full marauders scrapper, or you can do a mixture of berserk, soldier. With strength runes, brawler runes, or hoelbrak.
inventions: middle bottom middle
alchemy: middle top top
scrapper: middle top top
hammer: bloodlust, leeching sigils stats: marauders or zerk (whatever you feel like)
heal: healing turret
utilities: elixir-gun, bulwark, elixir b
elite: mortar kit is my preferred, but sneak gyro is best for beginners

I roam almost exclusively on my Scrapper, and I use a rifle build while soloing, and a hammer build primarily for defending camps and/or lords and providing melee/support in small groups. The reason I do this is because the rifle build has so much more burst and actual range pressure, that once you start roaming you realize that hammer just gets kited by any competent players. Hammer is great, but you reallly need a node to defend for it to work better than rifle.
I am not saying that you shouldn’t use hammer. It is great in small groups and, like I said earlier, extremely good with the more defensive aspects of node defense.
If you ever want to secure more kills while roaming, here is what I use:
The burst damage is extremely good, so is the CC and engage/disengage. I hit 3200 power at peak spike thanks to might from Mass Momentum (stability on 2x gyros and elixir tool belt). You also have excellent protection uptime.
With this build, I can also take camps just as fast as hammer by simply swapping Tool Kit for Bomb Kit, and Blast Gyro for Shredder Gyro. Clump the PvE mobs and kill them with 5 target cleave damage. When I see or expect to face a condition based foe I will swap Elixer B for Elixer C.
When I run Hammer, all I do is swap Tools for Inventions, equip my hammer, and then basically select the standard meta skills:
This build has amazing sustain, good damage, lots of reflects, and is a potent small group fighter. It excels at node fighting and when other allies can provide your range pressure.
The reason I run these two builds is that all it takes is swapping 1 weapon, 1 trait line, and a few traits to go from meta-hammer to potent solo build.

For small group i use: Power Scrapper
Can support others a bit with reflects, some dmg reduction from gyro and protection from rune proc, cleanse condis and some healing with Elixir Gun and Healing Turret, AoE stealth with Throw Elixir S and Stealth Gyro and ofc rez/stomp power with Function Gyro with stability.
If you are against heavy condi you can take Elixir C or Purge Gyro (my preference, because it has poison field for downed cleave too) instead of Elixir S, and if your group wants to burst kill someone (possibly a necro) take Elixir X for the moa.
For solo roaming i dont use this build because everyone can run away from it and doesnt have enough range pressure (wouldnt be a problem if you would have high melee burst or enough gap closers).
So for solo i use this: Cele Scrapper
(Note: i just started trying out Rocket Boots, on paper it looks good with the added mobility and burn but other skills also fit perfectly with this build, gonna list them later)
Its squishier than the power one because no Inventions traitline and Durability runes, but has way more pressure with Elixir Gun AA, burn proc from Incendiary Powder and Rocket Kick.
I use cele stats because engi can still benefit from it (good heals and perma regen, can stack might easily and has burns and bleeds with traits and skills that arent terrible).
For this build there are multiple changes you can do. Can change Rocket Boots to Purge Gyro (for more condi cleanse), other elixirs (Elixir B for more boons and stab, Elixir C for condi cleanse, Elixir S to run away or to invul a burst or safestomp, Tool Kit for 1 more block and pull and Pry Bar also synergises well with cele).
For traits you can change No Scope to Pinpoint Distribution (if you use Elixir B ), Final Salvo to Adaptive Armor (if you think you dont need the stab for the gyros for might or safestomp, again if you use Elixir B you have stab from it).
Just watch out that you dont have your heal recharged after passive Elixir S.

What I have always said and still havent found anything to convince me of anything contrary:
Personally I still find condi p/p vastly superior to power/cele hammer/rifle in small groups. The more damage the later go, the faster the p/p will demolish them in one on one combat. Rifle in particular is pretty weak. Hammer is ok-ish on a tanky sustain build supported by 2-3+ friendlies but against other dedicated roamers (ie thieves, mesmers, etc) it simply do not have the lingering bite to kill runners.
This is not my build, but I use something similar for solo roam or small group with really good results. The best build I’ve found atm.

Due huge boon duration U can get perma fury an almost perma QUICKNESS. So, the build have huge damage with a really solid defense.
