I would of picked Guard or rev over Engi any day. The only thing engi added was a little superspeed and a moving water that really mattered and stealth for rezzing I guess.

Stealth gyro is also good for hiding our driver since he tends to get sniped alot in the big fights, being able to break target every time we make a pass is nice. We had two guards to cover stab and a rev for buffs and resist.

So to be clear. You would have still taken a 3rd guard or second rev? Engi damage is rock solid the builds there to help sustain and even a couple party buffs stealth/reflects to help the group out great water feild for regroups and can double as aoe protection when thigns get hot. dam dude kinda of a kitten comment but ehh internet rite?

Stealth helps breaks target and engi dps is good but when your making a wvw comp you got to think of what that class is putting into the mix. Also the explosive trait line isn’t do much for you…. the only reason you took it was for nades where something else could be used like egun #3 to remove 25 conditions total from your group also acid eg #4 with hammer 5 can do some good aoe dps. Personal I like mortar for that time when your not in melee range to still have some damage. I’m guessing that is why you took nades too. Trait wise I would take inventions over explovsives you get your heal back at 25% hp and you can also take MDF in inventions to heal your party more.

Started this guy with inventions and while the extra utility from the trait line is nice the fact remains that alot of the stuff u gain is being given by other member of the party.

Small man and solo inventions line makes sense but when you start running 15-20+ in wvw you gota rely on other team members. Why I dont take egun = We run enough gards/revs/eles to really not worry about condi clense. Acid bomb is nice damage but the launch backwards can and will put you real far away from your tag and out of the damage zone. INstead of hitting acid bomb i hit grenade barrage and that hammer3/hammer5/gernade barrage combo is down rite devastating. I have start calling that combo “Engi wells”

Explosive is a pure dps boost for me. The difference between slow moving and fasting moving gernades is a dps upgrade 7% on vuln targets is a dps upgrade and being able to proc bleeds/cripple so these fools cant run from my tank train is a dps boost for everyone in the end. It doesn’t do much for the group admittedly . I take the mortar line when im not running in the drivers group because adding double finger of god (mortar f5) to the above mentioned combo is. well its..so sexy..

You can swap out of egun so the acid bomb does not launch you backwards just in place. I also feel like the 15% chance to bleed/cripple is really weak I know your throwing 3 nades and max 3 targets, but as a elite trait I feel like it’s very unpowered unless your camping nades all day. Invention do give you thing that other classes don’t unless your just looking at the minor traits.

Alot of succesfull engineers that are running in tight guild groups tend to run either inventions, alch, scrapper or tools, alch, scrapper.

personally i wouldnt run scrapper in a pug zerg, however I defo would run it with a rly good guild

Inventions or tools would be a far better pick than explosives. Drop grenades and pick either elixir gun or tool kit…either one is solid choice depending on the comp/situation. Grenade kit just isn’t worth it compared to the utility of tool or elixir gun unless your group runs hardcore pirate ship.

Thanks for sharing.

Not a fan of sneak gyro; as the bigger the numbers get because it cannot keep up with swiftness-boosted characters. It’s designed to pretty much keep up someone using a 25% move bonus (ala mecha legs). Also the gyro itself is visible which is fine when you’re alone but when people in a group see it, it’s prone for an easy target to drop aoe on. Personally I think Mortar is better beceause of the additional chill field (frost aura), poison on downs, and of course, the extra water field.

The other issue is the stability. You were fortunate enough to be placed with 2 guardians, so if it’s a guild group you trust that can do that for you, you should do a lot better. If you’re in a pug zerg, you will most certainly be dumped in the trash with the rangers and co so do take account that or bring your own personal stability in the form of Elixir B but honestly if you have guardians giving you stab, the toss B is a good supplemental form of stability in case someone screws up their stab.

Other comments on the video:

  • You should turn on show enemy names tags, because it was rather hard to discern what you were actually fighting. It’s a good idea to know how many enemies you’re fighting.
  • Nades aren’t really recommended because if you note, those 500 retal ticks do add out. It’s the same reason why guardians do not randomly whirling wrath in the middle of a zerg and if you have enemy auramancers hitting their magnetic aura, you’re in for a world of hurt. Also nades are mostly taken for vuln spam which is great! And chills and stuff. But these things tend to be really marginal in zergs…
  • You don’t have a blast finisher, and this is a problem when people call for waters. If you can control your rocket charge, or just find an enemy nearby to smack in the face, a leap finisher in a water field generates comparable healing as long as you don’t get too far out of position. It’s also good to use when you activate f1.
  • Speaking of that, you have I believe no condi clears either. (EDIT: You actually do, HGH just increases the frequency) This is fine with revenants spamming resistance and guardian condi clears, but it does put a burden on them. All the other standard zerg classes generally have a good panic button when it comes to condis should the resistance fail. For example, guardians come with f2 condi clears and Pure of Voice ready, and tempests can overload water. This doesn’t mean they don’t trust their teammates, but it’s something that comes standard anyways. I think HGH is great; I’ve never had a need for Iron Blooded and it feels somewhat selfish anyways.
  • Also not a fan of Final Salvo in zergs. The reason for that is that it creates a lightning field when the stuff blows up and that can sometimes be highly undesirable.

