Helloooo fellow engi’s,
Some of you might remember me from other engineer videos, but those were all condi/cele. I’ve decided to revisit my engineer and switch it up to a SD burst engineer and have been having tons of fun/kills with it

The build: http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQFAUlUUpmqlcxdLseRCdBN6pEmuAyFUBRtwPFAA-TJBFwACuAA12foaZAAPAAA

Because this build is so squishy and easy to pin down I take 2 defensive/sustain kits to heal/block/move around more. They can still pack quite a punch with Acid Bomb and Crowbar though!

Having permanent swiftness and 60-100% vigor uptime (depending on if you land EG #2) together with jump shot and acid bomb will give you some decent mobility and harder to pin down. So far I’ve not had issues with any particular class other than DPS gaurdian and ofcoarse necs.

The video:

I’m still new to this quirky engineer build, so I made this video just to demonstrate some awesome combo’s and cool bursts. As you can see in the video I still mess up sometimes and don’t hit the right buttons at moments >.>

Feel free to leave tips and enjoy

how beautifully does SD deal with cele builds. also nice video but i think that given alot of the fights you were in you should take bunker down over power wrench, yes i understand that the defensive/utility argument but you can drop so many of those mines in a fight its redic and the damage is impressive.

Bunker down…? I haven’t ever seen it been used in any of my matches. Are you sure? I just tested it and the extra damage it can do is pretty good but losing a 3 sec block on a 16 sec CD and everything else from toolkit seems like too much of a loss to me :/

Any other changes you would make though?

You’re crippling yourself by not taking Rifled Barrels. SD engi relies a lot on positioning, so being able to stand further out on the edge of a fight and get your fire/air procs off onto a target without risking yourself is very useful. Rifle autoattack with rifled barrels traited is one of the precious few autos in the game that is actually accurate to 1200 range— you can’t just sidestep it like most projectile autos— and it does good damage at the same time. Rifled Barrels also gives you higher average dps on Blunderbuss due to less strenuous range requirements for its max damage, and it turns your Jump Shot into a proper movement skill should you use it that way.

It also gives you a 600 range Overcharged Shot. Everyone expects an engi to move closer to them before overcharging, but with this trait, you don’t have to. It’s one of the few combinations on engineer I’d consider truly overpowered.

Also, I question the use of Elixir Gun. While it does have excellent downed cleave through acid bomb and a little bit extra sustain, I think there are several other skills you can take that outclass it for an SD build. My personal favorite is Elixir S, as it brings both stealth for an easy burst opener (or saving downed allies from stomps), as well as invulnerability to prevent a burst, wait out an immobilize, or safe-stomp an enemy. Some other useful options are Slick Shoes, which is very useful for dealing with Thieves and other Engineers, as well as good for escaping fights (and its low cooldown stunbreaker). But while a stunbreak is certainly useful, if you’re getting hit with multiple CCs you’re going to die soon anyway with how squishy you are, and invuln would likely be the better choice for escaping high pressure like that.

I’ve seen a lot of people take Utility Goggles as well for its instant cast, SD-procing toolbelt skill, as well as the stunbreak, and blind immunity, which, combined with the reveal on Analyze, makes it another excellent choice for fighting Thieves, though perhaps not as good as Slick Shoes.

I’ve heard that Runes of Vampirism 6th effect (mist form at 20% HP) allows the use of toolbelt skills, which sounds pretty strong when coupled with 3 SD-proccing toolbelt skills. Not sure if it’s a better choice than Pack, with all the fury and crit chance it provides, but it’s something to consider.

You’re also missing Accelerant-Packed Turrets, which is very useful in shutting down people who get into melee. You have 2 low cooldown turrets you can use for CC, and even get heals out of them at the same time through water field blasting. The knockback from exploding a turret makes for an excellent frame in which to overcharged shot your opponent, and you can use toolbelt skills from there for an easy finish. Taking 2 in explosives also gives you bomb on dodge, which deals far more damage than your autoattack, and is especially good for pressuring downed or ressing enemies.

Edit: I am blind, disregard that last paragraph.

I have a lot of experience with engineer in general and SD builds. I disagree with much of what you have said Sins. Let’s start with a couple facts:

  • Unless you run celestial, builds that try to do everything are worse than builds that specialize.
  • Static discharge is a specialized build for combos and fast, unexpected burst.

