerable in meele combat again. This would also synergize with the current traits. It would also fit to the look of the Engineer in the Trailer. The names of the new Drone-Models that were Datamined some time ago brought me on this Idea (As I can remember the different styles had names of Armor Parts, but I´m not sure about this point!)
I am personally still waiting for bug fixing (such a lot for the engineer…), coated bullets, rifled barrels baseline. And deleting all the “placeholders” traits such as “Glass Canon: 5% more damage above 90%”, and rather have a look on meaningful grandmaster traits in order to have engineers torn between choices on creating a build.
Then, we will be able to talk about specialization.