Anyhow, whatever works for you and keep up the good work and hope to see more videos.

I’m confused by the explosives hate. Did the grenade damage seem low or something?

Okdk archon. Stealth gyro is to break target for my driver and an oh kitten button . The build is only ran in guild groups so no need for condi clears imo. Yes retal hurts that’s why it’s not advisable to just spam one and use nades. Think of nades as more necro wells than rapid fire mortar personally. A guardian can really hurt himself with gs in a group with retal but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t use it. Same concept with nades.

Final salvo is also my the oops stab and lightning fields on water regroups is a l2p issue not a final salvo issue. personally it’s the guardians usually effing up the water regroups. Hgh with my build doesn’t help me. But iron blood helps when I’m balls deep with the tank train also allows me to run relatively low armor for front line and put those points in damage.

And pug zergs are pug zergs kitten those jokers.

i can agree with this tbh, apart from the nade kit, toolkit with 13sec cd is too valuable to let go of imo

at the end of the day whatever floats ur boat.

running heal gyro, dmg reduce gyro (forgot the name…..) and sneak gyro provides rly nice speed buffs for frontline. And I agree with sneak gyro over the toehr elites for many reasons; stab, speed and stealth if even for 3sec

I normally would agree lightning fields overwriting other fields is normally a l2p issue which is why I didn’t say anything about thunderclap, but it is linked to your heal which is why I find it a bit sketchy. As a side note is final salvo superspeed AOE; since the tooltip is very vague on it.

I don’t think wells are a good comparison against nades, because wells can strip boons, and also are not reflectable. Wells also tick 5 targets per pulse while you hit multiple targets per grenade. Its a big difference. Nades are good for vuln, chill, and poison beyond raw damage, and that’s it. Note that Revs, Eles, and Necros all have big burst skills that aren’t reflectable. It’s just a sad fact of life when Revs, Eles, and guardians can potentially put out a lot of projectile hate, and the former two with almost zero effort.

Explosives isn’t really a favored tree because it mostly just increases more damage. It’s basically 7% more damage and 10% extra damage but only for the grenades. None of the GM traits are particularly good. The vulnerability stacking is so-so. The mortar trait is quite nice but you’re not using it.

If you’d like to keep Explosives, maybe try Throw Mine. The toolbelt skill isn’t reflectable and is easy to get off in melee, plus the occasional boon strip is useful. The actual utility isn’t too hot but it is a blast finisher and can also be thrown where the enemy will go making it less subject to reflects. Sure there’s cooldowns on it but it’s not like you’d be spamming nades anyways.

Inventions is nice because of the extra healing, mecha legs, and bunker down also contributes a good bit of damage. I don’t think it’s essential as much as I find most engineer trees highly lacking so if you can live without it, that’s fine too.

As for stealth, I think Toss Elxiir S tends to be better for breaking target but I suppose using them both has its perks.

Personally, I think Revs and Eles have dominated support so hard, that there really doesn’t seem to be any space for non-GREN. However, the ele’s recent nerfs may change matters a bit… so keep on experimenting.

Def l2p issue as far as lightning fields on water Fields are concerned . kill bots before regroup or kill it after blasting water its really very simple. Contrary to popular belief its not that hard of a game =)

The well comparison was more damage and condi applications. Wells cant be reflected I admit but wells are also on a much longer timer and stationary so don’t miss also hope they don’t walk out of it. and correct me if i’m wrong its only 1 well that strips boons.and i dont know if i would say spam nades all day but they work as my other weapon. remember engis only get 1. Also hammer all on its own dose high damage. nades allows me to compound all of my best damage skills from both weapons into one big kitten wombo combo. . retal is not hurting me because im doing low damage

Throw mine was fun and actually a pretty solid choice but its funny you mention it because the tool belt ability on throw mine will 100-0 kill you faster then nades as far as retal is concerned.. It has happened to me on a couple separate occasions funny as hell . I actually want to try throw mine with with a tool/inv/scrap (mines everywhere!) build but i mite have to bulk up on toughness/vit if im losing ironblood and the occasional adaptive armor

You and a couple of others are making the case for Inv/tool like i dont know about it. trust my friends I know all about it. inv/alch/scrap was my first frontline build but like anything else i got a little better at staying alive so now i can trade out some survive -ability for raw damage.