Rifled barrels, when it loses the element of surprise (long overcharged shot), is a bad trait. How long do you estimate the fight is going to take place in that small 200 range window after the first few seconds? The answer is not long, and if you think you can auto someone down off a point you’re wrong. I can imagine you backpedaling or running away to make use of this trait as your opponent closes the gap or just LoS’s. Fighting at max range puts skills like surprise shot, throw wrench, and rifle turret out of range. It is a good idea to learn how to position yourself and kite without the 200 range safety blanket.

As I mentioned before, any experienced player would recognize you have the longer range overcharged shot after the first one (or then you’re not making use of the trait), and account for it. Elixir gun is bad in static discharge.

I put accelerant packed turrets and bunker down in the same group of traits that seem good, but are bad when considered in the context of static discharge. Perhaps the biggest burst combo you can do in these builds involves pulling someone onto your placed turrets with magnet and detonating them in combination with other toolbelts and prybar. Accelerant pushes them out of a good few thousand damage (detonate and its static discharge only hits if opponent is directly on top), and could make you miss prybar if detonate is done out of order amongst the button spam. While nice, it is not needed to survive.

Bunker down I tested but it simply isn’t reliable. The longer the fight goes on, the more likely you are to lose as a glass engineer. Gathering your low radius mines in a specific area isn’t going to happen with a 10 second lifespan and 2 sec cd between spawns. Expecting good players to be pulled into your obvious clump is even less likely. It requires a big trait trade to obtain, and does so for inconsistent damage and lower burst.

The difference between being able to hit someone from on top of the crypt at mid on Foefire and from the ledge below it is huge. As an SD engineer, you rely far more than most other builds on positioning to survive, and unlike similar builds on other professions, you do not have a teleport skill to reposition yourself when focused. Being able to damage from a high ground position means the enemy team cannot switch the majority of their focus onto you, and they are forced to move far or use (often) important cooldowns to reach you. And while not as obvious, an SD engineer can wreak just as much havoc from the edge of a teamfight as a powermancer or power ranger, with the added bonus of dealing mostly piercing damage. Rifled Barrels also means you can engage sooner, and deal damage for longer; as well as escape easier, and even deal more damage to enemies who break LoS by higher Blunderbuss damage through walls.

All that in combination with a 600 range Overcharged Shot. It’s quite easily the second most important trait for SD engi.

Also, Accelerant-Packed turrets is amazing for being an offensive trait with highly defensive applications. Most builds in the current meta have to be in close range to deal their highest damage, and this trait gives you not 1 but 2 ways to punish anyone who tries to do so with CC — and good damage-- which can easily be combo’d into overcharged shot, or net shot, or supply crate.

While you’re spamming autos from the ledge, I’ll be using all of my abilities with a more rounded build. Don’t bring delusions of high ranked pvp with SD into this conversation. You also seem to have ignored my entire post and refuted not a single bit of it.

Okay, well while you spend time insulting me on the forums, I’ll be playing and winning high-tier ranked games against top players. Have fun with your delusions.

Haha, sorry that you took honest criticism and asking for a real rebuttal as insulting your fragile ego. If you want to bring ranking into it, I’ve been higher ranked with a much higher win % than you in both team and solo queue. Don’t let the door hit your tucked tail on the way out.

I’ve tried the range trait, and really do like it. It’s very useful on rifle but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. You do lose some CD reduction. Overall, I think i’m sticking to hair trigger because it has better synergy with rifle mod.

I have also been trying out other utilities, like elixir S and goggles but I like the sustain on EG too much to give it up >.>

yea you will be hard pressed to see a full 26006 full glass engineers with it, i feel like the only one at times, but in your video i noticed you were fighting on point alot which personally i try not to do i prefer to +1 fights and end them extremely fast but in your situation getting a few autos off which will proc some land mines on to the point then baiting enemy’s threw them or alternatively pulling enemys into them would work hugely in your favor, i also noticed that you were moving threw the fight a fair bit and when you consider that you will be doing damage and dodging (dont forget dodge bombs will proc it) then the chances of you laying down a heap of mines in a small area people are fighting in will add heaps of pressure to on point fights, lets not also forget that there are something that cant help but to run into land mines like phantasms and minions and just about every single shout bow warrior in the game seriously they love them.

honestly your builds solid for solo play and there isnt really anything that should be changed for any reason other then personal preference , but atm i really wish my internet wasnt so bad atm because im preping a video when it finally gets fixed of full glass SD engineer using bunker down and gadgeteer and ive got a clip of a mesmer eating some damage, healing, moving slightly to the left and eating 10k damage in landmines/dodge bombs and 1 tk auto in a very very short amount of time, at the end of the day my only recommendation is to learn how to use bunker down with SD engi and you wont regret it.
