In the spirit of “famous quotes,” “only an engineer,” etc. etc…

It has recently come to my attention that engineers are in dire need of a new profession icon. The current icon (a small bomb) looks somewhat similar to the elementalist icon (a small flame).

This wouldn’t be an issue, except for the fact that engineers are extremely rare. In fact, often when I solo-queue a free tourney, my teammates look at the scoreboard and say “lol, we have three eles, we’re gonna win”—when in fact, we only have 2 eles and myself, an engineer. (All joking aside, this has actually happened to me, more than once.) Because of this problem, most players in the game don’t even know that engineers exist. When they do see an engineer, they figure it’s a new ele build.

We need a new icon. Post suggestions below. I’m thinking maybe some slick shoes…?

Cool idea OP, and you’ve hit it home because after a few months in dungeons I’ve personally had to deal with teammates saying, “oh thought you were an ele.”

I didn’t think races actually had their own racial icons. Were you specifically referring to the Iron Legion?

If we can’t have the same for Engineers, then that would be a little disappointing since every engineer’s character creation screen has gears grinding away.

For example, during Wintersday each race had it’s own snowflake decoration in Lion’s Arch, and the Charr snowflake was based on a gear.

Okay, two things—

1. I could have sworn our icon was a bomb, but now that people mention it, it does look like a jug of some sort. An even better reason to change it.
2. I’m kind of surprised that other people have actually experienced the same problem (people think you’re an ele because they’ve never seen an engi before)
3. All these icon ideas are awesome.

Well, that turned out to be three things. Guess I’m an engi who can’t count.

I have been definitely mistaken for an Ele before. Now it makes more sense why. Literally been called a noob op fotm ele. Made no sense at all until now. Still doesn’t make full sense, but given most people can’t differentiate between a bleed Thief and a heartseeker spam Thief according to some of my buddies it’s at least a little closer in logic.

If the devs are busy, I can whip ’em up an EPS in illustrator right chicken louis.

Wow, I had no idea that the problem of being mistaken for an ele was actually so widespread. This could actually turn into a serious suggestion thread.

A single wrench still seems like the best option, although I think a gear would be fine as well. The icon only really matters in dungeons/PvP, and no one in those modes would confuse it for a black citadel icon.

Perhaps this symbol might be easier to contrast for all the players who’ve never seen an engineer before.

I think it’s meant to be both a bottle and a bomb to signify elixirs and explosives.

I doubt it is elixir related, but that it has a cork in the top so the black power stays in the container.

i agree as well. even as an engineer i always automatically assume that its an ele in the party window. guess im self-discriminatory

kinda looks like a grenade there. And it is kinda hard to tell with a quick glance in game to the ele one. I support the the wrench idea.

I always confuse it with elementalists. Always.

I think it should be a wrench as well, so many times i’ll go into tPvP with my friends (who happen to be engies xD) and i’ll be all excited to see we have 3 “engies” only to find out that the last one is an ele….

I’m the odd one out who sees the engi/ele symbol and immediately thinks “Oh look we have an engi!”

PS: Maybe they can just make our bomb/elixir/bottle larger or more defined so we can distinguish ourselves better…

Too many times have I pressed B in a PVP match and said to myself ‘Oh wow, thats a lot of Engineers!’

Result: 3 Eles, and I’m the only Engineer…

Edit: I really love our current icon, by the way.. And would prefer it if the Ele had their icon changed. Why a flame? Make it a snowflake, a bolt, a… rock?

I still, to this day, get confused with Elementalists and Engineers!

While I don’t dislike the current icon, I would definitely be in favor of some kind of wrench/gear icon.