I’m not really sure how mine field, could kill you as fast as nades could considering you can’t spam it at all and you could really just hit the same amount of targets with nades. You’d have to be pretty kitten ed lucky, but TBH the only time I’ve died to retaliation is when I foolishly overload fire on ele (remind me to not do that). But it’s more of the combo of reflects + retaliation— I mean, yea I’ve opened nades in zergs before. I’ve even done FT! But I’m going to tell everyone the risks involved.

You and a couple of others are making the case for Inv/tool like i dont know about it. trust my friends I know all about it. inv/alch/scrap was my first frontline build but like anything else i got a little better at staying alive so now i can trade out some survive -ability for raw damage.

There’s only 6 trees lol, so yes the chance you’ve come across it is high. Of course many of us have played engineer (I sure hope!) and inventions is just one that’s hard to let go. It’s not like any of us introduced firearms right? If you can survive without it, that’s fine. I just don’t like a damage oriented tree because I feel one could just gear more aggressively and since a good chunk of the damage is biased towards explosive, which again, I’ve expressed potential problems with the dps being realized.

lol there it is…. GREN. What is it about this community?

Wah, call me narrow minded or dumb or something. That’s too far man.

But seriously, you really think I told you to go play another class? Why would I even bother commenting on builds and utilities then, or even open this thread beyond “LOLZ PLay A REVEANT”?

What you choose to play is your own decision, but you can’t just ignore the meta because the enemies and some of your allies are most likely following some variant of it so it’s a good idea to know where you stand in it. There’s a reason why your own group consists of 2 guardians and a rev— they’re indispensable, and meanwhile you are competing against eles and warriors for the same spots! This is a fact. If your group is able to accommodate your needs, that is definitely swell, but usually when it comes to this thread, we’re generally talking about giving advice to the general public well.

All I am saying is that it is very hard to compete with these things currently, and (I’m not sure how you didn’t read the last part), that the recent whack to tempests might give scrappers a place to stand more so. So again, where is this classism?

Interestingly enough, metabattle lists scrappers (but not warriors) as part of the wvw meta which brings me a chuckle since metabattle isn’t everything. But it’s still amusing enough to bring up and the general quality of the WvW section has steadily gone up, so….. are there some sick Toss Elixir R scrappers running around or something?

Ok to start. Maybe a little harsh on my last comment. My bad. Mentioning gwen and meta triggers me because i know socially (game wise) i have never been accepted simply because of the class i play no matter how hard or well i play. and in my defense you didnt say lol play rev but im pretty sure thats what the first dude to reply in my post did. but that aside.

I think throw mines toolbelt kills me because it hits more people then barrage and a little bit harder maybe?but def more targets. mines toolbelt can hit up to 25 i think while the barrage best case is 18? My math is most probably wrong so dont quote me. but i wish i was recording when it happened i’ll try and recreate it for ya next few nights.

and no one said firearms lol but my gut tells me there is a sleeping giant in a condition juggy build. more to come.

all jokes aside archonwing i appreciate the feedback man and i apologize for maybe barkin at ya.

Yea it missed the Q mark.

Well I mean it does say “Gyros grant superspeed” and most tooltips usually say “for allies” but boo Anet for not documenting their game properly. =p

And as for Rocknull, yea I’d imagine that thing is quite a trigger xD and I do understand because sometimes I’m the only scrapper in the whole group but fortunately my guildies know what’s up and generally prefer me around anyways as opposed to not as all. I can definitely sub in as most classes as needed but otherwise I rotate around Guardian/Eng/Ele/Mesmer/Rev as I see fit though I generally am more conservative when playing with unknowns.

But yes, it does suck to show off footage or a story and then someone goes that you could have done better with something else when we have no idea how your group works together. Sometimes they may just write you off as a class diehard that doesn’t know about other classes, but I don’t think that’s the case for myself. I noticed a lot of comments towards gw2 videos veer towards the salty end….

Though my comp is largely crap and I can’t really count so I have no idea what’s really a good skirmish at times. Frankly, I usually just watch Gw2 footage for the entertainment value and not 360 noscope MLG.

I will say that I have been testing Iron Blooded and Bulwark Gyro though after this thread. The gyro actually lasts a bit which surprised me, but I’m not complaining since the Reconstruction Field and the Gyro are some serious damage mitigation.
