Okay! So my engineer was the first class I rolled, and I knew absolutely nothing about the game while I was getting him to 80. Once he was 80, I tagged along with some friends in a bunch of CoF runs, and bought a whole bunch of exotic power, precision, condition gear from the token trader.

Now that I’ve learned the game, and rolled 3 extra 80’s with proper gear and stats, I keep looking back at my old starter, with his confused gear, and want to revamp him, but I wanna know if I can get any use out of his current gear before I throw it away on a zerker, or knight’s set.

Buy rabid.

Now that’s over and done with, with your CURRENT gear (pre-rabid) you should probably try a HGH Flamethrower build since you’re on Power and Prec. A bomb build wouild be fun too.

Why would anyone use a flame thrower for condition damage? After hitting them 10 times, you do 1 tick of burning on the last hit…

The elixir gun, on the other hand, can cripple/bleed a lot of classes to death, while giving you quite a bit of the lasting power needed to win an attrition fight.

For just straight up condition damage, grenades, and pistols are nice.

I’d do pistols/elixirgun, since they share a lot of traits.

The only way to play the engineer is to exploit it.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.

You combine it with on crit traits that apply conditions.

I might give pistol’s and grenades a try!

I don’t mind completely regearing this guy, I just wanted to know if the armor was a complete loss or not.

I find the engi to be a poor condition user. Mainly because your unable to quickly stack bleeds and only burn and alot of bleeds do any real damage (Guess torment can kinda count now too but meh).

Iv long theorized that going hybrid with power and con would give you the most damage. Going only off the stats the flamethrower is mainly a power weapon thanks to skill2, but if you take traits to apply bleeds on crits and regularly switch to pistol for poison, you can have both con stacking and burst damage.
Tho thats just a theory, iv yet to actually try it out.

If you start stacking the kitten out of burn duration boosters, it can get pretty crazy.
Even if Sigil of Smoldering isn’t working (according to the wiki, it isn’t), with a burn-focused runeset, Napalm Specialist, and the right food, you can get a total of +103% Burn Duration, which can let the Flamethrower’s autoattack alone have a 100% burn uptime. Incendiary Powder would stack three 6-second burns (for a total of 18), and Air Blast would add 4 seconds. Total off of Autoattack + Incendiary Ammo + Air Blast with that 103% boost is 24 seconds.

Traiting into Incendiary Powder, of course, gives you an 8-second burn that’ll probably proc within a second or two of finishing its 10-second cooldown, bringing it up to 32. Incorporate other skilltypes into it, and the burning can go on until Ragnarok.

Of course, in PvP, the burning will probably be cleansed or converted, but Burning converts to Aegis, which blocks one attack, and Flamethrower A ) attacks ten times in two seconds and B ) will reapply its 2-second Burning as soon as it hits the tenth time.

Sample build (thrown together a minute ago):

Turned out I’d missed that there was a Condition Duration food that would add 40% duration, for a total, if everything’s working properly, of 148% Burning Duration (and +60% Condition Duration in general, due to Explosives and the food). Haven’t applied Might, but it’ll have from 6 to 16 stacks, depending on what how many things are used to stack it.

Mix in a bit of rampager gear for a bit of power, which is nice with Elixir gun and grenades, and a higher crit chance.

The original armor is rampager? I think that’s actually one of the better stats for an engineer, an alternative to berserker. I would keep it. Engineers still rely heavily on normal attacks but have a strong condition component and many traits proc on crit. Rampager has all the ingredients.

Engineers don’t stack bleeds to 25 by themselves but they steadily deal out a wide assortment of conditions.

Rampager pairs well with a Static Discharge build. Power is coupled with Condition Duration on the trait line, so even if you don’t have a lot of Condi Damage, you can (with Pizza) build up some pretty impressive Condi Duration stats.

This is something of a hybrid build – but there’s nothing wrong with that.

I was actually running a static discharge build not too long ago, but it required zerker gear. What kind of traits would you recommend personally?

I suppose if you weren’t satisfied with the damage output of static discharge on the rampager gear then you probably want the zerker gear at this point.

20 30 0 0 20 is how I trait. Selecting in order: Incendiary Powder, Enhanced Permformance, Hair Trigger, Rifled Barrels, Modified Ammunition, Static Discharge, Speedy Kits. I use P/P (‘zerker with sigils of battle and corruption) EG, Rifle Turret (for Surprise Shot) and Took Kit. This mainly for WvW, but PvE is easy — been awhile since I’ve run a dungeon however….

My stats (when charged) are around 3,100 Attack, 1,420 Condi Damage, 33% Critical Chance and 50% Critical Damage – w/ Pizza I get 60% Condi Duration.

This is a hybrid, and may not be for everyone, but I really enjoy it. I’ve got close to 1,500 hours on my Engi and this is what I’m most interesting in right now. It works for me.
