I am concerned about how they wear armor. Heavy armors look pretty good on charr, but medium have always looked a little odd, with textures getting warped, or trenchcoats flaring out around the legs, for example. Could some of you charr engineers assuage my concerns by posting pics that don’t suffer from the mentioned problems, and show off charr engineers at their best looking?

Your fears are sort of justified due to the fact that some of the armor does indeed look weird on a Charr. That being said there are several armor pieces that look very good. The screenshot shown below is a good example of a good armor piece imo. It is however a level 60 set but in the end you still have to decide for yourself what you want to do. As far as story goes btw, Charr Engineer in Iron Legion is very cool. Anyway, the screenshot:

If anything my first character was a Charr Engineer for the Lore aspect, just love the idea of an extraordinarily intelligent (I’m an Engineering student, being an engineer DOES require a lot of brains) and refined savage, using a flamethrower to scour the earth clean of filth.

I wanted to do the same, but really, Charr themselves are quite ugly.

And the personal story of the charr only goes for the first 20 or so levels so… not like it has any impact beyond aesthetics at the end so…

If you like clipping issues, the way they have the tails and feet and hands, the HUGE necks which mean that very few headgear looks realistic on them and hunchbacks stretching armour… then I recommend you go charr indeed.

If you prefer armour looking normal, then go human.

My only human complaint is how silly he holds the pistol when jumping, and the orgasm shout during jump shot.

I run a charr engie as my main, and yeah some of the armor looks really dumb on them.

The biggest issues seem to come from the coat, helmet/mask, and shoulders.

A lot of the long coat ones just blouse out around their legs, hiding your pistols and clipping really badly with the tail. Some of the hats and masks also look a little funky, and the shoulderpads can look very floaty, like they’re not attached to your armor. That said there are a few bright spots, and if you have a some transmutation stones you can make a decent set up.

I’ve found that the Pirate, Duelist, Human cultural T1, all look decent on my charr, without the crazy low hanging bloused out tails of the other armors with long coats. For helm I’ve stuck with the one that looks like a strapped on monocle, leather workers can craft them easily. Haven’t found shoulders I like yet.

I wouldn’t exchange my furry monster for anything else. He looks awesome in his trenchcoat. Honestly all that metal plating is not doing them justice.
